I've been a little cavalier recently in comments posted about going out in Las Vegas and it was time to put my credibility to the test. I had family obligations in Mesquite, NV and being that close I booked a couple of nights in Las Vegas. I managed to get to my hotel late in the afternoon and checked in with a need for a shower, it was much warmer than I expected for late September, in the mid 90's. The little voice in my head cautioned me against dressing and going out, and I listened for a while, going to the pool for a few laps and a soak in the hot tub, but I had made the reservation specifically with getting in some public Sarah time and returned to my room where I showered and dressed very casual in jeans, a pullover top and sandals. I found several reasons to not step out the door, but finally left the room, made it to my car and headed out for a little bit of gambling. I hit the Rio where the hipsters ignored me and then went to Palace Station where the locals ignored me, success for me. It had been a long day and after a snack I went to bed.
In the morning that little voice was still there. “It's going to be hot.” “Daytime crossdressing is foolish because the light is so revealing.” “Stay in the casinos if you must go out.” and so on. But my nails were already done and I'd made a date to take a GG friend to coffee that afternoon. I dressed in white pants, loose top and the same comfortable sandals and first visited the casino gift shop where they had coffee and donuts. I sat by the pool and enjoyed my breakfast before heading out to do a little thrift store shopping. I've been to Las Vegas many times and have a few favorite stores. It was a success at the Savers on Sahara and Decatur where I found and tried on several things, most of which I bought. I also went to the grocery store to get some room snacks, hair spray, razors and nail polish remover I forgot and left at home. It was hot and after cooling down in the room I changed from pants and my hip pads to a slip and skirt with a little natural flair at the hip. I needed to get a little air circulation if I was going to be comfortable for the rest of the day.
Mid afternoon, I went to pick up my friend at her work and we went to the Fashion Show Mall where we found coffee, ice tea (I was still cooling down) and eventually a place to sit and chat for nearly an hour. People came and went from our little area and while I may have been clocked any number of times, it really didn't matter. They were all strangers and it was more important that I pay attention to my friend. She did have to return to work and after a pic and a goodbye I left to do some research and gamble a little more. (For those who plan to go to DLV next spring, the Art Tour will visit the Belagio for an exhibit of Fabergé related artwork.) I used the ladies room near the convention floor after the meetings had been suspended for the day, gambled a while, they do great cocktails in real glass for those at the machines and I won $30 on one 30 cent bet. After that I went to New York New York for a fish and chip dinner where I may have been mis-gendered by someone who heard my voice before they looked at me. I didn't really care at that point. Finally I returned to my hotel where I won another $40 on a Willie Wonka machine, the Gene Wilder version of Willie.
I went in casinos, thrift stores, a major mall and sat by the pool and never had a single problem. So I don't take back anything I've posted, even in the heat Las Vegas can be a comfortable place for crossdressers, even those of us who don't even have the word “Pass” in our vocabulary. It has more to do with your attitude than public perceptions.
