Before I even start this topic no it isn't yet another lesson in how to walk in heels. Ok with that out of the way here is the topic of conversation, in your experiences how many of you were able to walk naturally your first time in heels? In addition what was that first pair(kitten heel, court shoe, etc)? For me it was my first pair, a cute pair of white low heeled pumps, they had a 2" heel and just felt natural the first time I wore them. I was quickly addicted and bought three pairs of pumps the next day including a pair of 4" black patent stilettos which to this day are still my favorite pair.

My first pair was a four inch pump stilleto that I loved I had no issue walking in them right from the start. Today I have some heels that are 6 inches and love them

I must admit I'm not very good at some things in life but I always believe that in everybody they have a least one natural talent and it just clicks! well mine was heels!! I can walk in them all day long no problems and would if I could! My first pair were 4" courts, I have many others now mind you.

I did well. Probably 2" heels, IIRC.

When I bought my first pair of shoes for dressing, I could not wait to get home and try them on. But we had more shopping to do first lol. Finally my wife and I were in the car and headed home. All I could think about while driving, was that nice new white shoe box on the back seat. Well finally at home, I slipped off my shoes and socks and carefully put the new shiney patent leather 4 inch heels on. Stood up and walked from the bedroom to the kitchen to put the kettle on. At that point I realised that the shoes were meant for me! No trips slips or falls and they were so comfortable I did not want to take them off. Sadly I had no choice as my son was due home soon. I had those shoes for maybe 20 years before finally letting them go due to arthritic knees deciding I needed to stay with flats for the foreseeable future. Trouble is primark now stock size 9 extra wide shoes and a few weeks ago I bought 3 more pairs of heels in anticipation of knee surgery I hope to get soon which will allow me to wear them again.

The most I can wear are 4" heels because I'm already 6 ft tall. What suits me best are 2" heels

I've never bought high heeled shoes in first time retail...always gently used. In young days I would just buy them if they seemed to fit. I lost a couple of big toenails that way. Now I wear them for a while in the store before putting my toes and cash on the line. I would never buy footwear online for this reason.
I've had GG's tell me to keep my toes forward while walking, others have said toes more apart....
I think you have to look relaxed, which takes practice.

BTW...!!! Make sure you have flats for driving the car. Both for the pedals, but also if you have to get out of the car for a flat or to assist another driver.

Iworked my way up from two inch strappy sandals.
These I had no trouble wearing.
I eventually graduated to four inch stilettos with little trouble.
Anything taller has always been a challenge.
I think anything greater than four inches difference between toe and heel is a challenge unless you wear size twelves or larger.

Ok I admit it I'm too old to remember back that far lol, but if I do recall I think it was pretty natural for me.
I think it was a basic pump but don't remember for sure. Yes love heels but do like the smaller ones now and the wedges are wonderful

I have walked with six inch heels. I must say that when out, walking across a parking lot for a fairly long walk was pretty amazing. MY SO told me to take short steps and that helped me keep good balance. Also how to step up or off of curbs. LOL had to do that right in front of a cop. I seemed to have passed that. Although, shorter heels like four inches is easier on your foot. I still like my six inch heels. I'm six feet and look pretty tall in them.

My first pair of white late 80's style granny boots with a 41/2 " heel , I was no expert on them like all the girls in the rock clubs back than but I did on and quickly improved.

1st time walking in heels, yeah, a little awkward. Women/girls the 1st time they walked in them were probably a bit awkward as well. I sometimes see women who rarely wear them but for a special occasion and they do not always look comfortable or natural with it. Some women just do not like to wear them. I do not have any big heels. Mostly I have walked in 3 and 4 inch and now I feel relatively comfortable doing so. Granted, I am not a public dresser, so all of the different terrain issues would likely come up for me. I have worn them all day in the house though, and yeah, after a few hours I can see why women take them off when they get the chance.

My first pair were black patent court shoe with a 3 1/2" heel, proved very comfortable and easy to walk in ! All mine now are about 4" and the easiest to walk in are my knee high boots !

Ophelia, I learned very quickly to keep my toe nails very short and rub Vaseline on to keep the skin soft otherwise I can understand your toe nail problem !

I have a pair of 2" pumps that I like, at 6' 3" and 74 years old, I'm not going to try anything taller lest I fall and break something like MsVal did a couple of days ago!

Gosh! I dont remember what I tried on first time! It would have been a pair of my mothers shoes, probably heels, but I dont remember anymore. I would not have been more than 5 or so.
I do recall that she had a pair of stiletto heeled shoes and I remember a defining moment when I realized they fit me! I also clearly remember my disappointment later on when i realized they no longer fit!

