Last night was my first trip to H. Mary's in Long Beach, CA. I was wonderful! The only negative, to me, was the immense volume of the DJ's music and talking. It was deafening!..ever been close to a jet engine without hearing protection?

I met and sat with KatrinaK and Micki_Finn and their supportive wives.. my first time to meet Micki (she's a beauty!). After about 45 minutes, we moved outside for some QUIET time, drinks, and a lot of chatting. I sat next to Katrina's wife (I'll not name her for privacy's sake). She's a marvelous person and became my friend almost instantly.

Micki's wife was a bowl full of laughter and joy, a real pleasure to meet. Later in the evening came Doc Sherry and friend, Cindi, both recently back from a major Far East trip. Introductions were made all around, and forum names became real people. I met many other girls but don't recall names. It was truly a T-Girls' night, and one that I will never forget!

Sorry, in all of the activity, I don't believe any photos were taken, but I'll ask. TTFN

Yes, the music is loud isn't it.

Otherwise, it is a great venue.

I would love to go to a place like that someday. I'm glad you had such a good time.

I don't understand why DJs (and bands) think the louder the music, the better. I have left places and not gone to other places because of this. Much of the younger generation will be deaf when they get older because of this.

Other than that, I'm glad you had a good time. I wish I could find a CD friendly place to go (without the super loud music).

I can not understand the reasoning behind the idea that you must deafen the whole world with your music. I am now almost completely deaf because I worked in industry that did not understand the perils of loud noise, and there were no laws demanding the use of safety equipment. So I now need heaing aids to go about my daily routine. I used to enjoy going out to such places and concerts but I no longer do that because I can hear them from my house forty mile away. (OK slight exaggeration I know) But the point is made. I have a friend who still goes to these places and she wears era-plugs and at one, the ear-plugs were still not enough and she was deaf for certain frequencies for over a month.

So beware of high volume music as it will hurt you in the future.

Wise words indeed.

I wish someone would explain to me why the people who produce or control music play it so loud that the people who go to hear it have to wear ear plugs. Just explain to me how this makes sense.

Jenny,

I keep realizing that I should post/reply more often on here regarding my adventures about the state of California to the various Renaissance and Pirate Festivals. Especially when I intend to let my female self out to play in public. I was in Long Beach this summer for a couple of days. Had I, we might have been able to get together for an evening meal. Maybe next time. Glad you and the others had fun.

It doesn't make sense at all. It makes money! Young people today do not understand the damage that they are doing to them selves. But as they grow older they will start to wonder why it is hard to understand the person next to them. They will all be in hearing aids by the time they are forty.

I would love to see someone start a restaurant with carpets, drapes & acoustic ceilings. I think they'd make a fortune. I'm sick of going some place where I have to shout to carry on a conversation. There is always music or a TV playing much too loud & hard surfaces that turn that into a jangle of noise. When I first started playing music professionally the only one amplified at all was the vocalist. No one ever had a problem hearing me and people were actually having polite conversations without having to shout. I detest noise emporiums and I don't like DJ's either. They have confused playing records with actually creating music and are hired by people who are too ignorant to know the difference.

I agree, many restaurants are too loud. Perhaps there's a consultant that says this is good for one reason or another. I have asked for the music to be turned down at some restaurants and I just avoid others that are too noisy.

Jen,

That is fabulous. What a great experience.
First, ..... love Hamburger Mary's. We have a good one in Denver, and it isn't quite so loud with the DJ music. The shows are always hilarious, entertaining and divine.
I've had the pleasure of meeting forum sisters out at HMary's too, and it made the evening even more special. It is a most interesting experience to turn a Forum name and photo into a real face and person. (and in today's Weird World it isn't always "safe" to meet up with a stranger off the internet. Glad it all came together.)

You hit the motherlode in forum "stars". So many in one location. It certainly screamed "group photo" !
Thanks for sharing the fun.
