View Full Version : Crossdressing at costume party

Hi, a couple of my friends are throwing a costume party, and the theme is Big Bang Theory (the comedy tv show). I was thinking of dressing up as Penny (the hot blond chick), but I’m not sure if I should. No one knows I dress, and I don’t want to come out or raise suspicions. What do you suggest I do?
Secondly, should I go as Penny, what should I put on to make me look like her? What would be the most fitting outfit (what type of clothes, hair style, cup size,…)? I am familiar with the show, but it’s really hard to choose a good outfit, since she has so many clothes and hair styles to choose from. If you could give me some suggestions here or put some links to some of her outfits, that’d be really helpful! X
Edit: one more question, should I also wear lingerie underneath, even though no one there will get to see it?
Update: Thanks for all your advice, after reading your comments and thinking it through, I've decided to do it! I just have to make sure I play it off as a joke, don't take it too seriously. I've been looking at lots if outfits, but in the end I' ve come up with this one: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/3f/d0/d2/3fd0d24ba33c84cfa6ec39985ad3f122.jpg I also looove her hairstyle here so I'll probably go with that one as well. Now I need to find a matching wig and dress, so if you see something that looks similar, please let me know.
Also, I still haven't decided on whether or not I should lingerie, any advice on that?
Update 2: Unfortunately something happened to the organizer of the party who's also a good friend. I'm not going to say what exactly as it's quite personal, but because of it the party has been delayed, hopefully not cancelled. I'd say it'll happen around November-December. I know I probably come across as a faker now and I don't blame you, but this is really what happened. I just prefer not to go into detail about it as like I said, it's a personal matter. On the bright side, this does give us some extra time to discuss the outfit. I'm still really unsure about the lingerie: should I, what pieces and size, and where should I get it from?

As tempting as it is, unless the theme is for all to CD as someone on the show, it will leave a memory in peoples minds and they will likely wonder if there is more to it for you. Especially if you do it well.
If you instead dress up as the very nerdy Amy, who is not very sexy or feminine, you have a better chance of getting away with it, but ... it wouldnt be the same fun, would it ;-)
On the other hand, if you dont mind people eventually figuring it out or at least having some suspicion that there is more to it, then just go for it and have fun. Even better if you can get a GG friend to go as one of the guys on the show.
You could also go as AquaMan ... but "AquaMan sucks!" ... :-)

Well if you're set on going as Penny, you have 2 real choices.. cute shorts and a tank top (with pigtails or ponytails to suit) to reflect her casual look, or a ruched side bodycon dress (with hair down) and a pair of gorgeous matching heels. (match these with a cute clutch bag) to reflect her going out side.
As Suzie says, Amy or even Bernadette would be a "less obvious" choice, but less fun. If your intention is to stay firmly in the wardrobe, then doing any of these well with makeup and wig etc will jeopardise that, th eonly way is to play it as an obvious "joke" drag outfit. outrageous makeup and deliberately ****ty look, but let's be honest, you don't want to look like some outrageous drag act, you want to look as fabulous as possible.
If it were me, I'd just go for it, and get a close friend (who knows about Jessica) to pretend they helped you with makeup and clothes etc so that you can always laugh it off as just a party thing if you want to.
You could also always go for the wonder woman outfit that Penny wore for the new year party at the comic book store, which would be more of a party outfit than going as "just" Penny.

Well I was thinking of playing it off as a joke (just like Abigail said) so it won't be taken seriously. And yes Amy is not who I'd wanna be ;)

Since this is your first post on this forum, we don't know if you are an experienced crossdresser, a beginner or what. The risk of one of us going to a party dressed and around people we know is, we would do a much better job and have more of the "equipment" than a guy who is doing this just for a party. How many non-crossdressers do you know who have a $300 pair of silicone boobs, a $200 pair of padded panties, a $100 wig and all the clothes, shoes and makeup to pull this off? Probably none.
If you want to go to a party with friends dressed as a female and not make them start thinking that this isn't your first time, you'll have to stuff your bra with tissues, wear it too high on your chest, wear a cheap costume wig, no hip padding, wear way too much makeup and clothes and shoes from the second hand store. I don't know about you but for me, that would take all the fun out of it.
If you want to dress as Penny, watch the show and pick out an outfit that you like. Take a picture, then go shopping. Or look on the Internet for still photos.
BTW: It would be pretty difficult for most of us to pull off the "hot chick" (Penny) look. You will have to shave your arms and legs to even get close. As mentioned above, Amy would be far easier.

