I had an interesting morning today.

As some of you may be aware, I do not have a car or motor vehicle of any kind at the moment. I commute back and forth to work on a bicycle.

Well, this morning it happened. I got clipped by the rear view mirror of a pick up truck that refused to slow down. This tough ol' Lady tore that rear view mirror right off that truck with a kidney and no internal injuries. Now my encounter with the gravel emergency lane didn't go so well. I have a few bruises and a sore right shoulder.

Now most days, I have my bra on; like I did this morning. I went to the ER to get checked out and my shoulder is just having some ligament issues from the fall. I had no fears from the emergency personnel. As a matter of fact I actually thought some of them were rather attractive.

How ever, after I finished up in the ER. I was greeted by three of this towns finest men in blue and escorted out of the ER with my left hand cuffed to one of my belt loops. When I asked what was going on, they told me it was a Federal Warrant. On the ride to the police station, they said it was for forgery in some place I had never been and I politely stated to the officer driving me in to the station that it had to be some kind of mix up. He said he hoped so because of the day I was already having. The conversation was amazingly cordial.

Suddenly, my mouth went dry because I got worried about being publicly outed before I'm able to take my first heeled steps the way I hope to. This is what terrified me more than anything else. Here I was about to go to jail and I knew I wouldn't stand a chance. Against a pick up truck, I can hold my own. Not where I thought I was going.

Moments after I sat down at the station, about to be booked. The attractive officer, yes I actually thought he was cute, asked me what my last name was; so I told him without hesitation. Almost right away, he told me I was right and he gave me his sincerest apologies as he removed the cuffs.

Apparently, the guy that clipped me and I share the same real first and middle name.

I did get some satisfaction of justice. As the Officer was giving me a ride home, he called the guy that hit me and gave him a story about needing to sign some liability papers at the station so I couldn't bill his insurance with my bills. I could hear the guy agree to come into the station to get arrested.

So now I have two extra days off from work and wishing my shoulder felt better than it does, and I am not going to hear the end of this from my boss at work. He's always telling me to be careful when I ride. I can assure everyone that I am careful, it's the other people on the road that need to be a lot more careful.

Now I would like to reiterate to everyone I am fine, if a little banged up, and at home.

Does anyone else have any scary moments of fearing they were about to be outed and not be after all?

OMG, so very sorry for you. Hope you are feeling better. And on top of the accident, the cuffs. Wow
Get better girl.
Gentle hug.

Your not fine. You were just hit by a something much larger than you and there may be injuries that you don't even recognise right now.

Get yourself checked very carefully. Don't waive any rights that you might have to proper compensation for all that you have suffered. If I were you I would get a really aggressive lawyer on my side.

I'm a cyclist too as well as a car and truck driver. Most people on the highway are very good but it only takes one driver who is not paying proper attention. I have always promised myself that if hit I will go to the most aggressive lawyer in town to make sure that i am protected. Significant injuries may take weeks or months to manifest themselves. I hope the drivers insurance will cover all of your bills.

I'm glad that you were not the person named in the warrant. What a bummer!

Consuelo, trust me. I did get thouroughly checked out at the ER, and I have not waived anything. Not to mention my sister has access to a great lawyer that she has used in the past. So he's familiar with my family. The officer was making up a story to get the guy to come into the station. There really is no such form that does what he said.

And to everyone, I am feeling better now that I've been home for a few hours and everyone was amazed at how high my spirits were through the entire ordeal.

What took me by surprise was one; the worry about being outed in jail; and two; actually finding some of the men that were making sure I was alright attractive. But finding them attractive is something I find in heindsight, and not while everything was happening.

Edit: On a side note. An arm sling is a really convienent place to carry your cell phone and your tablet,if the tablet isn't to large.

Glad all worked out for you; maybe wearing a bra could
have saving your shoulder from worse injury?

And I thought that I was having a bad day.
We got 20" Snow yesterday, and when I went out to plow it away,
My garage door cable broke, trapping my truck inside.

I will admit, it wasn't a good day. But, for the most part it really didn't seem that bad at all. Aside from those moments of panic.

I learned that I can find men attractive for one thing. I never thought that I might. I guess that this issue for me needed some kind of catalist or something. Those firemen were hot, and they weren't the typical young twenty something's. All of them had to at least be in their late twenties/early thirties.

Now the police officers were noticable younger and really cute.

I hope you got the officers names - the cute ones only, don't want to overload your little black book :)

crazy girl, if everyone has 5.5 liters of blood, please stop trying to spill it, as it's slippery for cyclists.

Off to get a sling for my Ipad now

Silver lining alert! So glad to see you are keeping your wits about you! This bodes well for your recovery.

I was in a pretty bad cycling accident last April. I can tell you that your body will hurt more 24 hours after the fact, and worse yet 48 hours after. Once you are past 72 hours, things do finally settle down. But plan on rest, lots of water, anti inflammatory pain killers (if you can take it) and a comfy place to be for the next few days. If you hit the pavement hard at all (like I did), you're really not ready yet to declare all is well.

