When I was young I was always looking at the lingerie ads, thinking how much more fun it was to be a Girl !

I was always scared I would be caught looking at the nighties and slips or damage the pages somehow and arose suspicion.

So my question is did you enjoy them also and do you still enjoy them Today ? I find if I look at them before i know it I am in a cute babydoll or Slip. so silly I know!

There are literally 100s of these items sold on Ebay everyday, I wonder who is buying them and wearing them ?

Our family received all the major mail order catalogs up until they were phased out. Yes, I did enjoy looking at the lingerie pages. Ladies silky underthings, swimsuits, etc. so much more interesting (and dream inducing) than boring male clothing.

To this day, I prefer print media, such as catalogs and magazines, to online reading. Yup, the internet is convenient, just not the same to me.

JC Penney and Sears catalogs were always around our house. That is how I learned so much about lingerie. I spent hours and hours studying the descriptions of the styles, construction, and size charts. By age 12 I knew how to properly measure myself for a bra.

probably where my first interest in cding came from. That type of lingerie has certainly gone out of style but many of us no doubt still where it. I love the price shown.

I too prefer print media. I saved a small collection of VS mail catalogs before they went out of print. I kind of wish I would have saved a couple of the old catalogs as well. So thanks Robbie for posting those pics. That brings back some fond memories.

As others have mentioned, in our house it was Penney's and Sears. I'd spend hours looking through the women's clothes.

I remember thumbing through those Sears, Pennys and Wards catalogs going way back. Some of my earliest memories (5,6 years old) have me selecting some of my favorite hose, slips, bras, and girdles, especially those old lace up girdles. I dreamed about those even in my teen years. Not sure why I was so fascinated by them, but I thought they were great. I suppose a part of it all was how great the models looked wearing all of these wonderful treasures. Those catalogs are basically a thing of the past now, but who would have ever guessed I’d still be looking at, or even shopping for women’s clothing (internet shopping these days). Your pics do bring back a lot of memories though. All that lace, color varieties, etc. They just have that cool retro look to them. Gee, thanks for the memories! -Meg

Most definitely! Even after I moved out, I used to get a JC Penney catalog into the 1990s. My first pair of high heels came from them. Still have them. They would also send out a lingerie only flyer from time to time. Those were great too. Used to get a Fredericks of Hollywood catalog in the 90s.

Oh yes, they were so much fun, and educational to look through. I was attracted to an OBG with six garters, in the Sears catalog, wishing I could get one. While rummaging through my Mom’s lingerie drawer...guess what? ..she had one. My hands trembled as I put it on along with her nylons. To this day, I look through many catalogs, including Victoria Secret. I only buy nylons from them, but dream on. Who buys on eBay? lol...three guesses. I think we’re the ones keeping the girdle, nylon stockings, slip, etc. manufacturing companies in business..yes, your pictures bring back many fond memories. Thanks.

Yes count me in the group. But it's kinda like we are dating our selves. Anyone under 50 or so has no idea the fascination those catalogs held. It's really a shame they stopped making those under garments. I guess that is what happens in the feminist revolution. Sure wish someone would bring them back. Hugs Faith

Christmas wasn't Christmas until the Sears Christmas catalogue arrived.
My concern was that those thick catalogues began to show wear in certain sections. My fear was that if you held it a certain way and allowed the catalogue to open "naturally ", it would open up to the beginning of the lingerie section lol. And if you looked at the right spot you'd notice the edges of the pages appeared more worn than the rest. :battingeyelashes:

We got them too. I remember getting an indefinable feeling of fascination when i was in the lingerie pages. But another feeling told me i shouldn't linger too long there, lest someone accuse me of some sort of wrongdoing. This was LONG before I had any crossdressing urges, but I felt my violently homophobic father was sensitive to any sign of gender crimes.

GUILTY, that's right. Penney's & Sears catalogs; it's there fault we are CD's. Looking at the ad's in Robbiegirl's post and the hormones flowing in a young man, who wouldn't want to be them or try the lingerie on. How unfair they were marketed just for women.

As a child my grandparents would watch me in the morning before school and after school until my parents got off from work.
I remember looking through their Sears and JC Penney's catalogs pretending to be looking at all the toys, and if they weren't in the same room I would look through the lingerie section. Little did I know I would want to wear it later in life.

By the time I was nine, I knew my measurements and my size in everything Sears, Penneys, and Wards sold. The catalogs taught me how to figure it out. When Halloween rolled around, I knew what size to ask for. And I received complete outfits in my size. It helped that I had an aunt nearly my age and my size. I paid more attention to the outerwear than the lingerie because the outerwear was pretty and had lots of variety.