@abigail
sounds good, any specific outfits of hers u really like? And it would have to be Penny, no doubt. And yes play it off as a joke is a great plan. I could definitely ask someone to help me with the transformation, even though she doesn't know bout Jessica (no one does). Also I wouldn't go for the wonder woman outfit, cause then I'd look like Wonder Woman, not Penny ;)
@krisi
I am a beginner, I don't dress everyday and don't have my own clothes. Of course I'm not going to spend that much money on a one-off outfit, I'll have to do with other people's clothes or maybe something from the internet, like I'm not going to buy breast forms if I can use water balloons. And there are so many outfits of her I love, so it's hard to choose from that. Also shaving is not a problem, sure Amy would be easier but I have the feeling I can pull it off. I don't have to be too convincing and don't need all the proper cd stuff

Okay, well if you're going to go for the "caricaturised" take on things, you need to emphasise the long blonde hair and the massive cleavage.. balloons can obviously do for the cleavage, but you have to go for either a keyhole type dress (usually bodycon style) which Penny wears a lot, or a low cut Cami style top matched with either cute jeans or a matching mini-skirt.
She wears a lot of Dark reds and deep oranges, as well as wearing blue from royal to cerulean.
So.. cheap wig from the net (long platinum blonde party wigs should be around $15-$20 online), any cami or strappy crop top with a pattern from a thrift store (Penny even manages to pull off paisley print), $5. Cheap jersey skirt in a matching colour $5-$10 online or from any clothing store. then whatever shoes you want with them.
Alternatively, a nice keyhole bodycon dress instead of the crop top and skirt.. you should be able to find something online for $10-$20. Make sure the "boobs" are pushed together and showing over the top of the cami and then work hard on learning some of her more "blonde" phrases to emphasise the character rather than the look itself.
Hope you have fun with it :)

@abigail
Ok thx, good descriptions, I'll have to decide which look to go for. If you see a good wig tell me. Didn't know her cleavage is that huge, although I definitely don't mind ;) And yes blonde phrases are a great idea, do you any good, typical ones? Haven't seen the show in a while
Krisi

Penny does not have large breasts. Turn on the TV. The show runs once a week and reruns run every day in my area. Or, buy a DVD.

08-04-2015, 07:25 AM
I know the show and I've seen her outfits on google, it's just soo hard to pick one that also fits for the party.
AbigailJordan
08-04-2015, 08:20 AM
Her breasts aren't large, I never said they were. However, when wearing tank tops and cami tops, she tends to wear a push up bra and displays a generous cleavage. Hence me only ever referring to the cleavage and not to her actual breasts. I hope that clears up any confusion.

Go as Amy...
Taylor186
08-04-2015, 08:57 AM
"...should I go as Penny, what should I put on to make me look like her?"
99+% of experienced crossdressers could not pull off her look. A wig, makeup and clothes will not make you look like her unless you look like her to begin with.
"Well I was thinking of playing it off as a joke (just like Abigail said) so it won't be taken seriously."
Been there, done that. If you do it well you will be whisper outed whether you think it is a joke or not. If you choose to not do it well you might as well go as Amy because you will not come off looking like, as you call it, "the hot blond chick."

I'm not expecting to look just like her, there's no way that will happen, but as long as people get the idea of penny when they see mee that's good enough. It's just a costume party, not a drag contest :)
Taylor186

No problem. My experience was different when going to "just a costume party." Good luck.

I would go the whole way, but then I'm into "outing" myself. if you want to be secret, don't, if you're ready to come out, then its a great way, and if no-one really realises, well then no harm done!

