Monica Roberts (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monica_Roberts), a Houston native and a major force in trans activism, died in Houston on Monday, October 5, 2020. No cause of death was immediately reported, but an article in The Advocate (https://www.advocate.com/crime/2020/10/09/trans-activist-monica-roberts-killed-hit-and-run-driver) is now saying that she was struck by a hit-and-run driver.

I'm privileged to have known Monica, if only through the occasional interactions on projects we both contributed to. To say that she was "a force to be reckoned with" is not really accurate. She was a force, to be certain, but not at all one easily reckoned with. You always knew when she was in the room. Not many can make your Aunt Kelly look like a soft-spoken wallflower. That lady could do it every time.

Her contributions to our community were many and profound. She will be missed.

On the news this evening it was reported that Monica passed from a medical issue. When she was found Tuesday morning it was assumed she was a victim of a hit and run Her family said she had not been feeling well and encouraged to get medical help.

I met Monica about a week after I moved to Houston several years ago. Since then, our paths crossed many times. The last time I was with Monica she was speaking on Transgender History at a conference, something she traveled the country doing.

There is a giant hole in the front line of the fight for transgender rights.

I found this picture of Me and Monica taken at the Texas Transgender Nondiscrimination Summit several years ago.
