View Full Version : 👉🏼 What's Your Crossdressing level? 👠
Patience

What's your level of crossdressing? Just curious to hear what others say. I'd say I'm a level 4, with no interest in taking it further.
LEVEL 1: Just wears panties. No other fem clothing or make-up.
LEVEL 2: Panties and other fem clothing like skirts, pantyhose. lingerie. No make-up.
LEVEL 3: All fem clothing. Shaving various areas. Wearing make-up and wigs.
LEVEL 4: Same as 3, in addition to using of breast forms and/ or hip pads.
LEVEL 5:Same as 4, plus tucking.
LEVEL 6: Either 4 or 5, plus some kind of femininity-enhancing supplement.
LEVEL 7: No longer applies. Option eliminated.
Thanks for your replies!

P.

I have an hourglass figure so I don't need forms or hip pads! My hair is about a foot long, so I need to wear a ponytail in windy weather. I easily pass as female on the phone.
I'll put on lip gloss and nail polish. I'll wear florals and heeled shoes to work.

5 plus...
I have experimented with self medicating hormones but decided it was not a good idea. Thinking about seeing a doctor and doing it right. Still on the fence about it.

I am with you at Level 4. I have tried tucking, but it is not that "big" of an issue. I don't know if that makes me a Level 5 or not. I suppose if I was a lot thinner, tucking my be more important. I have thought of moving to Level 6 but I don't see that happening any time soon.

Level 4 for me. I’ve tried tucking, but I don’t seem to get it right. Doesn’t matter, though. If I am wearing something that is tight enough to be revealing, I have a decent gaff that my wife bought for me. It works.

I would take exception with 6 and 7. That’s trans, not crossdressing, and you’ve (possibly) unintentionally created a hierarchy among the community. Trans people are NOT “advanced crossdressers”. They are living true to their gender, not dressing the opposite.

Patience,
Sorry but I'm inclined to agree with Micki's comments .
Think hard before suggesting boxes for people , over the years I could say I've moved through most of your list as I've developed and found my identity . I may stop at social transition or I might continue but I wouldn't do it just to be able to tick a box even if I could . It's not a flippant act it's life changing !
OK so I made my point , my avatar was taken at my art class , so I'm wearing forms , I'm wearing makeup and a wig , I don't need or use lower padding but in that skirt I did need to tuck which I nornally do anyway . I'll now ask the question , how do you know if I'm hormones , how do you know what anatomy I have ? The fact is you don't know , no one knows or really cares , I'm Terri to the rest of my group what ever they see me as I'm OK with it .

Yes, you're right about the distinction between trans and CDers. You're also right about it being an unintentional hierarchy, That was never intended. Someone else pointed out that some folks transition without hormones for health reasons and they're not accounted for, either.
So if the categorizations are flawed, what would be a more adequate gamut? Some people are answering the question seriously as is, so it's not entirely without merit. Can the options be improved?
Roberta, sit tight, we'll make room for you. BTW, what happened to your avatar?

Glad the trans vs cross dressing issue had been resolved. Probably I'm a level four on days when I have both the privacy and time and inclination. The "tucking" issue is not really a problem. I choose not to crunch the hardware. When I go out in public the hardware seems to be adequately accommodated by wearing a control panty and pantyhose. I have to assume those who desire to wear a really really form fitting dress need to crunch the hardware to perfect the illusion.
If you're at a level one, and only a level one, some people would classify that as a "panty fetish."

I would say somewhere between 4 and 5.
On this scale a level 2 since I don't do makeup, no shaving beyond the face, no wigs but I did grow out my hair, no fake body parts, no tucking, no hormones, no medical procedures.
But I dress maybe 90% of the time and go out regularly dressed, out at work, out to my friends and family, etc. But for me CDing is mostly about the clothes because that is the part I like, I have no desire to emulate a woman.

