So the starting point for this is as I've said many times before, deeply in the closet but have the opportunities to go out every now and then.
A few nights ago I was out with by beer buddies(drab) sitting have a pint or two when on the jukebox goes Elbow; One day like this. When the chorus rolls around I paraphrased it in my head, changing it from;
So throw those curtains wide
One day like this a year would see me right
To,
So Hold your head up high
One day like this a year would see me right.
So if all I got every year was one day to go out and about I'd take it. More is better, don't get me wrong but to experience just one day out with the muggles is something to treasure.
Trouble is, next time I am out, that tune will be running on a loop in my head!
If you don't get one day a year, then it sounds like it would be sufficient. Like being underwater and thinking, "Just one breath would be enough!" But it wouldn't be. ;)

I'm just impressed that you heard Elbow on the jukebox!!! Great band, great song. I'll give it a full listen later today and actually pay attention to the lyrics.

While I don't recall the song "Elbows" I too have a song I associate with me.
It is by ABBA. "Take A Chance One Me".
I picked up that song back when I was a (in drab) Western Square Dance Caller.
My theme song was "Blacksmith Blues: by Ella May Morris.
I still sing the Western Square Dance version (Vocals are different because the calls to the dancers are in the vocals.)
And yes I can dance either guy or gal position, As a caller/instructor you had to know how.

Actually Elbow is the name of the group Leslie Mary, not the song, not a fan I have to admit. A song that resonates with me somewhat is a bit obscure, it is 'Fit' by Joe Jackson, mainly the first verse.

Great band, great song, from great place too - Manchester. I think the originals lines work well for us too.

The song is beautiful, there is nothing not to love about it. I can see that slight stretch to make it fit perfectly with what you are talking about Helen.
Whether we are able to express ourselves daily or once a year, one day like this a year would see me right can really resonate.
@Diane, "Fit", wow...I'm an example of having too much music in my collection to be intimately connected to all of it. Went to my iTunes library. Yep, there's "Fit" on the Beat Crazy album which isn't in my top listening Joe Jackson (that would be Night and Day followed by Rain and also the song "It's Different For Girls"). Beat Crazy is about to go on heavier rotation, not to mention my signature line has been overdue for an update, thank you!!!

Hi Sara, I'm glad you enjoyed Joe Jacksons 'Fit'. I remember buying the Beat Crazy album back in 1980 (big JJ fan). Played it and that song came round - OMG!! did he write that verse just for me??, still sends a tingle down my spine when I play it now. There are literally dozens of lines and verses in songs that spark an emotional response when I listen, my signature lines are just a few examples, but 'Fit' stands out.

Diane, you should cite the source for the lyrics you quote. It'll help those of us who pay attention to these things (which I of course do as long as we don't tread into "Man, I Feel Like A Woman" territory).
I'm not sure why but your current signature line made me think of the song "From Adam To Eve" by Nigel Kennedy (Kafka, his foray into pop). I'll take the liberty of posting the entire lyric because it is so effective...
The night above the street hung like a cloak
The black ribbons of rain began to soak
And Mary Magdalene cracked a joke
Lost among the scriptures that she wrote
Johnny Apollo before the charge
A chaos of regrets a human cage
In Georgiana Street Camden Town
The years of shame were cut away
The buses and the cabs are slowing down
That change each moment of this day
Look at me, see what I've become
Look at me, feminine
Look at me, see what I've become
Look at me, I'm feminine, feminine
He kneels above the line as if to pray
Take him to the hills above the bay
Mechanical pianos fill his head
I'm proud of being so feminine
Another year like this and he'll be dead
The snake that shed it's final skin
I'M NOT THE GIRL I WANT TO BE
I'M NOT SUPPOSED TO BE LIKE ME
THE BOY WILL NOT BECOME A MAN
APOLLO'S GOT ANOTHER PLAN
Look at me, see what I've become
Look at me, I'm feminine
Look at me, see what I've become
Look at me, I'm feminine, feminine
Look at me, touch my skin
Look at me, I'm feminine
Look at me, touch my skin
Look at me, I'm feminine, feminine, feminine,
feminine, feminine, feminine
The night above the street hangs like a cloak
Black ribbons of rain began to soak
Johnny Apollo a man no more
The years of pain were cut away
I'M NOT THE MAN I WAS BEFORE
That change each moment of this day
I'M NOT THE MAN I WAS BEFORE
The woman in your life your God your soul

Sara, they are such moving lyrics, why did I not know of this before?? Got to add that to my music list. My signature lines are by two acts who I am well known for liking, a lot, so I didn't put names to them, but blow it, I''ll do it anyway!!
I had to lose a line to make it fit....

I love all three songs. The third one is easy but the other two I couldn't place. I'm horrible at naming songs off of lyrics. Richard Blade (KROQ/Los Angeles classic 80's DJ) has opened more concerts & festivals than I can count lately and he often plays the lyric game which I usually fail miserably.
As for "From Adam To Eve", Nigel Kennedy should be pretty easy to find in the UK. Then again, there is always iTunes!
I have more that you might not be aware of. I'll have to dig them out.

I love all three songs. .
Sara, you are obviously a person of impeccable musical taste!! As you might have noticed, 'Irish Blood, English Heart' above my avatar is a Morrissey song, as I have Irish parents but was born in Manchester. And I have found the song you mentioned, beautiful...

I'm glad you found the song. For context, the female vocal is Brix Smith (The Fall) and the male chorus is one of my all time favs, Stephen Duffy. I don't recall who does the verses. Sounds as if it could be someone like Antony but I know it isn't.
Love how IB/EH fits your heritage.
