Good Afternoon All,
I am so very guilty of reading without posting, or sometimes not even logging in (lurking?) and reading through many, many threads. But I love reading through your posts and kind of going behind the curtain, so to speak, so I hope that's alright?
I thought of something fun to ask my own loving CDer and thought, for fun, I would pose the question here as well;
If you could be from another time or place, as a female, what type of woman would you be?
To clarify, I don't mean specifically (Marilyn Monroe, Trieu Thi Trinh, Joan of Ark, Mother Teresa, Queen Victoria, etc.), I know there was a thread similar to that. I mean what Era? Where in the world? What kind of woman would you be???
Have you thought of being a 60's housewife in North America? a Geisha in the 30's-40's? A Queen or a Revolutionary in Europe in the 1400's or a simple peasant girl or maid? Powerful? Submissive? Rich? Poor? I could go on and on...
All over the world and throughout the years (decades) women have set the stage for themselves, their looks, their mannerisms, their speech, (yes, I know, men had a say in these things as well at times, I am not beyond naivety), and as a female I know this is something we think about and wondered if you all do as well?
Care to share?
Thank you,
g

I would be a compassion and understanding female. I like music and writing that has come from both sides of my brain open. It gave me creative process. I would be a strong female. I am sure that many of you are very strong mentally. I would have good manners and be involved in the arts and possibly politics. But alas I am older now and hope I have grace as well.

I lived Happy Days before they even thought of the show.
Definitely lived a sixties teenage life.
But then we all got older, found new friends, got married, had children.....
Times and circumstances changed and the past was sadly left behind.
Today?
I just blend in.
I just want to be like a regular girl my age.

Good question. I would want to be feminine, consistent, with my age --62, kind and empathic. The 60's housewives look would be something to consider.

Well I would want to be able to wear stockings, garters and dresses most of the time so I guess the 60's would be a good place to start.

I would be the same person on the inside that I am today. I could not be sure that I would have the same successes professionally and financially that I have had in my male life for obvious reasons that most women can describe much better than I ever could. I would be lucky and grow into womanhood from childhood and my teen years, enjoying the ride. I would definitely be good looking because I have a lot of good features and have always looked younger than my actual age. I would dress similar to the styles that all my girlfriends and ex-wife and daughter and daughter-in-law do. I would still be outgoing, smile a lot and have a good time. I would probably be better at being present in conversations, in the moment, because most women do naturally and that is what I struggle with today, may be ADD. Hopefully, I would be able to maintain my small body and not have to fight weight issues as so many women do. In other words, I would like myself in that scenario as much as I like myself today.

I think that I'd like what I perceive to be a simpler time yet be the birth of feminism and would like to be a young adult during the 50's and 60's. I think being a flight attendant during these times would have offered a young lady a wide open world to experience as well as the best fashions, IMO.

I like today's times for the most part and love my profession as a software engineer, so I don't think I would change the timeframe at all. I know that when I was in college that very few women pursued this line of work, so it would have been interesting to be on the bleeding edge as a woman. I hope that if I had been born a girl that I would have stumbled upon my current career.

For me I would want to be from right where I am, the SE. Then about 8years older so I would get to enjoy the mid 60's as a teen. And turn out to be a lady much like my wife but older and more experienced. And like her keeping my style with the long hair! And dress more like a business oriented professional.

I'd want to be a modern woman, free to be who I want to be an equal not a subordinate 40's or 50 woman. Besides the 60s I think today's fashions are pretty cool and you can always do a little retro when in the mood.

I am not saying the world is perfect or that we have gender equality BUT its better than its ever been. Me and my SO enjoy visiting historic houses in the UK. These can be anything from esrly 1600s to the early 1900s. I can never visit one without wondering what it must have been like to sweep down the staircase in a grand dress appropriate to the age of the house. Also, I love looking at the old costumes and any paintings of the fine ladies of the time. I suppose this merely means that I'd love to wear grand dresses from any age and that I have delusions of grandeur.

Very good question. I grew up in the 80’s and all my mom’s clothes that I wore back then sucked, so the 80’s are out based solely on fashion. I think I would like to be a female in my early twenties in today’s age. Maybe attending a major college, having girl fun and oh yeah, preparing for my unknown future.

Great question! I'd be me only female...I'd be a bit of a tomboy and love to do outdoor activities, a big college football fan (Geaux Tigers!), I'd also be a fashionista that loves to shop, my wardrobe would be mostly classic feminine styles with a touch of the latest trendy styles. Lastly I'd be a loving partner to my SO not much of a housekeeper so might need a maid but one hell of a good cook.

