My wife and I were at the mall shopping. Se wanted to go to Dillards (a department store) to buy some new panties. She always buys the same brand and style. We didn't see them so the sales lady took us to the display and found her three pairs. I asked if they had any on sale so the sales lady took us to the sale rack and found several more pairs (same style but different colors) on sale.

This was a "chatty" SA so as she was ringing the panties up she mentioned that they had bras on sale as well. My wife said she didn't need any bras.

This being my queue, I asked the SA "Why are panties referred to as a "pair" while a "bra" is singular?" (It's a very old joke) She looked at me with a confused look and said "That's a good question". I would have thought she was old enough to have heard that one before.

I did read that in Victorian times womens knickers (bloomers?) came in two halves and buttoned up around the middle for access, hence a pair. There could be other reasons but that's the only one I know of. And long before tights there were stockings, again a pair of hose.
