Hi All
I have been listening to music as part of my self-care routine and wondered if you had a favourite song that spoke to you and helped cheer you up or provided encouragement when things got tough?
I have been listening to Audioslave?s ?Be yourself? - which has the repeated lyric / chorus that ?To be yourself is all that you can do...?
There is also s song containing some dramatic piano parts by the Canadian singer / songwriter Chantal Kraviazuk ( might have messed up the spelling) - ?This is the way God made me?
Kind of obvious, I know...
Anyway, just wondered about others favourite songs for inspiration and affirmation?
Thanks,
Jenn

Daphne - Change (Fathers of Sound Sunset Vocal Mix)
Has the repeated refrains "Change, you can change your mind; you can walk away; You can change your mind, you don't have to stay" and "Change, you can change".
Eddie and the Hot Rods - Do Anything You Wanna Do
"Why don't you ask them what they expect from you?; Why don't you tell them what you are gonna do?; Do anything you wanna do".
The Wedding Present - My Favourite Dress
When you can work out what Gedge is singing about the song has nothing to do with our situation but it has the line "It was my favourite dress" which reminds me of my one and only Purge.

I write and record music as a hobby using four guitars, a bass, 24 track recorder, drum machine, and plenty of effects. My music is rock with distortion and fuzz along the lines of AC/DC, ZZ Top with a touch of Motorhead influence.
I have written and recorded several songs about my crossdressing. One of them, "Voice in the Attic" is about finding my late step mothers clothes in the attic. Lyrics start out with "the voice in the attic is calling his name, if he goes up there he won't be the same, caught in a web, he can't get away, she follows him everywhere, because she wants him to stay".
Either I am listening to music trying to come up with song ideas and riffs or I'm working on one of my own ideas. I do that more than I listen to other people's music but I do try to spend at least an hour each evening listening to other people's music.

Natasha Bedingfield’ Pocketful of Sunshine didn’t leave my car CD player for my first few years as Josie. I love the title song and “Freckles.” “A face without freckles is like a sky without the stars. Why waste one second not loving who you are?”
I love the soundtrack to Josie and the Pussy cats. It has a lot of fun girly pop.
“Rebel Rebel” by David Bowie. “You’ve got your mother in a whirl. She can’t tell if you’re a boy or a girl.”
“Who Says” by Selena Gomez
“You have every right to a beautiful life. ... I’m no beauty queen. I’m just beautiful me.”
“Roar” by Katy Perry
“Wide Awake” by Katy Perry
“Skyscraper” by Demi Lovato
“Perfect” AKA “****in’ Perfect” by Pink
(A great self-esteem song)
“Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift
My femme side is not the rocker my male side is. En femme I like Enya?s ?May It Be? with its spirit of ?Believe and you will find your way.? I also like ?Let It Go? from Frozen. It starts from ?Kingdom of isolation and it looks like I?m the queen.? And finishes with ?Here I stand, and here I?ll stay?,

Let it out so it can breathe?
Selena Gomez - Good For You

I'm a marquise diamond
Could even make that Tiffany jealous?
Spice Girls - Do It

You've got to get it right, this time

Christina Aguilera - Glam

Let's get glam, don't let the clothes wear you
Let's get glam, it's all in attitude
Now snap, now snap

Goldfrap, Annabel:
When you dream you only dream your Annabel.
All the secrets there inside you Annabel.
Bound beneath an emerald sky sing Annabel.
Nothing that they did will stop you Annabel.
Land of the lines, tangled there in porcelain.
Under the stars you'll begin.
When you dream you only dream your Annabel.
Sleep reminds you takes you there, oh Annabel.
Gentle whisper, endless winters, Annabel.
Why they could have let you be both Annabel.
Land of the lines, of the years below still lies.
You are the truth they denied.
Run like the sea, tangled there in porcelain.
Under the stars you begin.
Oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh ah
(Only a boy under that)
Oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh ah
(Only a boy da da da)

Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill has a section that hits the trans part of my mind -
And if I only could
I'd make a deal with God
And I'd get him to swap our places

Wildfire by Skylark, a few lines from the song.
She's faced the hardest times you could imagine
And many times her eyes fought back the tears
And when her youthful world was about to fall in
Each time her slender shoulders bore the weight of all her fears
And a sorrow no one hears
Still rings in midnight silence in her ears
Let her cry, for she's a lady (She's a lady)
Let her dream, for she's a child (Child)
Let the rain fall down upon her
She's a free and gentle flower growing wild

Years ago, while contemplating my absurd and pathetic existence as a crossdresser dreaming of being able to pass and wander out from the closet, I was listening to some old rock records and this song by the Velvet Underground jumped out and seemed to express my situation almost perfectly.
All Tomorrow's Parties (Lou Reed)
And what costume shall the poor girl wear
To all tomorrow's parties?
A hand-me-down dress from who knows where
To all tomorrow's parties
And where will she go and what shall she do
When midnight comes around
She'll turn once more to Sunday's clown
And cry behind the door
And what costume shall the poor girl wear
To all tomorrow's parties?
Why silks and linens of yesterday's gowns
To all tomorrow's parties
And what will she do with Thursday's rags
When Monday comes around?
She'll turn once more to Sunday's clown
And cry behind the door
And what costume shall the poor girl wear
To all tomorrow's parties?
For Thursday's child is Sunday's clown
For whom none will go mourning
A blackened shroud, a hand-me-down gown
Of rags and silks, a costume
Fit for one who sits and cries
For all tomorrow's parties

I've recently came across this song and it had amazing lyrics. It really speaks to me (and probably a lot of us)

A number of songs by Todrick Hall on the visual albums "Straight Outta Oz" and "Forbidden".
Little boys don't cry, little boys aren't shy
Little boys are tough, they do stuff that little girls don't try
Little boys don't dance, little boys wear pants,
Little boys are bold, you've been told you don't hold little boys hands…

If being a crossdresser obligates me to listen to pop music I would have to seriously consider purging. My last three concerts were my son-in-laws hard rock band, Queensryche and Dream Theater. No pop or country for me. LOL

The Replacements ; Androgynous
Here come Dick, he's wearing a skirt
Here comes Jane, you know she's sporting a chain
Same hair, revolution
Same build, evolution
Tomorrow who's gonna fuss
And they love each other so
Androgynous
Closer than you know, love each other so
Androgynous

Frank Ocean - Seigfried. Maybe not the happiest song, but definitely a really beautiful song about being misunderstood and not wanting to fit in. In a way it makes me feel understood and love myself.