My avatar pic should answer the question :-). I consider myself “non-transitioning mtf transgender.” If life circumstances were different, I believe I would be on hormones. As far as tucking, that depends on my mood and what I am wearing — but I prefer ‘it’ out of sight and out of the way. Nancy

I vary between 0 and various blends of 1 through 4 at different times. Being non-binary means that I am more prone to vary a tremendous amount in my expression with a lot of mix and match. Much of the time I am 0 in terms of dressing but at the same time am 7 or 8 in the female-like behavior traits and characteristics. For me the expression as female is more recreational and very optional and not really so much of a need, but the internal female-like feelings and identity is mandatory or I just don't feel right. To me it is what is inside that matters and how or whether you express it is optional. I suspect for many of you it is the other way around, that is, the dressing generates strong feelings rather than the strength of the feelings and identity inducing some kind of need to outwardly express it. Or it may vary from time to time.

I drift between 1 and 3 depending on opportunity. When I can dress it's fully with wig and makeup and I'm always shaved all over with some kind of nail polish. Some of these steps are bigger but 3-4 only requires a purchase of breast forms and hip padding so that is an easy step.

Thank you all for your replies.
To address the CD-Trans question, I have omitted option 7 altogether. To address the issue of not tucking but using a gaff or other devices, I have expanded Level 4 to read:
LEVEL 4: Same as 3, in addition to using of breast forms, hip pads and / or other accessories.
As I think tucking is better kept in a category of its own.
And just to drive the point home one last time, the levels are not meant to be considered a hierarchy.
Xox,
P.
Vintage4sarah
05-30-2020, 11:58 AM
I would describe Sarah as a level 4.5. The reason for the decimal is that I don’t fully tuck due to my small package and a tight panty brief is adequate for for tucking away the parts.
Taylor186

I just read in another thread that a Rx I take daily for a non-HRT issue has hormone blocking properties (blocks T) and is sometimes used by MTF transitioners. Also, I am a CD with no inclination to go further. My CDing goes like this.
CD 0: Hormone-blocker (see above). Shaving legs, underarms, face and other places. 24hr x 365day.
CD 1: Underdressing. Level 0 plus: thongs, briefs, pantyhose, stockings, shapers or some combination. 24hr x 365day. At home or in public.
CD 2: Stealth/Non-binary. Level 1 plus: leggings, women's shorts, sometimes clear or matt nail polish or mascara. At home or limited public spaces (healthclub, grocery, etc).
CD 3: All femme clothing. Level 1 or 2 plus: skirt/top or dress, heels, bra, corset, breast forms or some combination. May or may not tuck. No makeup or wig. At home only.
CD 4: All femme clothing. Level 3 plus: makeup, eyelashes, colored fingernail polish, jewelry, wig. Always some form of tuck. A careful and time consuming process. Sometimes at home but mostly when going out.
I vary from my level 1 (daily) to level 2 (weekly) to level 3 (monthly/quarterly) to level 4 (three or four times a year).

Thank you for noticing. I knew that didn't look right. What I meant was whether someone used some kind of supplement to enhance their feminine appearance. For example, someone posted a thread the other day about taking something to promote eyelash growth. The thread was deleted, but it shows some people seem to take their interest to that point. I'll update the wording.
Mind you, catching that does not prove conclusively that you are not a little out of touch. ;)

LEVEL 6: Either 4 or 5, plus some kind of femininity-enhancing supplement.
My answer above was "a Rx I take daily for a non-HRT issue is also sometimes used by MTF transitioners."
A side effect of this drug, in a general sense, could be femininity-enhancing for some people. So, my answer is still, yes, I am every day taking a [potentially] femininity-enhancing supplement. But, of course as I stated originally, I am not taking it for its femininity-enhancing properties.
I have amended my original post for clarity as the Rx is not for something that fits exactly under the hormone umbrella (commonly, E or T). It is actually a hormone blocker (specifically, a t-blocker) that is sometimes used by mtf transitioners.

Honestly I don't feel like I fit in any of them categories really. If any thing Im a level 8. I can't stand being male. I only live about 45 hours a week as a man. The other hours. I'm female. The only reason I have to be male. Is because of work.
Short of hormones and surgeries. I do what ever I can to make my life easier. I regularly get waxed. Brows, legs, and arm pits. Looking at getting my facial hair removed asap. I keep my hair in a female style.
I'm way more comfortable in a makeup store, or a womans clothing section. Then I am in any male section.