Jessica, don't kid yourself and don't buy into the "it's a party so it's ok" idea. 100% of the party goers will think there is more to you than they previously suspected. 100%. I would bet my life that the majority will instantly assume you are a closet cross dresser. And the more you attempt to look like an actual woman, the greater the suspicion.
The question is, do you care what anyone suspects? You are not outing yourself but you will set a new baseline for your friends.
[...] as long as people get the idea of penny when they see mee that's good enough.
So wear a "Hello, my name is Penny" tag and you're all set no matter how good or bad your execution is.
For the rest, people will think what they want to think and there's nothing you can do about that. Which is always the case.

Vanilla guys dressed as women tend to lean toward the ridiculous and over the top. Think; balloons for boobs. Cheesy nylons and shoes, tennies? Terrible wig and make up with a heavy 5 oclock shadow.
If u look too good or make it look like u care? Folks MAY TALK!
There is a good chance the joke will follow you, so be prepared to joke with it long after the party!

I think the answers to whether you should or shouldn't and to what extent lie in the rapport you have with your friends. If they know you as the type to take the unexpected approach... and with dedication and flair... then your secret may easily be overlooked as something they deem affectionately as "SO you." On the other hand, if they know you to be a little more on the reserved side, then your sudden abandonment of character would certainly raise questions.
Then again, raising questions can sometimes be fun. :) Of course, if you're 100% committed to keeping things on the hush, then it's simply out of the question.

Well, if you show up at a Big Bang Theory themed costume party as a blonde with boobs and a skirt, they aren't gonna think "Leonard" :D

Hey, you're a new member, welcome!
I also love Penny, I've loved Kaley Cuoco since 8 Simple Rules.
Ok, I had something similar back in the day when I started out. You might kinda regret doing so if its people whom you know very well. It just sort of outs you in a way that you can't control. For me it was a bunch of car friends on a forum but it would have been worse if it were my close friends as it can tear things apart. I now live my cd life alone which I'm content with.
Regarding the costume, put some money into it and make it as authentic as possible. Try Forever 21 or a thrift store when shopping for items similar to hers. When you're done, do what you want in it.
Yes, do wear lingerie. It would feel weird with boxers.

In your first post you write "No one knows I dress, and I don’t want to come out or raise suspicions. What do you suggest I do?" Now, you post "They somewhat see me as a joker, so I kinda have the feeling I can get away with it"
I'm left wondering why you asked in the first place if you had already made your decision.
As for the outfit, you've seen the show and you can buy a DVD if you need more ideas on the outfit. "Penny" has worn hundreds of different outfits over the course of the show. Most of her outfits and looks will be very difficult for a natural male to pull off because there's lots of skin showing and showing as well as cleavage.

Well others here suggested to play it of as a joke, which I had been thinking about as well, but wasn't sure if that was the right thing to do. And for the outfit, that's why I need advice on what would be the best kind of outfit for me.

I have done a New year's eve party dressed on a few occasions and each one of them in rocky horror theme, no one knew that i dressed and no one has mentioned anything since (i was using socks with bird seed for boobs and not my forms to give it away though lol).
On one there were 3 of us dressed rocky horror and they did a best dressed drinking game and i came 2nd lol.
If its something that you would enjoy without giving too much away with the big smile on your face for being dressed go for it, but if you have any reservations seriously think about it first.

You can keep it simple with tight jeans and a camisole with a big bra. Or you can wear a cocktail dress. So to be her, you would want big boobs(just go with a bra) and blonde wig to begin with.

If you do a web search on "big bang theory" and "costumes", you will find dozens of photos and even costumes to buy or rent. I'll suggest the uniform she wore as a waitress if you want something associated with her specifically. As I recall, it's a yellow blouse and blue skirt.
You've got to show some initiative here, we can't do all your research.

