We had our trip meeting last night for an upcoming group trip to Fiji to do some scuba diving. One of the things the group leader went over was a ceremony that the islanders perform called the Kava ceremony (a drink made from a local root that has some mild euphoric properties). One of the things he noted was that it is customary for men and women to cover their legs at the ceremony, and that the men are encouraged to wear a long skirt (his words...it's actually a sarong). Woo-Hoo!
One of the guys in the group was really stressed out over this...he asked if it's mandatory....not really, but it's considered rude and offensive to show exposed legs there, and all the men there wear sarongs. His comment was "I aint wearing no skirt". This guy is the type that doesn't really care who he offends, so I'm sure he will not comply. He was so worried about having to wear a "skirt", that he never even though that he could wear pants. Duh!
Me?, I'll be buying a sarong the first day there and enjoying the freedom to dress how I'm most comfortable for two weeks...I normally don't venture out dressed, other that a few things that are not obvious. Too bad it's not customary for men to wear a one-piece racerback swimming suit there. lol

Prettytoes, I was in Fiji in May/June for my honeymoon and snuck in some diving. I was at Tokoriki, The Kava ceremony I went to did not require legs to be covered. I could live without ever having Kava again. The Fijian men did wear sarongs.

Prettytoes, I guess you can expect some jerks to say that instead of just going along. I know it is an added bonus for you to be wearing a skirt, go enjoy it and you may want to wear it the whole trip. I think I would.

With ceremonies such as this you just go with the flow, it is a tourist exercise and the rules are not as stringent as they seem.

Same with the Hungi and welcoming ceremonies in New Zealand they cater for tourists and their lack of participation.

I always get chosen for the welcoming ceremony in NZ as most tourists are apprehensive and it is nice to see a ceremony go without a hitch.

Mind you some of those Maoris do look fearsome.

A friend of mine traveled all over the S. Pacific for years in his boat. He really got into Kava. Tasted like mud to me! There were no sarongs involved in the "ceremonies" he attended on the islands. Just Kava parties at some guy's house where all the men got stoned!:heehee:

U mite consider picking up a couple of sarongs like I did in Bali, Pretty. They r versatile. And, depending on how u tie them, they can look great!:D

I will be buying one or two there, and I will likely wear them the whole trip. I love to have fun, and I will have a blast wearing a skirt for 2 weeks! Bright and colorful is what I will seek out for my sarongs.