I'm kind of a mix, don't fit into a single box. But interesting question since we aren't all on the same path. For me, I consider myself more of a "Tom Boy" where I'm a male but have feminine side. In public I wear women's form fitting jeans with hip and butt pads to give an hour glass figure; and padded bra under form fitting top. Rarely wear makeup or wig. I actually enjoy being noticed as a guy dressed femme. Will also go to gym and yoga classes wearing padded panties under yoga pants and padded sports bra without makeup or wig.

Hello
I think of myself a level 5,i`m quite convincing when I go out dressed up,i`m short, quite slim and effeminate anyway.I`m quite happy going shopping in lingerie departments picking out bras and other items. My breast forms are a 34b so know what size to get. It`s taken me years to get to this level, making sure my makeup is perfect, learning to walk in heels so my hips move.I`m finding it quite easy to get chatted up by men and go on dates, but I make it quite clear that I`m male underneath,i have been beaten up a couple of times when a hand goes up my skirt and they don`t feel what they expected.Eventually I hope to get married and make somebody a perfect "wife"

Six. I?ve been living full time as a woman and on HRT for roughly the last two years. Legally, I have fully transitioned to female, including My passport. Consultations with my surgeon for both top and bottom surgeries are scheduled for later this year (in July and December, respectively).
Hummmm... but is it still cross dressing, if you?ve burned your bridges behind yourself, and have no intention to ever return to presenting as your birth-assigned gender?

I?m a level 2 but I wear homemade breast forms. Basically I?m a MIAD but need something to fill out the bra so it fits right. No make up, no shaving (other than a little manscaping) and no wigs. I?m far from passable and only went outside once for Halloween.

tough question I thoroughly enjoy cross dressing when I dress I dress to pass at least thats what I strive for It doesn't always happen but I think it does a lot of the time. So I tuck I use forms of all kinds to obtain that femine figure. I adore makeup and the application of it and I am always trying different styles of wigs and make u. I enjoy going out to the mall, movies, restaunts and clubs and I try to dress to impress or I should say pass That means do not overdue it. but if I am going to a drag club over do it and show it off. NO one passes in a drag club. BUt when I am a guy I don't wear anything fem, maybe panties and I have tried bras under my clothes but I didn't enjoy it.
Wear what ever works for you
Just for the record I am wearing a beard right now and it won't last I started it when the lock down started adn it is ready to end soon. I do plan on a CD session with it one time to see if I can mke a pass work with a mask. I'll post pics when it happens and then the furry face is gone
So does that make me a Level 5 or 6 I am not sure To me CDing is about having fun but thats what I want life to be about HAVE FUN!!

