I didn't do much, just drove about 20 min to the gas station. The pumps (the gas, not my shoes) were slow so I didn't fill up. I wore skinny jeans, black flats, a white cable knit sweater with puffy sleeves, and a deep red chunky scarf. I got a lot of looks while driving. Cars pass and I see the passenger turn around and look. I have a long way to go. Not sure I'll try again any time soon if I couldn't even do this without feeling bad.

You don't say if you were wearing a wig, boobs and hip padding. Were you trying to pass as a female or just trying to get away with wearing the clothes?

Pumping gas is one of the first things some of us try as we work up the nerve to go out in public. Work on your presentation and they try again.

If you liked what you were wearing who cares what others think (sounds lie a nice conservative outfit)

Gwen!

You should not feel bad at all!!!!

Do you know how much courage you showed by going out! There are so many(myself included) that have not gone out at all yet.

Good for you you broke a huge barrier and you should keep it up! Who cares about other people!

I think you deserve a congratulations honey!

That was pretty much I did those first times out. It felt like everyone was looking at me and the gas pumps seemed to be going soooo slow. Back then we didn't have pay at the pump so I always had to interact with the attendant, who never gave me a second look. I would say that the pumps we're going the same speed as always but your heart was pumping at twice its normal rate and all those people looking at you were really just looking around.

Keep going out and enjoying life, it's the only one you get.

Hi Gwendolyn: the first steps are always the hardest. This just takes practice, working on makeup and the look you want. There will always be those that look, just try not to let it bother you. As long as they leave you alone and don't harass you. This gets easier as you get more experience. Kudos to you!

Hi Gwendolyn, congratulations. This is a good first step. My first trips out were just like this. I do not know if you went out at day or night. For day time try some big sunglasses. For night or anytime, big hair, and avoid making eye contact with the next lane.

A small point to make about driving. Next time you are out driving, either fem or drab, try to see what other drivers look like or are doing and you will see that it's very hard to see anything in most cases.

No wig as I have long hair already. I don't need hip padding. :-) I did have boobs which felt odd yet wonderful while driving. I did pay at the pump and left my coat on. I think the red scarf was like a flag though. As were my shoes. On the way home I went without the coat to let my puffy sleeves breathe a little. :-)

Wonderful Gwen, you go girl. No need to feel bad, you didn't do anything. Just smile
and be yourself.

Petrol stations may be the choice of many as a first-time outside experience but those wanting to retain their anonymity should remember that althoiugh in many places there is pay-at-the-pump there is always CCTV and usually this includes numberplate capture. The pump also has your card number. Just to cheer you up....it's not unsual for some malfunction to result in having to go to the cash desk to pay!

This is the same thing that I was thinking after reading your post. Yes, people sometimes look and register what they see in the car next to them. However, I would guess that the vast majority of the time they just do not have enough time to really get in a good look at the driver or passenger of the that nearby car. If stuck in a traffic jam, that is another and different situation. I don't know how many times I have seen some beautiful hair on the driver in front of me and never really got a chance to see if the face was a, go out driving, more often and you will quickly forget about your mental preoccupation with being clocked and just enjoy the moment being free, dressed the way you want and clearly out of your closet at home. Thanks for sharing.