As for having trouble walking in heels then no, I have never struggled with that. Always felt very comfortable, as long as the size was right.
I have had many a pair in 2 to 4 inch and have had a few pairs with a 5 inch heel (no platform). I am very comfortable in up to 4 inch and can wear them all day long. 5 inch is for sitting on a bar stool looking pretty .. like in my avatar :)

I bought my first pair of pumps about five years ago. I did have trouble walking in them. It was a combination of not being a terribly comfortable shoes and not knowing how to walk in heels. My fiancee helped me in walking properly, sway, etc, and buying better more comfortable shoes also helped greatly.

Believe it of not, I still have the first pair of black heels that I purchased many years ago at "Lee Brewster's Boutiqie" in NY city.

They are so comfortable ..... I had the heels re-tipped a couple of times (do people still do that?) and I hate to throw them away. :)

My first pair of real heels were 2 inch pumps. They were no real problem walking in, but they did present a little pain after walking in them for several hours. The real challenge began when I started wearing 3 inch heels. It took several attempts to be graceful walking in them. I have tried walking in 4 inch heels, but they tend to be uncomfortable within a short period of time'

Walking in heels just came naturally to me. I remember thinking that I was the only boy in the world sneaking around in my Mom's and Grand-Mother's heels. Crazy.

Anything under 4" I consider flats! However, I used to destroy the tips of my spikes in no time when I first started dressing. I bought a package of 50 spike tips to repair all my ruined ones.

Then, I guess I learned how to walk in them. Because I haven't ruined a tip in years!:heehee:

Take a look around the whole store. it needs to be one of the bigger town stores for a full range. i use the one at Lakeside, as the local one only stocks a few items. Also look on the tights section, they do a nice pair of fleece lined leggings that a fantastically comfortable.

I admit to both my wife and i spending loads of cash there and most of our shared clothes come from there too.

Oh, and another heads up for UK members, Poundland do a large amount of make up including a new range of stuff.

Lucky me, I was really into the guys block high heels in the 70's, my favorites were 3" high. So by the time I bought my first pair of pumps, walking was a breeze. Classic black with a 5" stiletto. They are worn out, but can't throw them out. Second pair was a pair of 9 west loafers with 41/2" stacked heel. Loved them use to wear them even in guy mode. Recently I have fallen in love with strappy heels. Hugs Algoma

My first experience with heels: The first few tentative steps were fine and stable, I got a bit cocky then suddenly found myself on my rear end.
My first heels: black platforms wit 6" heels; Not the best for learning to walk in heel, but
they looked reel good.

Hell-o Taralynne,
My first pair of heels? That was such a long time ago, and they can be found decomposing in some landfill.
I do remember they were no less than a 4" heel, and didn't fit very well. Walking in them, I wouldn't say it was
natural, but it was easy to learn.
A well fitting, comfortable, shoe makes a huge difference!
Much Love,

My first pair was kitten-heel sandals. I strapped them on, thinking I'd wobble and fall, and had no problems - worried for nothing! I kept getting taller heels, and they were natural to walk in, in almost no time. Standing still can be another problem, though. I need to remember where my center of gravity is when I reach for something while wearing 4" heels.

I have been wearing heels in one form or other since I was 17-ish. :heehee:
So no problems now with walking, driving, running or even running backwards. lol

Aside from my first pair being slippery, which I corrected rather quickly, I never had a problem walking in them.

I will give this tip though, when it comes to shoes with a smooth/slick bottom the best thing you can do for yourself is to scuff them up with a mild abrasive or sandpaper.
They may not look pretty, but doing so will save you when those shoes meet other slippery surfaces like wet concrete, tile, waxed wood floors, ect.
The heel height may be the least of your concerns when you find your shoes slipping out from under you when they lose grip.

6' heels ? Ya, no, not for me. Don't know how you can "stand" those for any length of time. :lol2:

There is a learning curve for sure. Even GG's have to learn to walk in heels. Once we master it, we are good to go and after awhile it seems natural.:battingeyelashes::)

With the possible exception of a pair of 6 inch heels that managed to catapult me into the closet doors upon trying to stand, I've done well in heels. Anything over 5 inches are only for the bedroom though!

Ironically, I think men have a little easier time with higher heels given that our feet are generally larger. I wear a size 7.5 in men's (relatively small), which equates to a 9 in women's. I can wear 3-4 inch heels without that much of a problem. On the other hand, my wife is a size 6.5 (women's), and a 4 inch heel is tough for her since her foot is so much smaller. It would probably feel similar to me trying to wear a 5-6 inch heel.

