So the decision was made that I needed a man cave. The ironic thing is Brittany's new closet system at the far end. I now have all my stuff in one location and completely organized. This is a project a year in the making and I have to thank my ever supportive wife for driving me to do it. Building the closet was pretty easy (other than the cost) completely refinishing the basement was the real chore. Lots of hours and sore muscles, but so worth it.

That is fantastic. Had I the idea and energy I would be thrilled. But, I went another course and just gave all my male stuff to the Salvation Army. My closet is still a mess, so my ex-wife helped and moved out, another closet to fill.

That's good work. My wife and I share a walk in closet but I'm at the point where I have to store my off season clothes in another room.

Just watch out for humidity in that basement. You might want to look into some low wattage electric heaters designed to combat humidity. "Golden Rod" is one example.

I'd be proud too!

I'm working on a Narnia closet, collecting old fur coats and wraps. There'll be a secret panel behind them which opens into a passage and a hidden staircase which comes out behind a swinging bookcase in my living room. The passage is built, but it's a lot of work to complete the project, and never enough funds of course.

Dang, your closet is easily twice the size of the one I just built!!! ;)

Great result, I'm sure it was a labor of love and you must have been thrilled to finally be able to organize your stuff. I know I was.

Very enviable - for both your effort and what you now have to treasure and fill... and...

Boots on hangers! What a great concept - and obvious what boot hangers are for... yeah, I know...

Nice boots too.... :D

Love the closet, it looks great and plenty of space, the only thing I can't figure out, is where do the maxi dresses and long skirts hang?
Wish I had room for something like that, I've filled one spare closet and could use another.

Fantastic. Very inspiring. We're in the process of moving, and one of the criteria for the new house (build or buy, whatever works best at the time) will be his and her walk in closets -- or the ability to add a second closet area, perhaps just like this. Thanks for posting, Brittany.

I think your idea of a 'mancave' is somewhat different to that of the average man! I don't see a single hammer or electric drill anywhere.:battingeyelashes:

I don't want to downplay this wonderful achievement. I think it's great! But my wife and I have separate bedrooms. I'm a restless sleeper and she need her rest. Thus separate beds. So we have separate bedrooms as our kids are off on their own. My bedroom has some very frilly feminine curtains decorated by my wife, a dresser and my own large closet which needs some thinning. I suppose some things can be brought to Goodwill or the salvation Army. I have my own girl's bedroom!

Nice job. i'm looking forward to doing things like that when I move. Right now, I'm just basically flipping my own house. I like the way you have things organized. Pretty sweet. I'm kind of spoiled thought, I live alone and have a large walk-in closet.

This post should be an inspiration for young or not young CDs who are kind of hiding clothes or putting them in "another" drawer. Nice combo of a man cave and a beautiful collection :)

Funny how that works. I'm a mechanical engineer and I used to do a lot of machine design, but not so much any more. However, I designed my closet in SolidWorks before I made my first saw cuts. With about $1000 in the closet shelving system, I did not want to take any chances...

I took a trip to Ikea a few weeks ago to check out some closet systems.
I'm not quite sure of the size and wether or not it will fit yet, but wouldn't it
be nice!
Thanks for some inspiration!

This is straight up awesome!

As a lover of all things aesthetic and all things acceptance, this is pure brilliance
and an utterly wonderful representation of you and your confidence and your truly beautiful relationship.

Congratulations on being outstandingly cool! :GD:

flatlander_48, I know just what you're saying. I was about to fire up Solidworks then I found Ikea has a closet builder. Had every drawer and shelf laid out before a single order was placed.

Kristyn, that's exactly the system I went with. I definitely recommend it.

Thank you all for the compiments. It's been great having a single place foe everything.

I have a John Lewis Home system that I bought online. I don't believe we have an Ikea within 150-200 miles. Anyway, HomeDepot sells them and they're all wood, but they don't sell all of the specialized pieces. I wound up buying them from a store in Michigan. The JLH folks supply a gridded clear plastic film to be used as a planning tool, but that's it. I have a U-shaped arrangement with high and low shelves/rails on 2 of the 3 sides. Out of the 5 shelf and rail sections, 4 had to be cut to length. Definitely didn't want problems with that! Once I drew up all of the pieces in SolidWorks, I assembled them in a few ways until I found an arrangement I liked. I even got their iPad viewer running and used that as something I could carry into the closet for visualizing in place.

There is that old adage about:
Measure Twice, Cut Once.

In these modern times, I would amend that to:
Design Once, Measure Twice, Cut Once.

However, I did make one interesting discovery. I needed to make a number of fine, smooth and splinter-free cuts to get the lengths I needed. I found a tool called a Japanese Pull Saw with a high tooth count. As it works on the pull stroke, there's no chance of any wobbling or off-axis cutting. Makes nice, very smooth, accurate cuts.

And indeed, it is indeed a wonderful feeling to be be able to dress and have a space to hang up your clothes.
