Just spent 8 days out in Idaho on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River rafting with a group from here in Arkansas. The MFSR is also known as the River of No Return/Frank Church wilderness area. Large rapids, white water, big sky country! On day two of our voyage, I and four other river rookies were "initiated" by the rest of the group by having our toenails painted up. Ah yes, humiliation by making you have something on you that is associated with the other sex! Hum... you think folks could come up with something new.
Any way, we get our toes painted and the tradition is that you have to take another float before the polish wears off. During the trip we ran into two horseback riding cowboys staying in a nearby lodge. Two of us rookies and a female member were on the trail having just looked at some Indian cliff paintings near our camp. The lead cowboy asked how we were doing, etc. and then asked "say I noticed that the two guys have painted toes and the girl doesn't, this mean anything?" We explained about the tradition and that she was on her third trip, so no polish. The two cowboys both had a chuckle and then the back cowboy asked if we had the polish with us, because the horse he was on was making it's first ride on the river trail and needed something on its hoof!:)
The trip was fantastic, and Jennifer at Home's hometown of Boise was beautiful. We didn't get a chance to meet, maybe next time.
Below are a few photos of the rookies, I'm up first in Purple, and the only GG is the last one. And the nail polish on my toes today? Well, when I returned home, my wife had gone on a trip of her own for the rest of this week. That color was definitely not going to go with what I have on thru Sunday! Its off and my toes are now a lovely pink. Details of the rest of my week later!
And be sure to keep your toes clean on any raft trip you take!