Patience, I do sympathize. I know there are always problems in trying to construct a framework of this kind that has room for everybody! It's a challenging project you've taken on.
Problem #1: Is the question about our peak crossdressing level, or our customary crossdressing level?
Problem #2: This sequence of progression from one level to the next is not necesarily valid.
Regarding Problem #1, if this is about our peak crossdressing level, that's easily answered. I'm a Level 4. All femme clothing and underwear, breast forms, wig and makeup. I either shaved or used hair products to bleach hair on arms and legs--plus earrings, a feminine wristwatch, rings and other jewelry. Tne whole nine yards. Well, eight of them anyway! Delicious! I considered this essential on the few occasions I've been out in public, in an effort (at least) to "pass" undetected. No hip pads. No tucking; never tried it (you don't need it in a skirt or dress, only with pants and jeans). So I'm not a Level 5. I've also dressed Level 4 at home many times. In that regard I'm like you, a Level 4 with no interest in advancing it further.
If this is about our customary crossdressing level, that's different. Most times at home I can't be bothered to take the time for makeup or shaving. Apart from that, the level is variable. Panties always when crossdressed, but I suspect Level 1 is meant to refer to "underdressing," and I've seldom worn panties under male clothes. Occasionally I might be wearing panties and nothing else, but that's not typical and probably doesn't count.
Instead, I'm typically somewhere between a Level 2 and a Level 3--except that I have difficulty defining both. Level 2 is very typical for me, since it says "Panties and other fem clothing, like skirts, pantyhose, lingerie. No make-up." I'll often casually toss on a skirt, with a cute little slip and panties underneath, a pair of comfortable women's sandals, earrings for fun--and nothing else, except maybe some other jewelry. No makeup. (It's hot here in Phoenix, so I don't need a lot of clothes anyway. As a male I'd walk around in shorts and no shirt.)
Is this very far removed from what any woman might do? She might feel obliged to wear a bra, or "cover up" on top, but otherwise in the comfort of home she might toss on whatever felt natural and comfortable to wear, without fussing over details.
My only nitpick about Level 2 is to ask "How much "fem clothing" counts as "other"? Does it include a bra? Often I'm in the mood for a bra as well. But if I am, then a blouse or a dress naturally follows--and there I am, fully dressed as a female. (Or sometimes pants or capris with a top, if I'm in that mood.) Does that count as Level 2?
I suspect not, since Level 2 seems to refer to partial female clothing, while "all fem clothing" seems to elevate me into Level 3. There's only one catch there. Level 3 includes shaving, which I rarely do these days. So I don't properly fit there either, not most of the time.
Still, I suspect Level 3 really means just "dressing fully" in women's clothes, And I've enjoyed doing that since I was thirteen. Skirt and blouse, slip, nylons, bra and panties. Except for the "shaving." So I was a Level 3 almost from the beginning.
I'm sure the problem here is merely "lack of granularity," of provision for fine distinctions between one category and another. So in summary, while I have practiced Level 4 at times, most of the time I'm either at Level 2 or at Level 3, except for the "shaving," So call me typically a Level 2.5! (What are decimals for, after all! ;)
What about the wig? Is that mandatory to qualify for Level 3? I just grew my hair long at one time, If I'm "fully dressed," I sometimes wear a wig, and pften I don't. Sometimes I clap a wig on my head to attend to something outside in the yard. The neighbors are some distance away, but if they saw me in a blouse and skirt, they might start to wonder. With a wig on my head, seen from afar, all they're going to ask themselves is "who is that woman friend of mine who visits me now and then?" (Giggle!) If they ever did ask, which they never have, I'd tell them without batting an eyelid: "Oh, that's my friend Marianne!"
I propose the solution to this is the "KISS" Principle." Nothing to do with Gene Simmons; just "Keep It Simple..," That Level 2 means "partly dressed" in certain preferred items of women's clothing--skirts, lingerie, a nightdress or whatever--while Level 3 means "fully dressed" in women's clothing. Never mind the accessories of wigs, shaving and so forth. "Level 4" means "going the whole hog" in trying to present a feminine appearance, with makeup, shaving or whatever; details optional. "Tucking" may be an option in this category also.
That still leaves me with another problem. Namely, that I interpret Level 2 to mean "dressed in certain items of women's clothing and nothing else." Whatever we're wearing, even if only half-dressed, we still feel "fully feminine." What about those who like to mix male with female clothes? I think they fall into a different category, though I'm damned if I can see how to fit them on any linear spectrum of crossdressing. I hope I don't sound self-centered if I throw up my hands and say "that's their problem and not mine!" Do we call them a "Level 1.5" because they dilute female clothing with male clothing? I don't think that's the true answer. I think the reality is that "crossdressing" is a multimensional phenomenon, where "masculinity" and "femininity" need considering in their separate dimensions, and their "resultant" (speaking geometrically) can't always be plotted on a straight line. But maybe I'm making this too complicated myself, abandoning the KISS principle I was just advocating!
Tbere's also Problem #2. Why is "tucking" (Level 5) necessarily "more advanced" than "shaving" or "makeup" (Level 3)? Why do "shaving" and "makeup" necessarily go together? Aren't lots of crossdressers able to get away with one without doing the other? Yes, I know it's difficult, and I know I'm nitpicking on my part. But my biggest gripe on this score is "Why do we have to get to Level 4 before we qualify to use breast forms?" Surely breast forms of some kind are indispensable at Level 3, if we're dressed entirely en femme--unless we can get away with a padded bra, that is. Breasts are the quintessence of womanhood. Breast forms can even be needed at Level 2, if we just feel like lounging around the house looking cute in a bra and panties, which I occasionally do.
I imagine "serious" breast forms might mean super-duper luxury silicone prostheses in which some of us, so I understand, invest as much $300 or so, though other options are far cheaper. Just the same, I regard "breast forms" of some kind, "improvised" or otherwise, as a sine qua non of crossdressing from the moment we put on a bra--as I first did at the age of twelve or thirteen, stuffing it with a pair of rolled-up socks!
Again, if we regard "accessories" as optional in each category, this problem disappears.
Anyway I appreciate the good and thoughtful effort you've put into this scheme. Nothing works out perfect the first time--as I well know, having earned my living as a software engineer! :D
Two other comments on this thread. First, I do wish people wouldn't take offense at the idea of some "hierarchy" of crossdressing, an issue that's come up before. It's not a "hierarchy." It's not a competittion with "winners and losers." It's just a spectrum, that's all, and there's no sense in attaching any value judgment to anyone's position on that spectrum. I don't see myself as "superior" or "inferior" to anyone else just because of my position on that spectrum, any more than I'm "better" or "worse" than any other human being just because I happen to be "taller" or "shorter" than they are. They don't need to either.
Second, some of our "trans" members (though not all) take exception to the idea that what they're doing is "cross"-dressing, when subjectively all they're doing is dressing in conformity with their gender identity rather than their sex. Point taken; though to be brutally honest I think all this hypersensitivity to possible nuances of meaning is a wretched curse of our age and ought to be discarded in favor of blunt common sense. But is there a solution that can satisfy everyone? As far as "male to female" is concerned, I imagine it shouldn't be objectionable to ask people questions like "How femme do you dress? without any implication of whether they're "cross"-dressing or not.
Just an idea.

