Couple days ago my wife and I were looking at some video clips of parties where teens were dancing. They were from back in the mid to late 50s and a few in the early 60s. Most of the girls had on dresses with petticoats under them. These were not professional dancers as in Grease. Anyway the clothes were interesting and we started talking about what the girls were wearing. I asked my wife if she had worn petticoats. She had but when she was very young or with a formal.
She then asked me if I had since she is younger by some years than I am. She knows my history and I said yes as they were popular while I was in my teens. We got to talking about them and the clothes girls wore. Which led to details about clothes and what was under them. Dresses were pretty obvious. Often cotton which meant washing and ironing. Most everyone wore white bras and slips. The interesting thing for her was my telling her about wearing petticoats. I explained that you needed more than one petticoat to hold the dress' skirt out. The only ones I had were half slips. So I could wear a couple or so. I also told her that you often found them scratchy so you wore a regular half slip under them. She asked how did you drive with them on. I told her you pushed them under the steering wheel or folded them the best you could.
She had forgotten when we brought all my fem clothes home from my mothers that the petticoats were in the one box. I donated them to a local high school for their play. If they do Grease I'll get to see them again.
