It's summer and softball season, and for the third year in a row I am getting to be a cheerleader for a women's softball team!
My city's Parks and Recreation department hosts an amateur women's softball league, and there is a lesbian team that plays in the league who have adopted me as their official cheerleader. I started attending their games two years ago, and almost as a joke by the third game I attended wearing a cheerleader outfit, and cheered for my team. The ladies loved it, and not just on my team. The other teams all got to know me too and complemented me on how great I look in my cheerleader outfit, and how much they like me being there. My team even had me pose with them in their annual team photos. My team also won their league championship the last two years, and credited part of their victory to my enthusiastic support.
This year I wasn't sure if I was going to do it again. I had a time conflict for Thursdays, when the team plays, because I was practicing archery with another group on those evenings. I also had put on some weight, and the costume wasn't fitting that well, or so I felt. But when the season started this year, two of the team members reached out to me, and said they missed me and hoped I would do it again! So I attended their 3rd game this last Thursday, got the usual warm welcome and lots of complements on how great I looked, and I will be their cheerleader again at all the rest of their games this season. They had lost their last two games, but with me cheering for them, they won! I told the other group I was doing archery with on Thursdays that they would have to do without me on Thursdays for the next two months. I can still do archery with them on Saturday mornings.
Only one problem. My team changed their name and team colors this year, due to a sponsor change. So I need a new uniform. My purple uniform from the last two years doesn't match their new lime-green shirts. And a new green cheerleader uniform would have to come from a collegiate cheer uniform supplier, at a cost for $70 or more. The less expensive ($20 or so) uniform I already have doesn't come in green. Talked it over with the team coach, and came up with a more affordable solution. She will give me one of the same t-shirts the team wears, with a number on the back and everything, and I will get the word 'Cheerleader' added to the back of my shirt, above my number. I may also alter my shirt to be more like a sleeveless cheer uniform top. I'll wear that top with a green skirt as my new uniform.
Picture is of my uniform last year. I'll add a pic of my new uniform as soon as I get it put together.
