Got invited to the company picnic today and had a great time.
Being a retiree I hadn't seen many of my old work mates in 3 years or so.
I was in 50/50 mode as usual girls jeans (skinny) with the bottom of the legs rolled up a few times, blue Converse tennis shoes, ladies t shirt light blue with light pink stitching on the seams.
Small hot pink hoop ear rings and a hot pink band holding my hair in a ponytail.
No make up or eyeliner because it was really hot out.
Not a harsh word at all from the guys I worked with for 30 + years.
One of the office ladies(Cheryl) I worked with for years came up and gave me a hug and said its really great to see you.
I said the same and she took my hand and walked me over to where a group of the office ladies were eating.
We chatted a bit and Cheryl said OMG your hair has gotten so long and it looks great. I thanked her and one of the office ladies from the main office said "cute earrings" with a bit of a smirk/disapproval tone and Cheryl said hey I love them and the hair band is totally cute.
We chatted a bit and I told Cheryl look I better go I think "miss thing" has an issue with me so I'll catch you later.
Wandered about talking with old friends and had a great day and none of the guys had any issues with the way I presented.
I did run into Cheryl later in the day and she gave me a big hug and thanked me for coming.Gave a small tug on my ponytail and a kiss on the cheek.
I was totally blown away by her to be honest.
We had worked together for so long, had chats about life and failed marriages we have both had over the years and shared a lot together.
She is really gorgeous but is the humble type that never thought she was all that good looking.I always wanted to ask her out but never had the guts to ask.

Oh I won a new crock pot in the prize drawings too woo hoo!!! I really needed a new one LOL
Awesome day overall.

Tracii,

Wow, you are one brave woman! I would NEVER have the nerve to do what you did. I'm extremely impressed with both your courage and the behavior of your co-workers. I'm very happy it turned out so well for you. Maybe people are starting to accept us. People like you are pushing back the boundaries and demonstrating that we are not the freaks many think of us as.

Thank you for sharing as such positive examples of people's reactions, especially to someone they know well, as it demonstrates to me that the pitch forks and torches are something that many of us fear, but probably will not be brought to bear against us. I suppose it's like going to High School dances when I was a Freshman. I just knew I would be shunned by all the girls and ignored by my school mates, left there standing by myself in a sea of people; neither of which transpired. It didn't matter, each time I suspected the worst again. After many times of having a good time, I came to the conclusion that I was not only accepted, but welcomed back as a valuable participant.

Congratulations on such a memorable day and winning the crockpot! I never win anything (sob).

Sweet story. Thanks for sharing. Did you present as female at work before retirement? I'm curious as to how much of a surprise your presentation might have been. I love how you dressed exactly right for a picnic; neither over or under dressed. How could you not be fully accepted, right?

Great day I'd say, it's always fun to be yourself and if your comfortable with yourself so many others are also. I would have had to let my hair down; literally. And a door prize to boot! Love happy endings.

No Suzanne I never dressed enfemme when I worked there.
Its the look I do everyday so I was comfy with it and didn't care what the others thought about it.
I did see a teen girl there that may have been transboy but I never talked to her/him.
I acted like me and I guess the clothes didn't matter.

That one acknowledgement is worth more than all those who didn't get the clue you were waving around with flares & fireworks.

Willful ignorance is a sad thing.

Happy & sad at the same time.

Don't know about flares and fireworks moose but the acceptance of one person trumps all.
Not sure if anyone took the hint but hey I went as myself and the tranny swat team didn't show up.

Hmm.

Work environments and family environments are very different.

Those work ones really only last for as long as you work there. Those family ones are different. You are kinda
stuck with them. (Hi Uncle Lenny!!)
