I'm surprised that someone would have to ask the question. I would also warn that even if an age and location is stated, it's not necessarily factual. Members can put anything they want in their profiles. For that matter, they can post any photo they want as their avatar. It could be themselves, a friend or a random photo from the Internet.

I would guess, mostly for their privacy. Most wouldn't want to be recognized or approached in their local area "Hey aren't you on 'crossdressers.com'?" Some people are discrete, some are not. Personally I am not "out" to everyone. The lingerie shops, of course, my wife and maybe two other people, not counting the folks here. I am sure no one wishes something held over their head...

I figure it is an issue of maintaining one's privacy. I think a lady new to this site and young would think she has a lot to lose if she were to be recognized. Yes, I'm sure there are many logging onto this site late at night or when her spouse is not home, and, making sure she clears the sites she visited. If you do not clear the "history" and her wife or S/O sees this site and starts to peruse the general open to the public area, her wife may be able to piece things together. I don't remember if a non member can access the tab of who I am, which has my date of birth. I also have the general location of where I live. I am sure if my wife, who knows I am a cross dresser (DADT) would be able to piece together enough info and come to the conclusion Stephanie47 is her husband. If you're going to make adverse or terse comments about a loved one you may want to make them in the sections not viewable to non members.

I am a retiree, so, I have nothing to lose with regards to any adverse employment issues. Yes, nobody really cares, but, they do care. Anyone who thinks people do not have opinions that are negative concerning people who are not like themselves is living in a fantasy world.

Who else may be able to identify me? My two kids and their spouses? I hope a discovery of my cross dressing would not overshadow 35 or 40 years of a loving relationship.

I can understand the reluctance to post anything, which is what I suspect goes on with the very high numbers of non members lurking as "guests" on any thread.

The "visitor" issue is why I mainly post in the member sections (photos and shopping) as it adds a layer of "security". It's also why I have vacillated on having a pic as an avatar. I guess I am getting a little bolder, but I sure understand girls wanting and valuing a little privacy.

I certainly understand the privacy need. I lurked for many years before deciding to join. When a girl joins, she might consider showing the city, if a large one, or the county, if a small one. An Avitar need not be shown, unless its one from public domain that you like. As to age and birthday, fudge a little. A brand new, young appearing member, Jolynne Wynn, showed her county, which has over 3 million people, so it surely was safe to show it. That's the way to do it, especially if you'd like to contact a sister for whatever reason.

Keep in mind that we grew up with shame and the constant fear of inadvertently being outed, up until the Internet came to our rescue with Forums such as this one which told us that we were far from being alone and that we had nothing to be ashamed of.

Kind of like the gays and lesbians declaring themselves to be "out and proud" these days, coupled with a solid helping of "I'm old, I've earned the right to say what I think and be who I am, and I don't give a rat's @ss if somebody doesn't like it.". In other words, outspoken, opinionated, self-assured and irreverent as best exemplified by some of the "geezer"-centric sitcoms we grew up with such as All in the Family, Maude, The Jeffersons, and The Golden Girls.

Age 65 and I agree mostly with the last statement. Plus in TG/TS support groups, I always add that since I did all my transition some 35-40 years ago. And have been physical female longer, 38 years, then most of the younger have been alive.

Not so sure of the first about being of the boomer generation. Not of the Internet and for the most part pre Personal Computers generation , just made our journey harder back than.

It's not that it shows up late; that's apparent by the threads about when we started crossdressing, which is almost always earlier than 18. It's just that the crossdressers HERE tend to be older. Another guess: Perhaps many of the younger ones are still either in the denial stage, where they think it will go away, or like I was, thought that they have 'beaten it' by not doing it for quite a while. Whenever I was in relationships with women the desire to crossdress was either non existant, or occured so seldom that it was just a transient desire that passed pretty quick. In the daytime I was busy with work, and my nights were usually filled with dating and going out. All my emotional needs were being met, so, no stress to make the desire to crossdress 'kick in'.

It's interesting to me to see that the majority of those responding are over 50 and many of us are in our 70's.

The reason I asked the question is that cross dressing can be very lonely activity. I understand the desire for privacy, but as others have said, unless one lives in a very small town it's virtually impossible that your privacy would be violated through posting location here. Giving a little information in your profile may get you some new friends with common interests. To increase the odds that you make a friend with common interests it also seems logical to me to also post age with location. The Places to Go, Places to Meet Forum is an avenue for meeting people but it is lightly used which suggests that there isn't a desire to make friends through that means. Or maybe there is no interest with most in getting together with another CD. I can understand how that could be true within a DADT relationship. Perhaps the Male to Female Crossdressing Forum provides sufficient means for feeling connected without actual contact.

Any other thoughts? Maybe I should start a new thread with this post?

There are 2 aspects to the privacy thing. You mentioned one and that is external. But, the other is internal and that has to do with ones living situation. There are many here who dress but that is, or can be, a source of friction within the family. Keeping a low profile, in every respect, can be a high priority.

For me, I try to maintain my privacy and some level of anonymity. While some family and friends, including my wife know I like feminine clothes, there are some things I may share here that I may not be ready to share with others in the real word. Nobody knows me by "Andrea", and my selection of it was quite arbitrary.

But to answer your question... I'm on the "backside of thirty", a few grey hairs, old enough to know what a phonograph is, but young enough to stay in trouble most of the time. And my location is in the south east quadrant of the U.S.

this was very interesting to read through---often I cannot take the time to read through an entire thread---but I had to on this one---and I see that there are at least seven persons that are in the area that I am near---so what, if anything, does one do with such information? Perhaps that would be a followup question...how would one go about meeting with another CDer if they've never, ever done that before and don't know how they feel about whether or not they would ever try that.

With each day that passes the less and less I care if I am outed. In the apartment complex I live in now people have seen me in both modes. Also, in the apartment complex in Phoenix, Arizona people had seen me in both modes.

In addition, a former employer also knows that I am trans. I do not think he had in any solid proof, but I did leave clues along the way. Now, I could have denied it, but I am just getting tired of hiding who I am, so I confirmed his suspicions. Before confirming his suspicions he told another employee there about me, and so I took the opportunity to come out to her, even showing her my profile on this site. BTW, being trans has nothing to with why I am not working for him anymore.
