I’m wondering if anyone else has had this experience regarding hairstyles? For so many, many years, I have always been dissatisfied with the haircuts I have received. I work unfortunately in a very traditional setting, which limits how expressive I can be. So it’s mostly just another traditional male haircut for me, time after time.

Today, I went in to get yet another uninspiring haircut, but this time I came out just a little bit and asked the stylist for “a cute, feminine style haircut, something that can fit in traditional male mode, but also can be teased into something more daring, like a little bit of a pixie mixed with a wedge.” I had a few pictures that illustrated the look I was seeking, which helped immensely.

I was nervous as to what she would say, and she said, “I can do that, but are you sure that’s what you want?” I told her that yes, I am certain that’s what I want. When she finished I can’t describe the joy I felt when I saw the cute pixie smiling back at me!

As much as I love my new style and the “rightness” of it, I think I enjoyed the explanation to her through the course of her styling as to why it was so special and important to me to finally have a look that was “me.”

She was very interested to know many things about this subject, and was genuinely supportive and encouraging. I was very surprised to find that she knew almost nothing about our community, and I viewed it as wonderful opportunity to help her understand things, at least from one person’s perspective and journey.

We both agreed that we had each received something special today, and I took yet another step in the journey that we all in our wonderful community are taking together.

How freeing and amazingly right it was to finally and simply say, “I want a feminine haircut.” Five powerful words.

p.s. I’d love to post pics, but I’m still too chicken. Someday though...

Brooke, I have long hair and get it trimmed every two months. They know I am feminine as I went there dressed a few times.

Brooke -- Great job! It took some bravery to stand up for yourself and it sounds like it paid off. I hope you love the haircut and you love yourself in it. If you are happy with your look, it shines through the rest of your life and people can't help but notice that whatever is going on, it seems to be working for you. ;)

Really enjoyed reading about your experience Brooke.

So pleased to hear it was a special moment for you.

Here's to you making many more in the future.

With regards to pics take your time, you will know when the time is right and all I can say is this is a fairly safe place to post (using the members only pics and videos section).

Dammit Brooke! You couldn’t post a pic? I’ve been contemplating this for a while( when my cding was at its height and was going to tell my hair stylist about Joss if I had to. I chickened out and that was that. If you’re brave enough send me before and after pics. You’ve reignited my interest. Good on you for going for it.

AAAAAggggghhhhh!!!!!! thanks Mykell another picture I'll never be able to un-see.Brooke although my hair is longer than yours I have my stylist change my style every time I go in, nothing drastic just a different part and maybe more curl and wave, she keeps it so I can go male(mainly pony tail)or down but still a hint of femininity. My biggest change was going from totally grey and mousey to full color, didn't have to explain, it was obvious what I had done.

On my last trip to Seattle I asked for a feminine haircut and they said, come in dressed first.

So I did. :-)

While I'm not as bald as Mykell, I'm not far behind. I've had a fem hair cut back in the early 70s.

Jocelyn,

OMG, girl.
You are absolutely cute and adorable. Your eyes are killer, and go so well with the wistful smile.

What a great story Brooke! I’ve had a similar experience with my stylist over the past year. I’ve asked her to give me a feminine style while I grow my hair out. She never bats an eye, and she’s done a great job (at least with what she has to work with ;)

And, wow Jocelyn, you rock that look!

Oh!...I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for the kind words and encouragement. I spent a very enjoyable evening playing around with different products and styling techniques and was so, so pleased with the different looks I can conjure up.

You will laugh, because doing so started to bring on the first signs of pink fog, thinking this outfit will go great with this style, and this style just begs for that outfit and so on and so on...so I had to call it a night before things got out of hand!

Now all that hair is tamed down in boring mode at work and of course only the females here have noticed.

And I’m in agreement with the others - Joss!...omg!...I’m so happy for you...and slightly envious! Never, ever, even on my best day in my 20’s!. Enjoy it girl, because you’ve certainly got it!

Nice story! It's funny how some folk have no idea about us. My wife and I went to dinner one night and the waitress was young and so curious she just sat down and asked! Of course see did it politely asking if it was ok to ask. What a great night that was! I think her boyfriend heard about this and I would be curious if he found out about our world when she got home. :)

I always have a picture of Catherine Herridge on my phone so I could show the stylist. At first it was just for length and part, but last time I let her do it more pixie-ish. Not much to work with and it is very fine, but it did turn out OK.

I have always had short hair. Every time I try to let it grow my wife tells me t get a haircut. She does not like a shaggy cut, which I find strange. When we met I had fairly long hair, which was the style at the time. I was not a dresser then. I blew my chance.
