Perhaps instigated by the bathroom bills, or just brought into the news during the election cycle, it's readily apparent that we're still in danger just being who we are:
‘Walking While Trans’ Can Be A Death Sentence In The U.S.
At least 22 transgender people have been killed so far this year, matching the previous recorded high in all of 2015.

Actually, if you read the article the number reported is up. The FBI says no trans deaths related to violence in 2011-BS! This has been going on for a long time but as the article said many are not reported or reported incorrectly! The lady in the article has her work cut out for her. I wish her good luck! Be safe but do not let fear guide youaway from going out. Hugs and be safe always even in male mode!! Lana Mae

I have a hard time believing anything from the Huffington Post.
It seems they make up the news to fit an agenda. I wish news outlets would just report event without having to color it with their opinions.

Walking in Chicago is worse.
600 homicides so far.

This thread is misleading. How many of them were killed simply because they were trans. I doubt very many, if any at all. They probably knew their attacker and were killed for other reasons, and just happened to be trans.
I doubt this has anything to do with bathroom laws.
It's not like there are roving gangs of people just looking for transfolk to kill for no reason other than the fact they are trans.
Be careful where you go when you are alone, don't get involved with sketchy people and you will be fine.

Agree completely, which is why I call it the Huffington Compost

I agree. With the Internet, anyone can be a "news reporter". And most of what passes as "news" has an agenda behind it.
Humans have been killing each other since the beginning of time. The difference now is, there are far more of them now and news reporting is better.

I saw a report earlier this week that he number was 26.
this is not a left wing news or right wing news issue. If the numbers come from huff post or fox news the blood looks the same .
There is more and more openness for gender Non-conforming people . Its a mix of good and bad. Its Great that more and more People are getting out as themselves Presenting as the gender they self determine . But at the same time there is still a lot of fear and hate from those who can not accept us.

But how many of the 26 would have been murdered anyway? Was their killing related to them being TS or something else? And how many were engaging in risky behavior at the time? Things like male prostitution?
How big a percentage is 26 compared to all the murders?
It's pretty easy to twist statistics around to attempt to make a point.

I've been going out, mostly unnoticed (as far as I knew) for 40 years. It's different now. Given, I don't pass as well as I used to, so that's a major factor. Still, it just "feels" different, and I'm not able to define that.
I happened on an online episode of "I am Jazz" that showed a threatening phone call to their home, as well as a somewhat vitriolic confrontation (with a woman) at a Q & A thing she and her mother were doing. I'm astounded by the level of hate that comes out of people who are in no possible way effected by anything she does! If they hate her, they'd really hate me!

I am Jazz is 100% scripted. It's not a real show. Most reality shows are fake and scripted. The family's last name isn't even Jennings, it's Bloshinsky.
I would not look toward reality shows about trans people as any kind of source of credibility.

"Reality shows" are anything but reality. It doesn't take a lot of smarts to figure this out.
I remember one where a woman was in a boat alone hunting alligators and she ran out of gas and was wondering how she would get back home. Really? There's another boat twenty feet away with the camera and sound crew. Couldn't they get you home?
If anything, going out in public dressed as a woman is safer now than it was fifty years ago. More people have been exposed to crossdressing and transsexuals and in general it's more tolerated.
The key is to not be stupid. Don't be out alone late at night. Don't be somewhere where you might be mistaken for a prostitute. Don't dress so you might be mistaken for a prostitute.
It's very unlikely that you will be attacked while walking through town in the daytime while dressed as a normal woman. Same for in the mall, a museum, retail store, restaurant, etc..

I agree, Barbara. All the news coverage of transgender issues has raised the awareness of the general public, so people are looking for us a little more than they used to, and the ones looking for us are usually the ones who don't like us.
Over the years, I've met lots and lots of transgender women of all varieties, and three trans women that I was acquainted with were murdered, and two of them were definitely murdered because of their gender status. The murder of the third one may or may not have had something to do with her gender status, not sure.
And yes, one of the women I knew was working as a prostitute due to not being able to find regular employment, but she was just walking on the street when killed. A guy who didn't like "drag queens" deliberately hit her with his car, got out and saw that she was still alive, so he got back in the car and ran over her again to make sure that she was dead. I'd say that's a pretty clear example showing that there ARE people who will kill someone just for being trans.

I'm not sure that many specifically target TG people. When they do it is classified as a hate crime. Part of the solution is to educate people that we are just people like everyone else.
