Hey all, new here, looks like a really great place to be.
Actually, just kind of started dressing not too long ago, so I'm fairly green when it comes to the finer details.
Recently, I had a couple of evenings all to myself,( which doesn't happen very often) so I decided to go all out as I'm an all or nothing type person. I tried on different outfits from lingerie to dresses to casual looks, and for the most part, was very satisfied with myself as Kelsey and it was a lot of fun as well.
Now, after those fun evenings, I found that my eyes were quite sore and actually a bit swollen and was wondering if this is a common thing that happens as a result of applying and removing eye makeup? And if so, will the peepers just have to toughen up as they adjust to a "different " situation that they're not used to?

Hey kelsey, welcome to the forums, Youve found the right place.

Im the same as you, all or nothing! I wear glasses normally and put contact lenses in when dressed so i can do eye liner and mascara etc, the contacts themselves can tire the eyes but im sure when your eyes well up that some of the make up can end up in there, especially when rinsing it off. I use a little bottle of eye hydration stuff opticians recommend when using contact lenses, im sure solutions like that are available from any optician or pharmacy/drug store, it's a fluid that rehydrates so your not left with sore dry eyes, might be worth a shot!

I use makeup remover sheets. I think they have a an oil or maybe alcohol that can irritate the eyes. If you use soap it can cause eyes to burn. Buy a good makeup remover especially the eye makeup remover kind and you will get used to it.

I don't think it's normal. I've never had problems like that and I wear eye makeup every day. Maybe you're applying or removing the makeup incorrectly, or maybe you're allergic to something in the makeup or remover.

I would try hypoallergenic makeup and remover to see if it helps.

If I apply eye makeup in the evening and then remove it before bedtime I always wake up in the morning with my eyes full of gunk.

It isn't normal and it sounds like you are having an allergic reaction to your eye makeup. You can try the hypoallergenic makeup like Almay and see if that makes any difference.

The allergy thing did come to mind, however, Clinique is one of the best on the market for sensitive skin.
I've never worn contacts, so essentially, I've spent my entire life not touching my eyes.
I kind of blame that so called easy to apply pencil eyeliner, but found that in order for the color to transfer, I had to push pretty hard and when doing my waterline, that much pressure may have simply just made that area a little more sensitive and react accordingly.
I may switch to a liquid as I have a pretty steady hand.
For removing, I use neutrogena hydrating eye makeup remover lotion.
In a sense, I tried to eliminate any allergic reactions by going with these products. Maybe it's technique or very well possibly a reaction to the products, as I'm sure I'll continue to practice and experiment with different products to see which ones work best for me.

If I am trying out some different styles or techniques and I remove it several times in an evening, using Clinique and cotton pads, then my eyelids will get sore and kind of feel as though they are scratched a bit. It is nothing severe, but it does hurt. This does not happen unless I take it off, reapply it, and take it off again in the same day. For me, it is not an allergy, it is super sensitive skin!

I thought for sure you were going to say that your eyes were sore from all the wildfire smoke.

I've had this problem periodically too, but not for some time now. If it persists, use it as an excuse to try some new eye makeup!

I have to use hypo allergenic mascara and eyeliner or after a few hours my eyes get bloodshot like I smoked weed all night.
I did find not bothering with mascara along the lower waterline and just darkening my lower lashes did just fine with much less irritation.

As with others, it sounds like a mild allergic reaction to me. My mom learned the hard way that she was allergic to a new mascara - by ending up in the ER - so I'm glad it was nothing that serious for you!

You're supposed to replace eye makeup fairly often. I don't remember how often. Maybe every few months. If you've had it for a while, pretty good chance that's the problem.

I have periodic burning of my eyes and after putting on my eye makeup they are often extremely bloodshot. Kind of a no go when your eyes are so much a part of what makes you pretty and attractive. Then it takes days for the burning and bloodshot eyes to return to normal.

I've tried to figure it out, but haven't yet. The advice about replacing old eye makeup is probably a good thing to do. As I buy new makeup in the future I need to mark each item with the date I bought it. In addition, I think I'll email or call the different makeup manufacturers to see what the recommended expiration date is on each product.

Also, I've never checked to see if any of my makeup is hypo allergenic, so that's another thing to do.

Give me some time and I'll let everyone know what worked.

Kelsey, I often have the same issue. I think in my case it's the remover. So I try to minimize by scrubbing first with soap and water, and then remover, and then rinsing well again. Seems to help a little.

I have the same problem. Don't know if it's the makeup, or the removing it that irritates my eyes. I used to wear contacts only when I dressed. So my eyes were never really used to the contacts. Then I ordered some fem glasses online, and that helped some. When I remove the makeup, if I pull down my lower eyelid, there is always a little bit of eyeliner down under the lid. I'm leaning toward the removal that is causing the irritation.

I find removing eye makeup to be tough for sure, particularly mascara! That said though never any significant issue wearing but some with removing. Have you tried eye makeup remover, it's specifically designed for removing the tough stuff from the eyes, beats a lysol wipe lol 😵

Welcome Kelsey.....it is a great place. I too suffer from this. I use makeup remover, then take a hot shower. after I apply good old male moisterizer all over my face and this helps...

Well, lots of great advice here and I think I may have it narrowed down to the removal. Kelsey should be removing, not him!! Lol
Just think I was maybe a little too rough and trying to do it too fast in an area that doesn't usually get things poked and prodded into..... My eyes!!! Heads outta the gutter hahahaha.
I'll start with being more gentle as all of the products I use are very good quality and are hypoallergenic.
Ameli may have been onto something regarding the wildfire smoke as it was really quite bad at that particular time.
We'll see how it goes the next time. :)

This, I'm curious about. Happen to have a jar in the pantry. We use it to calm the cradle cap on my child's head. Works wonders. Great idea. Thanks

Not so, I use body works coconut body butter on my legs for moisturizer, which she has applied on me, so, it's the perfect disguise bahahahaha :)

I'm with Tracii on this. I noticed eye issues before and after removing my makeup after evenings out.

The last few times I've left off mascara completely and my eyes were more comfortable all evening and after makeup removal!

Some makeup and removal creams do affect my eyes too.

Some pancake makeup I have upsets my eyes more than the removal creams.

Olive oil is a great remover, just wash your face with a perfumed soap after to hide that nice virgin olive oil smell.

That might be good on a bagel. :)

I forgot to mention that I use soap on a washcloth on my eyelids to get eye liner off. And despite being careful, I think some gets in the eyes.
