My car is 18 years and the transmission not switching into second gear when it should.

Man am I on the wrong website again. I guess I'll put on my wedding gown and heels and read some posts, the car can wait!

I had to rebuild an automatic transmission on an '86 Toyota at the 10 yr mark myself...wasn't very successful so I took up crossdressing ☺ Love the pic though, now that's HOT!

Hell-o Judy,
Trans not shifting gears huh. Seems to me there should be quite a few
diagnostic replies to this thread!
BTW, where exactly do you attach that ASE patch to your uniform?
Much Love,
Kristyn

Don't worry. Second gear is rarely used, anyway.

The automatic T went out in my 1976 Dodge Aspen about 16 months ago, would not shift into 3rd. i found one on the internet at a junk yard 130 miles away, for only $150. I am not a great mechanic. It took 8 days for me to get the old one out, and get the new one in, and reconnect everything in the driveline, connections, but no way would i do the job in lady clothes...unless underdressed.

Well, no wonder it does not work. This tranny is in the wrong position.

reminds me of the time my Wife and I were going out to dinner and I had gotten ready early for a change. While she got ready, I went out to the garage and dropped an engine in the car I was rebuilding...in a mid-thigh mini dress and 3 inch heels...

Learn to shift a manual in heels :D

When I was younger had automatics. Switched to manual in the 1980s. Didn't drive in heels till last year. Have a Mustang and tend be a little lead foot so to speak. Determined to drive in 4 in heels. Had to learn new footings and clutch position. My poor transmission at times.

Bought my first car in '72 and I've never owned an automatic; 4, 5 and currently a 6 speed. No problem driving in heels (3" to 3 1/2"), but I can't do heel & toe rev matching for downshifts due to limited flexibility in my right ankle.

LOL! Nothing like getting down and dirty and not breaking a nail. :) I've only changed one transmission in my life and I said from that day on that the transmission shop can have the next one.

Agree - Save the Manuals! -- Car and Driver magazine. So how is it that my favorite magazine goes by CD :heehee:

The two cars I drive and my wife's car are all 6 speed manuals. I have not tried heel n toe in heels but am able in guy shoes. We have had a few automatics over the years including a F150 we also have for hauling/towing - but mostly manuals.
Did I say I appreciate my wife for indulging my car hobby?

LOL! Nothing like getting down and dirty and not breaking a nail. :)

My partner and I had a rule, we worked on our own vehicles, unless more then one person job. I had a 82 Dodge Challenger. It had an air dam under front to push air in engine compartment. Problem was in winter snow it acted like a snow plow. Decided to take it off. My partner always loved to take pics of me when doing messy things. Hair and face always covered in oil grim and road stuff. Not easy being a girl all of the time.

I've always had to do it opposite the correct way. My feet point outwards. For me to have my toe on the brakes and heel on the accelerator, my right knee would have to roll way over to the left. So I cheat and do heel on the brakes and toe up at the top of the accelerator. That adds a bit to the difficulty, but that's as good as it's going to get. I can hit it like glass maybe 50% of the time.

Auto for an everyday driver but if I get another muscle car it will be a 4 speed I'm sure.

I agree, but unfortunately clutches do. On my old cars that was a weekend job, but on a modern car with a transverse engine the clutch is buried in the middle of everything. Easy to install as a unit at the factory, but $1000 worth of labor to replace a $50 friction disk when it wears out.

My car is 18 years and the transmission not switching into second gear when it should.

Old car? Automatic doesn't shift? My feminine intuition says it is probably a bad rubber vacuum hose to the modulator valve on the side of the transmission.

I've always owned sticks, but after a lot of soul-searching my new car is an automatic. It was available in a new 6-speed, but the idiot designers made the 6th of the new transmission the same as the 5th of the old, perfectly adequate, 5-speed. More shifting for no reason. Obviously, they are playing the "but this one goes to 11!" game with the Walter Mitty racer boys.

The 6-speed version cruises at 3500RPM whereas the automatic cruises at 2300RPM, getting 4 MPG better mileage. Even on hills the automatic seldom goes over 3000RPM although it is capable of 6000 if needed.

I can drive a stick perfectly well in heels, but I have to admit that the automatic is much more convenient, particularly while waiting in line for a valet on a steep driveway.

True but that's still cheaper than a new automatic, and driven carefully a clutch should be able to last 200k km easily. Most people get rid of their cars before then.

Judy, switching to second gear is that the same as getting to second base ?:D

What did you get?

A Honda with a CVT.

I will say that the transmission is the best automatic I've even driven. Completely smooth and direct power delivery. The engine sits at the torque peak continuously while accelerating and at the best economy RPM while cruising. If you really put your foot into it, it jumps to the power peak and things happen faster.. A constant RPM is a bit disconcerting to someone used to sawing a stick shift, but now that I understood what it is doing I recognize the strength of the design. It's doing what conventional transmissions are trying to do.

I've heard of a lot of bad-mouthing of CVTs, but this is Honda's 3rd generation and I doubt that Honda would stick with this design for 20 years if it was causing them problems.

I've had excellent luck out of every Honda car I have ever owned. I had a 1983 Civic that had over 100,000 on it when I bought it because the timing belt had broke and the valves got bent. But once I repaired the head and put on a new belt, I drove the car almost 300,000 miles and sold it to my cousin who drove it for another 150,000 before she totaled it in an accident. Other than brakes and the 75,000 mile timing belt change, that car never had anything major done to it.

When I was in my late teens I would buy women's dress pants/slacks and wear them while working on cars.
I loved the feel of the snug and high waist.
I would wear an untucked Tee shirt to hide how high they were.
I swapped out a lot of engines and transmissions and ruined a lot of slacks.
