Just got back last night from a cross country road trip. Made it across Kansas without getting picked up which is a new experience. I've been stopped by the highway patrol the last two times I drove across Kansas. Both times fully dressed and both times - no speeding or any other reason to be picked up. The only incident this trip was when I was at a rest stop, in the ladies room, and someone pulled the door open while I was doing my business. Some stall doors do not really lock and can be pulled open. Well, I shrieked and she quickly closed the door. I don't believe that the intruder realized who she was walking in on, even though my voice is hardly a female voice. I finished and walked out without further incident.
I shopped, tried on clothes, bought some and generally spent 4 days as Sheri. Of course, I got a few "looks" but no other incidents. But also no other positive interaction which I missed. Had a good time.

I do one to two road trips a year to do photography and kleave on one in 3-4 weeks. Take some clothes along, but only for when I'm in a motel room. Would not have the guts to dress while driving, as I go off road a lot and get out of the car many times a day and am often out late. I seldom know where I will spend the night and would feel stressed checking into an unkown motel at night while dressed.