I can’t desrcribe the torture of the Sears and JCPenney catalogs when I was a kid.... torn between lusting over the toy pages or lusting over the lingerie pages! Eventually, the lingerie won out... Transformers and He-Man couldn’t compete with a beautiful woman in a shiny, red satin bustier and thigh high stockings...

Those catalogs may have wet my appetite, but when I discovered the Fredrick’s of Hollywood catalogs is when I began wanting to wear the clothes instead of just looking at them...

I too loved the catalogues. There were many advertisements also in women's magazines. If you ever go to paper collectible shows you'll find sellers of ads of all sorts from the major magazines of the day. I don't know why women have abandoned the lingerie shown in catalogues and magazine ads. The clothing was very sensual. Those gowns and slips shown in the ops post are gorgeous. My wife and I spent a lot of Saturday's in midtown Manhattan lingerie shopping for her; Gimbel's, Macy's On Herald Square, Bloomingdale's, Saks Fifth Avenue, Lord & Taylor, et al.

I have to agree with TraciiG (#17) concerning girdles. There were two women's clothing stores on Broadway in Astoria, Queens that had large window displays. I love looking at the mannequins donning girdles of all kinds. One of the stores was right by a bus stop. Although I had no need to take the bus there were many times I stood there waiting for it to come.

I still have a few Sears catalogues, great to reminisce.

These days printing techniques have improved and better colour catalogues are produced.

I still look at the summer ones in particular, most would have been banned thirty years ago for showing too much detail.

They would not have even got into Playboy years ago. :-)

How times have changed.

I've actually posted about this before. My mom ran a pretty tight ship when I was growing up. The lingerie sections of the Sears and Penney's catalogs of that era were about all there was around my house of interest to a boy that age. I soon realized however that I was equally fascinated by what the models were wearing as I was with the models themselves and the rest is history so to speak.

I was a devotee of all the major catalogs and spent many an hour studying the lingerie pages trying to imagine how each item would feel if I were to wear it. When I discovered the wonderful world of Hugh Hefner's Playboy Magazine, I was mesmerized by the women, certainly, but I was also struck by the fact that they wore lingerie that was definitely not bought at Sears, or Penneys, or Montgomery Wards. Where oh where did they find such finery? Fast forward -- today you can find it everywhere.

Pretty sure that straight, non-crossdresser, pre and teen males were pouring over the same images, although not necessarily for the same reasons.

And, based on this writing gay males did too (just a different section): http://knappy-head.com/2010/03/11/they-made-me-a-homosexual-mail-order-catalogs/comment-page-1/

I grew up on a farm in the mid-west during the 1940’s and 1950’s. I didn’t have any sisters or girl cousins. But what I did have were the Sears and J C Penney catalogs. They were always around and I studied them (the girl section) very intensely. I knew more about women’s clothes, the sizing, and how to wear them, than I knew about farming.

As soon as I could, I put that knowledge to use and have been wearing them ever since.

Lacey New I had that same fantasy ! I actually worked retail for about 3 years and would joke with the other lady managers about having a bet where the loser had to take the place of the manikins for a day. The ladies were always up for it and made sure to let me know I would be modeling foundations, slips and dresses all day if I lost ! I was too chicken to take the bet

Both the Sears and JCPenneys Christmas Catalogs were even better than the "usual" ones. The women's clothing in them was more "festive" as opposed to being more practical. And the special section of "frilly things" couldn't be beat. :)

Rhonda Darling - Yup..love all the catalogs...then when I was able to get Fredericks of Hollywood and VS catalogs, I would be mesmerized by the lingerie and dresses. I would order Fredericks of Hollywood grab bag sales where you would items of one size for a super low price. Too funny! Yes, I think I was jumping all over the Sunday paper ads for a few different reasons than all of my brothers.
And I could just hear my parents asking themselves: Why is the underwear section of the Sear's catalog all dog-eared and some pages missing?
It's amazing to think back then, what was "available" and what you did to try and feed the cravings?
Anyone remember trying to "unscramble" the scrambled pay stations hoping for a few sections of clear view?
Then a little later, when the boutique-stores starting having their own women's clothing catalogs...it was like heaven!!
But I had to wait for my Mom to finish reading it first.

I remember of the 3; Sears, Wards, and JcPenney, JcPenney had the better selection of lingerie at the time. many of their dresses were more attractive too. I only wish I could order stockings in the variety of colors that I remember in those catalogs. They would have been the sheer stretch kind in that time period. Much more forgiving and easier to wear than full fashion stockings. Cheaper too! That would have been late 70s and early 80s. There seemed to be a time when they had some really attractive items ......then in later years it seemed like they just had "everyday" underwear.

My family purchased a lot of merchandise from those companies. Too bad those companies are now all but dust and a memory.