First bought pair (many years ago) , ill fitting size 12 with 4 inch heels . But , that is how you find out what your true size may be (size 13). Today 5 inch all day wear , is not as comfortable as 5 1/2 to 5 3/4 . Why , not sure , maybe it is just a better angle for my own feet .

My first pair of heels were 4" Sandles. I found it natural and quite easy to walk in them. I love all my heels, and I do not like anything less than 3 1/2". If it's less than 3", I call them a flat, too.

I LUV my heels too!!! but as I stand 6'2" flat footed..... I don't think anyone would be asking me to dance in my 4-5" stilettos'!?!?!?? LOL
but, I'm not worried about my dance card these days anyway. I wear them as often as I can!

never once had a problem

was probably 10 when discovered mothers 3 inch heels - wish I still had same size feet lol (9 now)

now my wife says how can you walk so easily in them? she has trouble wearing anything over 2"
love the higher heels with arch like you get in the smaller sizing hence wanting to have same size feet as younger 10yo but still get high as I can get

I must have 20 pair heels to wife 4 if lucky
I'm a lucky girl having me accept my heel desires

Algoma:

A fairly similar path. I had 2 pairs of 3" Kork-Ease back in the day, but that was like 30 years before I started dressing.

After a started, my first pair were actually flatforms (yes, it is spelled correctly), but the second pair a couple of weeks later were a pair of Dansko Randi slides. They were a bit over 3" with a 3/4" platform. Whenever I wore those, the first 10 minutes or so was a bit rough, but it smoothed out after that...

In my youth 2 and then 3" heels. Three inches were pretty common when I was going to college. My sisters taught me to dance while wearing them. We would put on ball gowns and heels and practice. We all became assistant instructors. I didn't get to go to dances in fem, but I had a few offers from some of the guys in the classes.

My first pair was 3" rather wide heels and they were easy to walk in, but I still walked like a guy.

My first pair as Tina (long story) was a 6" platform shoe, and that shoe forced me to figure out how to walk as a girl would. I thought I was walking well at the time, but that was a fantasy. It took a few years to always walk in a feminine manner, which I now do completely and very comfortably.

I started right at 4 inch heels, and I think I managed to get it down pretty quick. I don't exactly have the most feminine walk in them still, but I think I manage alright. 5 inches can give me fits sometimes. I have one pair of black stilettos that I have to work the stride out a bit before I am alright, but then I have a pair of red 5 inch stiletto heeled sandals that I have no issue in.

My first experiments were with my mom's heels, which were already too small for me even when I was a little kid. That experience falsely convinced me that all high heels were painful. I got my first pair that actually fit when I was 12. 2-3/4" heels, which is laughably short compared to what I regularly wear now, but they were comfortable and no real problem to walk in. I've slowly increased my regular daily heel height over the years and now wear 4-1/2" to 5" with little concern.

Most of my heels are pumps or boots. But after my first pedicure I realized I needed open toe pumps and sandals. The problem I have with these is my foot slips forward, pinching my toes or they hang over the end of the shoe. Not cool. Any suggestions on how to keep your foot from sliding down the bed of the shoe?

Thanks for your advice, Algoma

I have a pair of one band slides from Chocolate Blu. Unfortunately they have ridge across the insole that acts as a gripper. An eigth of an inch movement from that theoretical location causes severe pain. Dr. Scholl's and others make moleskin pads or foam pads with an adhesive on the back. I cut a piece large enough to cover the underside of the band and that takes up enough clearance to prevent my foot from going forward in the shoe. While that would work nicely for open toed pumps, strappy sandals are a different matter. You would have to cut stripes of the material to match the underside of each strap. Don't know how that might look...

Yes. wear them without hose. Also place a toe pad in the toe area to hold your foot in place. Todays open toe and sandals are designed by the manufacturers to be worn without hosiery. When hose is worn with many of these shoes, the foot slipping will occur. This was told to me by the Ninewest district manager.

I went straight to the paten leather black 4" pumps, they became natural pretty quickly, 4'5" always takes a bit more concentration.

I love trying to find little ways to change my gait to make it feel more natural. Keep my knees straighter , arch my back a little more as i walk, i find the hip sway comes by itself. I make the crease in my elbow face forward and let my lower arms do more of the swinging. Head high, and and i try and let it glide sideways a little as i walk. I spend way to much time on such things!

I don't recall much trouble walking, but I do remember standing could produce an ankle wobble. I did a Marilynn Monroe costume a couple of times, and will never forget one waiter said, " look how good he walks in heels" . At this point in life, I am mostly flats, wedges and chunky heels, but I have a formal event next weekend and will be wearing my glittery 3" sandals that I spent the whole day in yesterday. {no wobbles, no pain}
