I've just had a great day. I've posted before about wanting to get over my worry of being out and about as an en femme day walker. Sorry it's a touch long, but this is my big to do item completely ticked off the list. :heehee:

Today I had to pick up a pair of repaired glasses from The Whitgift Shopping Centre in Croydon, as designer frames come with designer bloody screws. Anyway, I also noticed Dorothy Perkins had a gorgeous skirt in the sale that I liked, but online shopping means getting two sizes and rejecting and returning one or both items.

Without further ado, I had a shower and prep, white puff sleeve blouse, black trousers and my fave Evans ankle boots. So with drop pearl earrings, nice dark blue military-fastening jacket and New Look handbag, off I drove to town. Thought I would do the opticians first to see how I felt. Big breath and as I turned the corner past the Deli shop on the first floor I could see a couple of people here and there check me out, but my confidence was already at 100%. So I slowed down, smiled at a couple of girls in the nail bar and collected my glasses.

First part of mission accomplished, off I went down the escalator to mix with the general populace and in to Dorothy Perkins concession in Debenhams, on the High Street. I asked a lovely young SA what the Trans policy was, off she trotted and returned with "it's totally OK". I like to ask and never assume and was escorted to the changing room. Got the smaller size of the two skirts I had selected, always nice that. I made a point of talking to the SA in the changing rooms and the cashier. Oh, and I went back and thanked the SA for her help earlier.

NOW, I'm really emboldened, off back to The Whitgift. Into two jewellers looking for silver or titanium studs with butterfly backs as my current ones are a nightmare thread and small balls (there's a joke in their somewhere). Then into Superdrug where I got some cotton buds, nail base-coat and lozenges for my sore throat. Then it was back to the car and off home.

I have now been the day walker I craved, pushed my envelop and bought a very sweet skirt too. I made absolutely sure to walk through the most densely populated areas to bust my demons completely. I'm now demon free. Of course, I have to mention the obligatory lack of pitch forks and flaming torches. I did catch one guy looking at me as I came down the escalator and he smiled back when I flicked a grin to him. Oh and not one word from several batches of teenage girls that either crossed my path or looked straight at me as I queued in Dorothy Perkins Changing Room queue.

Still on Cloud 9...wow! :)

Hi Jennifer,

In a nutshell. Try as I might, I never had a moment without someone walking past and looking at what I was taking a pic of. Trying to evade attention and drawing it to myself in one easy move. As my wife says, "you might be intelligent but you lack common sense". Bless her some would say, others tell the truth. I hope she hasn't got an account on here. :heehee:

I had to do my foundation twice today as I got it all wrong first go and then sprayed perfume straight in my eye and after much eye weeping and wiping, had to do my eyes again too. It's still smarting six hours later.

Hell-o Becky,
Congrats on checkin' that box on the bucket list!

Now about that common sense thingy....
Spraying perfume in your eye, yeah pretty sure
that might reinforce your wife's opinion
(just a little bit anyway).

Thanks for sharing.
Much Love,
Kristyn

Well done and very nice.

One of the give aways for spotting a cross dresser is they always never look you in the eye, so one of the best things to do when dressed up is to look at people in the normal way with plenty of eye contact, and smile.
I've never ever thought of asking about "trans policy" of the shop, I normally just ask if I can try something on, answer has over the last 30 years has been "yes"
Correction - I did ask when I went to the local pools, as I know their changing rooms are open plan, so they recommeded the private family changing rooms or the mens room-yuk.

Becky, that's so cool. What is quite strange is that I was doing a "deep clean" on my car today and found a parking ticket from 2008 from, guess where, The Whitgift Shopping Centre!
How mad is that?

Hi Julia,

I always hope such coincidences will coincide with my winning the lottery but no luck so far. The whole area around and including the Whitgift are due to be demolished and completely rebuilt. I really loved today and even went window shopping, as it's no big deal browsing as a girl. :)

very nice go get em :) as to intelligence versus common sense I feel it takes experience = mistakes and what we have done with those mistakes to aquire common sense or as the late will rigers once said some people you can tell them what they need the others well they have to pee on the electric fence and there have been some hilarious occurances with said 1 wire fence

Ive always Ben an "under the cover of darkness " kind of girl.
But last month I went to a MAC cosmetic store and had a full makeover. Spent a brief time browsing dresses afterwards at the Sears next door but that was it. However, your story has given me confidence to try again on my own and brave the sunlight a little longer. I know it's a confidence thing with me. Maybe I need a list of errands to run?

Congrats on a successful outing.

Hi Betty,

That's nice to know my little outing could help you try again. I just thought, "to hell with it" and I promised myself a skirt from Dorothy Perkins, if I succeeded in going to the opticians first. http://www.dorothyperkins.com/en/dpuk/product/sale-offers-3422804/skirts-5208313/black-side-buckle-skirt-4731166?bi=20&ps=20.

I fancy that MAC makeover myself but that's a trip into London. Good luck with your future endeavours.

It takes a lot of pluck to charge head on into the "vanilla" world, but no better way to exorcise those demons of being out and seen. No excuses now. As you have experienced a smile and eye contact will go along way, plus almost all women smile constantly, maybe it's the shopping bug. Good show all around, now your one of the "day walkers" welcome. Thanks for the "up" story.