There's a particular girdle/panty briefer that Sears had, which is firm control, with a zipper going up the front with a hook and eye crotch . I've had one since the seventies, other than for a brief (bad pun, there) time when they no longer carried them and when I again found it on ebay. There are occasionally other things that show up, which my sister wore back in the day, that feel nice to wear, too.

We didn't have jc penney, but we did have the sears catalogue. Browsing the catalogue as a kid, when there were people around I would just look at the toy section (star wars, Atari video games). When no one was around, I would flip to the women's section, and stare lovingly at the gorgeous clothing. My favourite was the undergarments like the panties/shapewear/slips (especially full). And so a certain extent, the swimwear section. I guess that would explain my collection of women's swimsuits now.

Yes, I enjoyed them but not in a "i get to see girls in skivvies" kind of way. I was already exposed to penthouse by then so there were easier ways to get my kicks.

I was just thinking about this again and I remembered something.

We always got to pick our Christmas presents out of the special Christmas catalog that was half toys.

I remember there was a page with a few costumes. For the boys there was an astronaut costume and for the girls there was a ballerina tutu.

I might have been only 5 or 6 ( I don't remember my exact age, but I was prepubescent) but I wanted that tutu more than anything in the world. Every chance I got, I would grab the catalog turn right to that page and dream about wearing that tutu.

Me too! I would check out the Christmas editions looking for toys, and would happen across the lingerie. Then I started checking out the lingerie!

Then I started to have dreams about lingerie. The first one, I was looking though the catalog and saw 3 men wearing T-shirts and half slips! I don't know
how long I looked for that before realizing it was a dream! Then I began to have dreams of being in public in my underwear, which of course was a pretty lacy full slip!

When I was quite young I remember going to a local department store and in one section there was a big sign that said, "Lingerie". I didn't know what it was or even how to pronounce it, but the word had my curiosity. Little did I know it would become an exciting place to go.

I loved all the old catalogues. They introduced me to all the wonderful items that were worn underneath a dress or skirt. My first feelings were that I wanted to wear them all.

Dena, we share similar dreams but mine was based on experince. When I was about 12 I heard our Young Hispanic maid laughing loudly to a Movie she was watching on TV. After a few mins of watching I saw a young man shaving his face looking in the mirror wearing a wife beater Tshirt. It then cut to a young women in her apartment with an evil Grin. She snapped her fingers and then burst out laughing. They then cut back to the young man who was toweling of his face but when he looked back into the mirror he was wearing a lacy full slip ! They then gave us a full view and he was in nylons and heels as well. He was not happy but my maid thought this was historical. When it went to commercial she was still laughing and grabbed one of her white full slips and chased me around trying to get me to try it on. Crazy ! I have tried to find what that movie was but have had no luck

Robbie, we never had the Sears, or JCPenney catalogueso here in the UK, but I well remember Freemans, Littlewoods and Grattans, all three regularly seen at home.
I also remember looking at the girls clothing section, although not certain that the underwear pages were my priority.
Although we did look at the toys around Christmas, actually visiting our local Co-operative society had a huge toy shop where you could see and touch the real thing.
Aah, Nostalgia hey, not what it used to be.

301359301360 corsets were just out of my age groupe as were the rubber girdles by playtex. for ever curious what it must feel like ot be squeezed into such a form, the idea of adding a corset's tightened shoe laces and a knot that's had to reach on top of a long line bra and girdle ! WOW

I remember the catalog days fondly. I think that planted the crossdressing seed in me. If Mother had known she would have hid them from me. My favorite thread so far

Those catalogs were a fix for me when I was a kid. I was always drawn to the women's section. I would try to hide that I was looking at womens clothes and lingerie. When someone would come into the room I would quick flip over to another section. I remember my mom telling me to pick out new school clothes. I hated that. It was something I hated and couldn't figure out why. I would rather look at the girl and womens clothing. It took to later in life to figure out why. I look back on the old photos of lingerie and wish I could get my hands on a lot of it.

Oh yes, perusing through the JCP and Sears catalogs, especially looking through the lingerie section, choosing in my mind which bras I wanted to wear.
I was pretending to be looking at the "boy stuff" but I think my family had their suspicions.
When the Sears stores where I live closed, I did manage to get a nice collection of Exquisite Form bras and Simply Emma jeggings.

I was about ten, (give or take) and they had a Prince Valiant costume in one of the catalogs. My father got really mad at me when I asked him if I could have one. He said in a very loud voice "no son of mine is going to wear a dress!" I've always wondered if they ever sold any.

Robin777 - I hear ya. They don't make lingerie like they used to.
Amy - love the photo - I too would be all smiles if I got to wear bras and panties like that all day. :)

I was reminded by another member that there were also pretty Bridesmaids dresses and Gowns in these Catalogs.

Girls had all the fun but hey since many ladies kept these dresses forever some of us at least got to model some of them for fun ! LOL
