View Full Version : Unexpected side effects of being cheap

I happen to be rather cheap... I thrill not to fancy cocktail dresses at Forever 21, but to $6 bargains at Goodwill or Salvation Army. :)
So anyway... went out Friday night for a Passover seder and dressed up a bit, including nail polish. Saturday, I had to take my daughter to skating. I really didn't want to waste my nail polish, so I just emailed her coach and said "Heads up...."
Ended up staying Dianne for the whole four days Friday - Monday. Had to come out to a few more people to do that, and it was fine. I'm sort of inadvertently slipping into 24x7 mode just because I was too cheap to waste nail polish!
I hope to have my name change done in two or three months and then I'll be out full time even at work. So yeah... it was going soooooo slowly for a year and now it seems to be rushing by at breakneck speed.

Dianne, nice story, but even Jack Benny would have said you were cheap!

I go for bubble gun which is close to a natural nail color with a semigloss top coat. That seems to to work well daily and hence no need for panic. Good story Dianne and progress definitely picking up steam.
Cheers... Jennifer

Dianne, great story! Yeah, it was too cheap to waste a nice coat of the nail polish! It had nothing to do with how free you felt living life authentically! :battingeyelashes:
Good for you, sweetie. Keep up the drive. I'm behind you just a little bit, but on my own path nonetheless!

I'm going to have to be the dissenting voice here. I don't think you are cheap for sticking with a nice nail polish and there is nothing wrong with spending your money in a goodwill shop and thereby supporting others who might be in need.

I've heard of a lot of motivations for coming out...frugality is a first!

@kimdl93... I suspect (as Karen62 did) that there were other motivations. The cheapness was just the final little push I needed. It's so liberating, especially as pretty much everyone has been so nice about the whole thing.

Way to go Dianne, I'm with you at Goodwill.
Just one question, what color nail polish? hehe

Charlene,
The nail polish was (naturally!) bought on sale at Walmart and was a truly garish hot pink. :)
Devorah, thanks.

Wow, that's like an old Johnny Carson skit 'How cheap was she?'
Forever 21 is really cheap teenagers crap that will fall apart in short order.:2c:
Still, I sense a motive. Congrats.

Sometimes we can gain our confidence from the strangest places.
The nail polish was the catalyst that gave you the little extra push you needed to move forward. :D

Sometimes you get to the point where any excuse will do. Maybe????

Way to go Dianne. I went to a goodwill in Austin and found two skirts and to tops to go with them. It was a large store and had a lot to pick from. Oh, I also got a sundress there. MY SO got a short mini and a sun dress. All in all a good day shopping.
