It's kinda funny how different things affect you. A long time ago, when the first book in which I received credit came out I was handed a copy. It didn't seem like a "big deal."
But about a year later I was in a library and came across the book and suddenly I felt like it was real. I wanted to run up to some total stranger and say, "Look! This is me!" (I didn't do it, by the way).
When I did my legal name change everything seemed kinda perfunctory. I never even saw the judge, my court order was merely handed to me by the court clerk. As we left the courtroom my spouse said, "Well, do you feel any different?"
"No," I said, "Not really."
This past week I had to sign a couple of documents. Once I'd signed them the person I was meeting with suddenly discovered that they needed to be notarized. So the notary was called, the signature pages were reprinted, my ID was presented, I resigned the papers and signed the notary book.
As I placed my inked thumb on the notary book page I had a sudden thought, "Life will never be the same again."
It was kinda real and surreal at the same moment.
