Hi all:

I wanted to share this fun little story from Halloween. I dressed as, well, mostly me (Tina), but I glammed up a bit with a pinkish wig, choker, pink dress and crinoline and purple lip gloss. Sweet Baby Cakes and I were at our small town Halloween carnival with our dogs - two mini poodles - when three little Frozen princesses and their moms approached. The girls, all around 3 years old, I'g guess, wanted to pet our dogs, so the moms asked permission.

Our littlest poo is a bit skittish, but wouldn't ever snap, so I said sure, but crouched down to the kids' level to keep our puppy calm.

That's when the littlest princess stopped and stared into my eyes. She got lost in my face for a few tics, then finally asked me, "Are you wearing a costume?"

Wow! It maybe is the nicest thing anyone has ever said about me. I teared up a bit, actually.

But pulling myself together, I responded, "Kind of. Are you wearing a costume, or are you really a princess?"

She laughed and said it was a costume. So I said, "Well, I bet your mom thinks you're actually a princess. So maybe yours is only kind of a costume, too!"

I left it at that. I'll let her folks handle gender questions. But hopefully I started them off on the right path.

But that girl not being sure whether my look was the real me, or a costume, is a moment I will treasure forever.

Thanks little princess!

That was a awesome response- turn the question around as a compliment to the kid. Very swift presence of mind Tina! Good for you, that was very cute!

Triple snaps for that one!

Yeah ... There's a complicated back story to this year's Halloween, so I was debating whether to share anything.

Nutshell - this was the first time SBC and Tina were out together, and, to put it mildly, that aspect of the night was a disaster. Very sad. My exchange with those little girls was the lone bright moment in a pretty dark night, sadly.

Hi Donna: I appreciate your concern, but part of the tension was about feelings of insecurity, and if I posted here all about it (from my point of view) it would be disrespectful of me and it would make those issues worse. We continue to work on our dialogue with each other, so I'm hopeful of positive steps for us. Part of that is me honoring her feelings. I hope that makes sense.

Very sweet story and i think you handled very nicely .I have heard little girls or boys ask their mom or dad why i had long hair .The parents were very polite and said sometimes boys have long hair and it seem to satisfy them and answer their question .I realize it is not quite the same as your post it did make me feel better :)