Due to family limitations, I dress only part time. In normal times I go out in public a lot. However, whether I am dressed or not, I feel 100% female; thus, I am just above your top classification. I know the best techniques for dressing and they really work. I do not take hormones, but do take herbs to be more feminine and a cream for some breast enhancement.

5 plus...
I have experimented with self medicating hormones but decided it was not a good idea. Thinking about seeing a doctor and doing it right. Still on the fence about it.
Having been through pretty much exactly this in my 20's all I can say is stick it out. I have had a good, if occasionally confused life as a male crossdresser. Now 58 years young.
5 plus.

Level 5 when I have a few hours home alone or when I could go someplace by myself for the better part of the day. Right now, we are all home together and if we go out we all go. I'm grateful for the family time but I also miss my Michelle time. So currently its probably more of a combination of level 1-3. Panties, workout capris & leggings, tanks, camis, and Tshirts, skinny jeans if its a little cooler. No bras, hose, skirts, or dresses.

I dont fit one category in particular, Im a little of 1-5. When around the house I usually have on leggings or a skort(or both), bra and forms, and a tighter-than-usual t shirt.
So for each category:
1.
2.
3. minus wigs, shaving, and make-up
4.
5. Occasionally tuck, but not very often.

I’m a level 2 and 3. For me, dressing is more of a sexual thing. I like to wear lingerie, high heels, Maybe a mini skirt and a bustier, wax legs and all the rest, but no wig or makeup. I only dress when I have a secret rendezvous with a guy. In my normal life, I wear panties almost everyday.

Right now, I'm at a 3, but I've been at a 5 in the past when I was single. I almost went to a 6, but the long-term risks of losing custody of my kid, plus the variety of expenses that come with a transition (laser, surgeries, etc.) kept me from fully committing and pulling back HARD.
Now that I have a much better support structure, 5 is my max, but most cases a 3.

Hi all,
I?d say that when I dress, its all or nothing for me. I want to achieve the closest to a feminine appearance as I possibly can, including de-fuzzing, make-up and shaping to hide/cover any and all traces of masculine. I dont take any kind of supplements.