I went to a costume party last year at halloween, i still am being called wonder woman sometimes, but i can tell you that the women love it, and still tell me how hot i looked, but beside that no bad has come of it. Wear something hot as some of the ladies here said, tell them isn't this the right party costume there will always be some that can't get out of the male cookie cutter and look at you think why, they are the ones that have troubles with there own personal image. have fun and you will know who is there quick to have a good time and who just wanted to judge. hugs

Hi-new member. (And the obligatory but very true-thank you for this forum!)
I had this come up re office Halloween contest this last year. Pretty easy for me. I wouldn't bother to "dress" as Amy (like others said, whats the fun?), and I agree with the other comment-100% chance of getting outed if I did Dana the way I want to do Dana. I am nowhere near Pamela7's level of guts to get discovered.

There is a line that should not be crossed when CDing for a costume party /Halloween if you do not want to raise suspicions.. The line is not that well defined but one should not dress !00% female.
One thing that is a giveaway is if you wear high heels ......and are proficient with them.
Every friend who dressed as a female like for Halloween usually his work boots etc .... more like some cartoon character.
Certainly no lingerie was worn excerpt for maybe a bra for rudimentary breasts.
The effect should be it's a costume...... a joke ..... and not trying to be !00% female.
Otherwise, the people around you will think that you take dressing as a female just a bit too seriously which is exactly what you do not want.
On the other hand, if you do do not care what people think, go for it .......just stay away from any Howard Wolowitz. :)

I've dressed up for a party before and it was great fun. I was careful not to give the game away, I didn't wear underwear and made sure I looked like a man in a dress. If you want to wear make-up I'd suggest it to a female friend 'as a joke' and you'd be surprised how keen they will be to do your make-up.

Hmm that's true too, I'd love to wear it and go all the way. Maybe I should just stick to a bra and panties then. Would it be less suspicious if I borrowed one from a friend?

Im glad your going to do it, youll love it. This reminds me of this past Halloween, my wife dressed as the Pope and I dressed as a Nun, with wig, full lingerie under my habit, and even a new pair of flats. My wifes whole family was there as well as our daughter, her BF even grabbed my boobs squeezing my silicone inserts. I played it off as a good laugh, even had people ask about the shoes and told them it was a small price to pay to finish off the costume. Youll love dressing for the party and your friends will get a good laugh.

It will be fun. My wife and I went as twin girls to a family halloween party, it was a blast. I would be a sexy penny, go all the way with lingerie and a short skirt. I went to my party totally feminine, lingerie including forms, pantyhose, heels, wig and makeup. The girls at the party loved it!! Good luck have fun.

I'm gonna come out here and say I was a halloween dresser for a few years. I know, people look down on that like Christmas-only Christians. You gotta start somewhere, I didn't know I was ever going to be out at the time but it makes sense now in hindsight. I don't really recall ever catching more than the normal ribbing about it, but I tend to hang out with a pretty open-minded crowd. They were just like, well, that's him. They've pretty much all seen me dressed the rest of the year at this point, so I'm sure they've backdated their halloween memories of me by now. Now the subject doesn't come up much, it's like talking about race, if it's not a problem for you, then it seems weird to talk @ with friends. They occasionally expressed support. Biggest factor here to me is really your friends. If I hung out with a lot of southern Baptists or gun-range guys, might be a different story (or not; Isha's experience in the service seems mostly positive). I think to out yourself, you have to look like you're used to it and comfortable with it. If you don't go out a lot, and/or haven't been doing it regularly for a while, you're going to look like just a dude in a dress, no matter what. I'm sure I still look like a dude in a dress to most people who don't know me, unless I'm really working it hard. (It's pretty obvious I don't shave my face a lot; you've got to hit that baby a few days in a row to knock it down enough to not stick up thru foundation =) I think to say more than that you'd have to go into detail about how you feel about not being outed, why, etc. Consider this a test case - if there's some of your friends that get really weird or unfriendly, ponder how long they are going to be your friends anyway. Most people think 'safe' crossdressers are hillarious, expect a good time. Never had a bad halloween myself. Now that everyone knows I have to think of something else to be though, showing up in a skirt & heels this year would be like showing up in jeans and sneakers.
Time to go for the chipmunk costume, I guess. ;)

I myself would go as Bernadette, she is so hot and I love the dresses and tights she wears.