Just a 'regular' woman, a nice office job somewhere, decent income, nice circle of friends. Quite happy in the present age with all the technology we have but in fantasy land maybe a 40s or 50s film star (love the fashions from that age)

What a great question! And it's pretty great that so many have said that they'd be mostly a female variation of who they are today. I'd answer the same, a woman version of me, in these times, able to be independent and modern, and I'd really hate not being able to go to work. I also don't think I'd want to be a mother and would probably be a lesbian...hopefully with a body like Sofia Vergara LOL

this is intriguing, first by whom has posted and second by virtue of some self discovery of personal nature...
in my youth someone may have had a hand of choosing which side i would be on, seems they made an error,
i would hope i would have been more successful, as a man i did not want to stand out, when dressed i am very much more particular in what i wear and have expensive taste, so i would need a better revenue stream. i don't think that i would of been attracted to men, i obsess over women and imagine i would prefer a demure women.
feeling i would still be in LGBT community i think that a more modern and accepting era would work for me.
i think i would be happier overall but would like to know that i had that perceived existence of fulfillment but suppose that wouldn’t be possible would it. cant have your cake and eat it too….

I am with those who would be the same person, but in a female version. As a child of the 60s, I have always admired my female peers, and I am old enough to appreciate the hard won rights women have today, and the sacrifices they made to get them. I would have taken the courage it takes to be "out" as Trans, and channeled it into pushing for equality for all.

Tough question, lots of contradictions for me. I guess I would want to be the girl next door, child of the 60s or 70s; a wife and a mom, I would also want to have a career. This is already sounding complicated. Thanks Brenda PS. Having is not always as nice as wanting.
I like to think that I'm like Kara Danvers aka Supergirl. Feminine and classy, but independent and fierce. A woman who is quiet at times but still doesn't take shit from anyone. She's just a strong, independent and successful woman and that's what I want to be.

An interesting thread, Littleg2; I am Always wary of wishes; You might ask the genie for great wealth, and wake up the next day, super rich, but with no arms and covered in boils. Recent circumstances have put me in the position of care giver to my wife, and I must admit, sometimes I feel a little guilty that I seem to be so suited to it. So I guess I would end up being myself, but with a body that more supported my efforts at being a good housewife and nurturer. I enjoyed being a father, so I think I would enjoy being a mother as well. Anyway, wishes aside I think I'll just try to do the best I can with what I've been given.
This is a very interesting question.
I think back about the 50 and 60's when society seemed more respectful to each other. Women many times were treated with respect and of course the fashions. How to be relegated to housewife or certain jobs had to be frustrating.
I would have to pick the current era. The main reason is more opportunities. Although I would like a job where I could dress nicely.

Seeing that today is probably the best time in history to be a woman, I'll have to choose another place. I'd like to be a teenager in perhaps Korea or Japan, in the entertainment industry. Assuming that I would have a good enough voice to be at least second vocal in a group, that would be fine. If I wasn't going to have the talent to sing, the perhaps sports if I were talented enough in that area. If I wasn't blessed with some type of exceptional talent or skill, and was simply smart, then maybe in some western european country where I could pursue a career in medicine. And last but not least, if I were simply a talentless hack, and of only average intellgence, I'd like to be an airline attendant with one of the major international airlines, at least I'd get to travel a bit.
And assuming I was still 'me' personality wise, I'd wind up as a gay female, so I'd probably stick to one of the larger urban cities to live in, and search for a mate.
And, as a guy, I've learned that even an average figure woman can make herself very attractive, I'd be happy enough being a woman of just normal height, and normal weight. And I mean normal, not average, because today, average is obese.

I would like to be a business executive who could afford a personal stylist. Be able to focus on an interesting and challenging career, but also have someone provide me with fabulous clothes to choose from. Of course, having a family and balancing against career would also be important. I’m guessing that many cis-women have the same aspirations.

I'm a woman of today. I would never live in an era where women were considered, in any way, inferior to men. I want it all. I want to be strong, capable, intelligent and witty. And when I want to be that way, beautiful, sexy, and ultra-feminine. A girl can dream, can't she?

I would be from the mid-to-late 1800s a woman like Calamity Jane. One that could drive a team of horses and load and unload wagons and whatever shoot my guns. But when I wanted to be a lady I could wear a saloon dress and look gorgeous. Can be rough and tough and feminine when I want to be. Sort of like it is today in my life. I never was one to be big and fancy. Or put all of my eggs just in one basket.

great question A better one might be "what kind of person would you be" Hopefully regardless of gender I would be kind, compassionate, and of course beautiful, at least as a woman, As far as would time period, now seems pretty good. Looking at types of dress, the 20's flappers are good, The 60's Donna Reed look has always drawn me, nice dress and heels. BUt knowing me I would have been burning my bra in the 60's.