1+ I wear panties (full cut briefs) to bed (with a man's t-shirt). My main interest though is silky nightgowns and slips, especially long nylon nighties. I have a rather large collection, and I am feeling the urge to buy a new one. I saw a Lucie Ann gown on Ebay that i may not be able to resist. Fully happy of my transformation and style now.
I would say level 3 but I do not own a wig yet and I put on make up just twice.
I can not wait to do it again 😋
I'm a little bit all over the place so maybe 2.5?
I'm finally back after a long hiatus. i started with shaving and makeup and have been slowly building my closet back to where it should be. I'll be at 4 as soon as I find the right things. This time I'm starting with a nice wig! Oh, and I tuck regularly, that's much farther down the list for me.

I'm a 4 when possible. Other times, I will just throw on a skirt and bra and be perfectly happy with that. If I ever get up the nerve to go out in public, I'll go all out to try to blend in as well as I can. (I just reread this before posting. When I tried to type "nerve" I actually typed "never." Subconscious trying to tell me something?)
Before I started lurking here, I'd heard the term tucking. I didn't quite understand exactly what it meant, though. I read through the tucking sticky thread and, I must admit, it scared the you know what out of me. :) At some point, I'll find an instructional video and see if a better understanding of what's actually happening helps. For now, a gaff seems to work just fine.

For me it is all about the outer look I suppose.
I don't wear panties (never cared to really).
I've been in public fully dressed up, a number of times to do stand-up comedy.
Wife knows all about it and fully supports me, she is just not a huge fan of seeing me in person as such.

I sometimes wear breast forms and a corset (for shaping) but only wear minimal makeup (lipstick and mascara and sometimes glitter eye shadow). Unfortunately, I stink at putting on makeup in a big way. But I'll never pass so I'm sort of accepting my limitations right now.

4, but no makeup as I am just awful at it.

Level 4. Just bought new breast forms (I'm now a size 50 DD) and they look great! Would toenail and fingernail polish be considered an enhancement? Lol... No plans to go beyond. No transitioning plans whatsoever.

At the moment I'm level 2. I would like to get to level 3 especially with the makeup but want the wife on board with that so I don't rock the boat. She's ok with me being dressed around her so I'm lucky and happy to have that much.

Although I would consider myself a cd ,and I?m probably a level 5 here I do sometimes feel a bit transgenderish and have done since I was very small im probably more confused than I should be and I think if I were alone I would think about transitioning but as I?m not alone I will stay on this side of the fence and try to enjoy both worlds, what I?m trying to say is do these levels really exist ?

Thank you for this. I am shocked that I am level 6. A little more each time and all of a sudden I’m there.

I'm level 4 "Sometimes", level 0 the rest of the time.I don't really need to "tuck"; not enough junk.

1-3 generally, sadly more often 0-1. Once in a while I?ve been adventurous and gone 4-5 territory with tucking.

Level 2. Not sure about make up.
I can't decided what level I am at. No panties, usually no makeup. I do some form of tucking, hip pad, breastform (diy), wig and female clothing.

3.5? or 6?
All fem clothing, makeup, wigs, I have breast forms but now just wear padded bras. But I'm also on HRT. I don't tuck.
I also go out and about en femme.

Five. But when I discovered this forum two years ago, I was and had been a two for many years. Hope I don't discover a similar forum for drug taking.

I suppose I would put myself somewhere between a 2 and a 3 by this scale. Yes on the wigs, as they are easy to remove with no trace. No on the makeup, as I have concern it would not all come off, plus I still share home with my son. No tucking, but I like to wear A-line skirts (no tight miniskirts) that make that unnecessary. My dressing does not leave the house, unless I have a hotel stay planned.

I've been going through this thread with great interest as I've been slowly building my count of posts. I think I've arrived at member status, though I still haven't been given access to my profile. But this has given me time to reflect on my relationship to crossdressing. This evening as I left Trader Joe's I felt disappointed that I wasn't wearing a brassiere. Of course, I spent the afternoon with a friend who doesn't know much about my journey of the moment so I wasn't wearing it with her. Now I'm home and a lovely black brassiere is beneath my tee shirt as dinner is heating up.
I'm most definitely a 1 though I don't own a pair of panties and don't expect I will. Brassieres, slips, lingerie for sleeping is more my style. I've begun adding to my collection and am every interested where this will lead me. I appreciate knowing there is such a wide range of approaches to this sweet form of expressing oneself. Thanks everyone for showing me the way.