Yes, Bernadette is hot, but what crossdressing guy is five feet tall? Penny is hot but what crossdressing guy weighs 100 lb? Amy is the one we might pull off.

Well to me that doesn't matter, I'm not trying to be too convincing, especially if I don't wanna raise too many eyebrows. Also penny is not the slimmest girl ever, which is fine.

I haven't found the clothes yet, and I'm still doubting bout the lingerie. Also I've never put crossdress pics of myself online, bit scared to do so, but we'll see how it turns out.

I checked your bio. At 22 years of age the crowd you run with should be younger and less judgmental than older folks who are set in their ways. I followed the link to the dress. Underwear? With a dress that short I recommend sheer to waist pantyhose and panties that match the color of the dress. My wife tells me a tight dress when a woman is sitting will rise up three inches. That's why you're going to need pantyhose and a good panty. Also, get a strapless bra. If you do not have breast forms I'm going to recommend getting a Nerf baseball and cutting it in half. Cup size? That depends on whether you want to blow this off as a joke or be convincing. I suspect a younger crowd may be more prone to do a little grabbing and squeezing. You do not want water balloons to pop. I read the comment about being too proficient with high heels. Wear a low heel..maybe 2 1/2 inches that are not narrow.
Yes, if you're too convincing some may be left questioning, but, then again, you may find out who is really accepting of cross dressers and who is not. At age 22 I would have made a really sexy long legged blond and had a lot of fun. Now? Aging guys would really raise suspicions.
Enjoy yourself

I wish I was invited to a costume party. I have never been invited to one:eek:
You know your situation better than anyone here and are aware of the risk you'll be taking.
However, the fact that you are thinking about it means you are probably going to do it someday....
You might regret it, if you do it. If you don't do it, you will definitely wish you had.
I say:
GO FOR IT!
Go all the way. I crossdressed for Halloween a few years in a row, and then I finally came out to some people. Some of them had no idea.
If they figure out you are a CD, you will find out what kind of friends you have. They may surprise you.

Jessica - There are already a lot of good suggestions. I would think if I wanted to minimize suspicions because I looked too good or walked too easily in heels, I would either go for a comic look (obvious man in dress with wig) or go for an extreme drag queen look with 6 inch heels that force you to look unfamiliar in high heels. Overdo makeup, hair, accessories, nails. Laugh a lot. Ignore after-party remarks, if any, and they will not continue. By all means, enjoy yourself and have fun.

You remind of a Halloween party I went to a long, long time ago (OK, 35 years ago) and far, far away (OK, only 250 miles).
I went as a French maid, with a costume I put together myself, not a package from a shop. I borrowed one of my wife's strapless bras, men's high cut undershorts, lacy black leotard with spaghetti straps, semi-transparent miniskirt, fishnet stockings (actually pantyhose), little lace cups and a lace hat. Men's shoes, no makeup, no wig.
I won the prize for the best costume. The only thing they had to decide was if it was the best boy's costume or the best girl's.
A guy stuck a dollar bill in my bra.
There was a GG who also came as a French maid, but she couldn't find fishnet stockings. We had fun comparing where we got the parts of our costume.
Back then, I wasn't even out to myself. The only reason I got to do it is that my wife was the butler.

I think you are new here, what is your CDing like beyond the party? If we know what you have done I think we could get a better idea of what you don't want questioned? Do you go out dressed? Just at home to what degree, full out or just some underdressing?
What clothes do you have already? You mention that you would need a bra so I guess you don't have any? Do you do have your own makeup?
I think these are important things for those here to consider before we can best advise you. Looking forward to your reply, Thx Sara

I don't go out dressed, I only dress secretly at home, mostly full. I don't own any clothes but always put on my mom's or sisters'. So if I were to wear a bra it would have to be one of theirs of or a girlfriend

So how was the party?
Well unfortunately something happened to the organizer of the party who's also a good friend. However, this does give us some extra time to discuss the outfit.
Back then, I wasn't even out to myself. The only reason I got to do it is that my wife was the butler.
ah yes... the butler did it!
