My poor abused synthetic wig is getting some nice little rats nests. What's the solution? It wasn't so expensive that I couldn't replace it but I love it so- my first hair!

I think they have oils to be used in synthetic wigs ... at least I got some with my purchases.

If you haven't done so already, you need to detangle it (gently).

Don't use a comb for the first pass, use a wig pick (you can find picks for regular hair at the drug store and they work fine), or your fingers. I prefer the latter, since I have a better feel for how matted the wig is. If need be, hold the hair above the spot you're detangling so it doesn't pull out of the wig.

Once you've gotten rid of the everything you can do by hand or pick, then go back over it with a brush (be sure to use a wig brush, since regular brushes will damage the wig). Like human hair, you should brush the wig as little as possible, since doing so can inevitably causes minor damage that you don't see but which adds up. (As guys, our hair is short enough that we rarely encounter, but over-frequent brushing can cause frizzies and split ends for women.)

I'd also get a wig detangler, which is supposed to prevent problems.

What do you mean, "our hair is short enough'? Check my avatar, that ain't no wig!
I don't mean to boast, but at 53 no significant signs of male pattern baldness. ( I do get a few funny looks in the locker room at the pool where I swim for exercise, but they're just jealous (at least, I want to think so)):)

Have you washed it recently, or ever? Use Woolite, just follow the directions, and after it dries brush it out gently as Marlena says, and try rubbing it with one of those fabric softener sheets if it gets frizzy.

I used to wear a wig before I grew my own hair long.

I used to wash it in baby shampoo and it always came out looking fine.

DON'T PUT IT IN THE DRYER!

DON'T HANG IT OUT ON THE LINE (Unless you want some local wildlife to nest in it)