Good Afternoon All,
I am so very guilty of reading without posting, or sometimes not even logging in (lurking?) and reading through many, many threads. But I love reading through your posts and kind of going behind the curtain, so to speak, so I hope that's alright?
I lurked this forum for years and still read without signing in. Don`t worry about it.
I thought of something fun to ask my own loving CDer and thought, for fun, I would pose the question here as well;
If you could be from another time or place, as a female, what type of woman would you be? ...
I don`t think I want to change much. If a name is required, maybe someone like Ursula Franklin, a recently deceased University of Toronto metallurgy professor. While this lady may be an obscure figure to most, she did a lot for the engineering community and showing us the consequences of new technology, among other things.
There is a wikipedia page on Dr. Franklin easily found by an internet search engine.

I'd be a woman of today, choosing to reinvent herself when the feeling comes. I would still be athletic, creative, frugal, stubborn, and sometimes funny. A lover of poetry, dance and music would still describe me. But I would experiment with my appearance, using cosmetics, clothes, hair styles and fragrance to show many sides of my interests and personality. I would try to stretch any boundaries society puts on women and encourage men to shift gears and explore outside society's designated lane.
I would have trouble with sexist men. I would hope to be more vocal since I've been guilty of locker room talk silence. I would still check out other women's styles. I would hope to have a group of girlfriends. A "Girls Night" would be a ton of fun!

Fantastic question, I initially saw the 60s housewife in north America and thought that would be perfect, but as a child of the 80s I think maybe a big shoulder pad equipped, power dressing business woman with even bigger hair, think 1988s Working Girl, but not with the aggressive nature of Katharine Parker, more submissive, oh I have a new fantasy :battingeyelashes:
Superb question!

Realizing that my previous answer was rather complicated, perhaps I simply should have written:
What kind of woman would I be?
A pretty one. Beautiful women make the world a nicer, better place to live in. Men like to look at them, and so do other women.
Beauty is it's own reward. Sure, it takes some time and work, but the end result is certainly worth it.
As a guy, when I spend time dressing up in good clothes, I feel better. And I suppose women feel better when they know they look real good, too.

Great question, Littleg.
I had to think about this one. On the one hand, I know that I'd be delighted to be the woman I describe in my profile; the eccentric aunt that scandalizes the rest of the family. For that to work, I'd have to be born in the early to mid 1950's, or right at the turn of the 20th Century (1900). Young women born of those era's forced some serious changes on the Western world.
On the other hand, a much more primitive time attracts me. A time when had very well defined, but altogether vital roles in their societies. Far from subservient, they were revered for the things that only they could do - give life and nurture children. Go back far enough and those societies lose their patriarchal dominance. That is a culture so foreign to anything in the modern age that it intrigues me.

since i don't believe in children/procreating, fantasies of child bearing is moronic.
to any who would achieve less than as their male outcome, would be a neanderthal who has zero belief in equality.
finding one's potential is everyone's quest.
i have no idea what the OP woman wants or expects, maybe you face the inequality of world as it is now. i definitely believe in activism to create a just society.
p.s. i'm an intellectual snob and a bit of a bully, which is what some of my employers expects from me. i would be very much less successful if i played the "second class" timid woman. women are capable of being mental equals, and i won't buy into the stereotyping that only perpetuates the neanderthals.

Part one of this question would be to simply live my whole life born as a female. Between my family and what I have done as a person and a professional, I think that this would have been a great "ride" to experience.
Part two would be a fantasy of entering a time machine to go back as a women to witness or participate during momentous times in the history of the last 150 years. I guess this is why I love historical fiction and movies with lots of period dressing and costumes.

I love the 50's style house wife dress. But I'd still want to be around now. I would want to be a bit wild but without the bad stigma that that life style would have back in the 50s.

If I had to be a woman it would be now or in the future. The way society has treated women over the years has been appalling and there are still problems. The problems are not just with patronising or abusive men, but with the horrible treatment by other women if you do not conform to their expectations of what a woman should be. You also have a lifetime of magazines telling you that you are full of flaws. I would want to have the sort of life I have now, with status in my profession, great friends and colleagues, but wearing nicer clothes to work. No need to fantasise as I already have all these things apart from wearing the clothes to work - but I can wear them the rest of the time. Though I envy how women look compared with men, as a man I get to enjoy this in a relationship - the idea of being a woman attracted to a man fills me with horror. So all I would really like to have is their wardrobe - and I do.
