This morning I went to watch my grandson play hockey with my son ,daughter-in- law and a friend of hers. After the game we all went out for breakfast. The friend of my daughter -in -law is very attractive and was flawlessly made up.I kept looking at her eye makeup because that's where I have trouble.I kept thinking about getting a m to f makeover from this girl, I think she has had some beautician school exposure.I know I could never talk to her about this as she is too close to my daughter-in law, they are like sisters. But it was exciting thinking about it.I have found a place in London Ontario that does makeovers, gives makeup lessons and even arranges shopping trips .I'd have to arrange a weekend in London for some Karen time. That's one of the things on my bucket list.

There's a lot of great makeup tutorials on youtube.
I found it to be a great help, I learned more in one month on youtube than in 50 years of Cding!

If finding the courage to do that is what you're talking about then the fear of doing it is greatly amplified compared to the trepidation experienced when actually doing it. Yes you'll feel somewhat nervous especially at first but once you pass over the threshold the nerves quickly calm down.

Karen,
It's not that bad, I'm a couple of years older and I started to go out in January so I had to sort my makeup out. I just bit the bullet and went to a large Boots store to ask for a colour check, I was passed over to a beautician who was lovely , I sat in a booth and had the check made then she selected the recommended foundation colour and showed how to apply it with a brush. I asked about powder so she suggested a colour and again showed me how to apply it with the brush supplied. We then went round the displays to discuss lipstick colours and suitable mascara .It was a great day even though I was in full public gaze and had a few smiles, nothing terrible happened, the beautician thanked me for allowing her to work on a male subject, it was a new experience for her, and a great one for me.

Despite doing my makeup myself for some time I felt more confident going out knowing I was wearing the correct shade, rather than just grabbing the first one on the shelf and hoping it would be OK. I certainly won't hesitate to ask again for advice !

You say you kept looking at her your daughter in laws friend. Well just try to get that look. Practice is what you need. Just purchase less expensive make up and practice. The hardest part about doing something is getting started. Take a couple of deep breaths and get started. I think whats holding you back is you. It hard but Youtube can make it easier. Start with tutorials on foundation for beginners, then try eye shadow tutorials for beginners. Keep watching tutorials until you are ready. Then when you can try it out.

Like said above, it all takes practice and in time you will find what works well.

Karen,

This is easy, dear. Just make an appointment at your dept store MAC counter. I had one done at an ULTA store (highly recommend them),and I think Sephora outlets have salons too.
I know. Make is exciting and very challenging. The artist who did my face drew a map of my face and a list of products (where and how to apply them too). It was a lesson within the makeover.

BTW, funny story to share. You wrote about gazing upon your daughter-in-laws friend. Trust me, it could be worse.
My son has a wife (my D-in-Law) who is stunningly beautiful; a legitimate 10 even in her 30s. Love her to death like my own daughter. They came over one day to drop off the grandkids so they could attend an evening event. We had some snacks and refreshments while they were here. She (the D-in-law) was wearing an amazing blue cocktail dress w a wrap around front, mid knee length. I couldn't take my eyes off that dress. It was so bad I had to make a conscious effort to NOT look for fear of ogling. I was glad when she and my son finally left, i was about to break out in a sweat and faint.

From one Karen to another, I've heard good things about LeeAnn at Lesada from a cd I met recently here in Niagara. Having her give me a makeover is on my bucket list as well.

Practice and practice. Look at the You Tube videos, go and have a makeover. You will be amazed at the progress you make.
However I do understand the feeling as you see a perfectly turned-out woman and just wish you could make yourself look like that.
I was once hiking through the Alpes Maritime in France and dressed in scruffy but practical male hiking gear with a large pack on my back when I encountered a young woman walking along the trail with absolutely perfect makeup. Same thing when hiking in the Merced River several days out of Yosemite in CA, when I encountered a young woman who also had perfect makeup. Stunning! I just don't know how they did that. They both looked as if they had just stepped out of a professional makeup session.

I think Contessa has some sound advice. Buy some very inexpensive drugstore makeup. Then practice. Watch an hour or two of youtube makeup tutorial videos and practice. Moisturize, drink lots of water every day and then practice again. You'll get there.

Hi Karen, I think Take a walk on the wildside in Toronto still does makeovers they have a fully stocked store as well with everything you could possibly need and Paddy is a very sweet lady who has been doing this since 1987. I had my first makeover with her 25 years ago and she is still going strong. A documentary about her was just made about her and the store. It's a little bit closer than going to London.
