using the search function has been a huge help for me so try that when you have questions.
Nothing wrong with asking on here but you get a faster answer using the search function.

It is not the usual ones that perplex me but the non dressing ones especially Americans. Things like SIL could have more than one meaning and the same goes for abbreviations for names of shops.

I'm American and no idea what SIL is!
My suggestion for EVERYONE HERE, is to ask the thread poster what their "out in left field" abbreviation means.
And, u can be SURE there r many others here that would like to know, too!

Just like in the
Urban Dictionary
It depends on how the word is used and in what context.
The Meaning of SIL. ... So now you know - SIL means "Son-In-Law" - don't thank us. YW! What does SIL mean? SIL is an acronym, abbreviation or slang word that is explained above where the SIL definition is given.

Penny,
I still have a problem from time to time, some used in the US aren't recognised in the UK and the same applies the other way round.
The one I can't bring myself to use is SO, I hadn't heard it before joining the forum, it sounds like you're talking about a commodity rather than a person so I use partner if I don't know the marital status but that also covers a gay person with the same sex partner .

Sunshine in London? ... or is that more of an urban myth maybe?
It can definitely be confusing with terms and abbreviation that are specific to one local version of the English language. I grew up in Europe, learning British English in school as a second language, and now that I live in the US I sometimes get the two versions mixed up.
Teresa,
Partner is also used in Business Partner, Tennis Partner and many other casual relationships. Significant Other, or SO, on the other hand is specifically describing a relationship of a personal and romantic nature.

Suzie,
Thanks for that ,I guess partner is the most suitable in my case, according to your definition. I suppose i could use mate instead, but that also has a broad meaning.
Sorry still don't like SO, but that's just me, a cranky Englishman !

Full disclosure - I had seen the thread & post where SIL was used; so I knew what was meant, but I thought I'd give Secrets an honourable mention :D .