How did the bike fare? Did it take any damage? Did you helmet hit the ground (I assume you wore a helmet)? If so, buy a new one -- they only protect you once and then they need to be replaced.

Take care of yourself and you'll be back on the bike in no time.

Cops, Hmmm Not so much.... But you had to mention Firemen.

I would like to thank everyone for their well wishes.

Karen, I didn't completely hit the pavement. I was mostly cushoned by the loose gravel of the emergency lane. As I went down I somehow managed to roll away from traffic, pulling my bike with me. My helmet deffinately needs replacing, and it will be.

Right now I'm watching Robot Chicken on the DVR. The laughter helps a lot, even when it stings a little.

I am happy to hear that you are not injured to badly. Also, so happy they got the arrest situation worked out quickly. I once spent an hour kneeling beside an interstate highway because they misread my tag number and the color of the vehicle they were looking for.

Elizabeth, I'm so sorry about your accident, and I'm glad you are OK. I also like a man in uniform, and I'm dating a cop. There are way worse options out there. :daydreaming:

Apparently, the guy that clipped me and I share the same real first and middle name.

You know what, hon? That's just not your real name. It may be your legal name. It may be the name you were assigned at birth. But it's not who you are, really, is it? Your real name is the one you pick for your true self. :hugs:

Paula, that's probably what I meant to say that we had the same legal first and middle name. But I was trying to get it out before the NORCO kicked in and made me a little loopy.

I would like to take a moment and give everyone an update about my condition.

I actually feel much better than I did when I went to bed around 2 am this morning. I wasn't feeling well enough to get comfortable to get to sleep. That's why I went to bed around 2. I only have one thing new to my discomfort and that is a stiff neck, most likely from not being able to get very comfortable while I was sleeping this morning. Also I have some stiffness that has radiated out from the bruising I received yesterday. It's the kind of stiffness that has you trying to stretch to relieve that stiffness and actually feels good to stretch. Almost like I had one heck of a work out at the gym. It's not all over, but it's there.

Keeping my arm immobilized in this sling is driving me absolutely nuts. But I don't really care a lot, probably from the NORCO the Doctor prescribed.

The Police were supposed to drop my bike off here yesterday, but I figured they got busy and my Nephew is going to be getting up shortly to take me down there so we can get it.

I hope everyone has a great day today, and my day should be a lot better than yesterday. TTFN

@Elizabeth - I figured you meant it the way you said it just now, just wanted to tell you that we love you for who you really are, in kind of a teasing way.

Get to feeling better, hon. :)

I am taking it easy.

By the way, we didn't have to go down there after all. They were just a bit busy yesterday and my bike was dropped off this morning just before I was about to wake up my Nephew to take me down there.

My bike fared better than I did. All I have to fix on it is replace the seat post. It won't take more than 5-10 minutes. I would upload the pic of my poor bike, but for some reason when I try it fails every time. I've been having trouble uploading to the forums for quite a while now.

I am so happy everything turned out ok for you. How is your bike.

Emma Beth

Laurie Ann, my bike is fine now. I've already replaced the seat post.

Another plus to this is I've had plenty of cuddle time with Freddie, my fur buddy. Freddie is our dog, he's part German Shepherd part Bassette Hound. Imagine a German Shepherd with the shorter legs of the Bassette Hound. He's not as low to the ground as most Bassett's Hounds, but he is lower than most German Shepherds.

He could tell that momma wasn't feeling to good and has been helping to nurse me back to health. He's such a sweet boy.

All of you cyclists please stay safe. There are too many drivers who get irate about sharing the road. My son-in-law's father was struck while cycling, ended up severely disabled, and, finally succumbed to his injuries. Elizabeth, make sure you are checked out and check out your state law on the statute of limitations for filing suit against the guy's insurance company. Don't ever tell any physician you feel fine! Sometimes the effects of an injury will not become evident for years. Some of my aches and pains have been evident since 1970, while others have surfaced only recently..all from the same incident.

Stephanie, I will be tomorrow when I'm scheduled off form work. I have stated before that I have been thoroughly checked out at the ER.

I'm a little nervous about today. I'm attempting to go back to work as per the Doctors release form. I wasn't able to secure a ride to work like I had planned to. So as they say, I'm getting back on that horse this morning. If I had been scheduled to work a later shift, I wouldn't be as nervous as I am right now because I wouldn't have to deal with the High School traffic. I will just not understand why so many people don't have their kids ride the school bus. That would relieve a lot of that traffic congestion and my ride earlier in the day would be a lot safer.

My helmet deffinately needs replacing, and it will be.

EJ:

Yes, make sure that you do that. Lots of discussion on a cycling forum that I frequent about buying into the advertising rhetoric, but to me it is cheap insurance. You never know all the ways in which your helmet was stressed. I am not risk-adverse as I spent 6 years of largely urban riding in Taiwanese cities of 1.0 to 1.5 million people. But, to me there's Risk, Calculated Risk and Stupid Risk and I try hard to avoid the last.

All the best for your recovery!