Billy Joel, 'The Stranger'.
Well we all have a face
That we hide away forever
And we take them out and show ourselves
When everyone has gone
Some are satin some are steel
Some are silk and some are leather
They're the faces of the stranger
But we love to try them on
Well, we all fall in love
But we disregard the danger
Though we share so many secrets
There are some we never tell
Why were you so surprised
That you never saw the stranger
Did you ever let your lover see
The stranger in yourself?
Don't be afraid to try again
Everyone goes south
Every now and then
You've done it, why can't someone else?
You should know by now
You've been there yourself
Once I used to believe
I was such a great romancer
Then I came home to a woman
That I could not recognize
When I pressed her for a reason
She refused to even answer
It was then I felt the stranger
Kick me right between the eyes
Well, we all fall in love
But we disregard the danger
Though we share so many secrets
There are some we never tell
Why were you so surprised
That you never saw the stranger
Did you ever let your lover see
The stranger in yourself?
Don't be afraid to try again
Everyone goes south
Every now and then
You've done it why can't someone else?
You should know by now
You've been there yourself
You may never understand
How the stranger is inspired
But he isn't always evil
And he isn't always wrong
Though you drown in good intentions
You will never quench the fire
You'll give in to your desire
When the stranger comes along.

Star01 - In an earlier post you mentioned Mot?rhead as a band you liked. I was never heavily into that band, but I respected Lemmy?s intensity and attitude - RIP.
I like their song ?Til the End? -
?There ain?t no rules to follow
You can?t predict tomorrow
I know myself like no one else
The rest can turn to stone?
Hopefully this will establish my credentials before I suggest some more poppy and lighter songs in this thread.

Whoops - I messed up those lyrics in my last post - so much for my credentials....
Til the End
There ain?t no rules to follow
You can?t predict tomorrow
I know just who my friends are
The rest can turn to stone...
On the more pop side of things, I like the Fleetwood Mac song
Go Your Own Way
and there is also Edwin Collins
song

I hadn?t thought of this song for this thread before, but as a child of the 80?s I liked The Police.
Their song ?Message in a Bottle?
ends with the lyrics -
? I woke up this morning and can?t believe what I saw
A 100 million bottles washed up on my shore
Seems I?m not alone in being alone
A 100 million castaways looking for a home....
Sending out an S.O.S.
Sending out an S.O.S.
I hope that someone gets my message in a bottle ...?
The energy of the music and Sting?s voice make it not nearly as sad a song as the lyrics indicate, but somewhat hopeful - we?re not alone.

Just found myself singing, in my head, Looking at You by The Damned -
When it happened
Something snapped inside me
Made me wanna hide
All alone on my own, all alone on my own
I stood up on the stand my eyes shut tight
Didn't wanna see anybody
Feeling alright, having a good time
Doing alright, doing alright
Doing alright, doing alright
I saw into the dancing crowd
Felt like screaming out loud
I saw you standing there
Saw your long, your long hair
Opened up my eyes baby
You made me realise what I wanna do now
All I wanna do now babe is look at you
Looking at you babe, looking at you
Looking at you, looking at you baby
You baby
You baby
You baby
You baby
You baby
You baby
Yeah yeah
I saw into the dancing crowd
Felt like screaming out loud...
I had never before thought that the lyrics could have anything to do with CDing, but I think I'll be putting a different interpretation on the song in the future.

"Do not dress in those rags for me,
for I know that you are not poor.
You don't love me quite so fiercely now,
When you know that you are not sure...
It is your turn, beloved,
It is your flesh that I wear..."

And how I've loved
And I have served
And I have sinned
But I have learned
As long as you are true to the life that you live
This is the time to feel love
I feel a stirring deep within
Slowly picking up momentum
Like the tide coming into shore
Over and under in it's course
This feeling emblazed inside
Every nerve like a firefly
Hovering above me
Glow glow glowing divine
Every nerve like a firefly
Every nerve like firefly
This feeling emblazed inside
Every nerve like a firefly
I never want to loose
What I have finally found
There's a requiem
A new congregation
And it's telling me go forward
And walk under a brighter sky
Every nerve glowing like a firefly

WHAT ELSE!!!!! ....brings me back to when I was a girl full time and the song would come on the radio.
I still blush today...all my friends would tease me and start singing, pretending to hug and kiss...
I got so embarrassed...but it was all in good "clean" fun.
Today, when I hear the song, it brings me back to my youth and sitting around at the park, watching the people and cars go by, listening to the boom box and hearing that song and the love my friends showed me......I still giggle...and blush.
Candy Girl (https://youtu.be/E3nI2FClHgQ)
I've been a-searching
All this big wide world
Now finally I've found my
Candy girl, candy girl
I found me a girl (candy girl)
She sets my heart a-whirl
(Candy girl)
With hugging (hugging)
And kissing (kissing)
And loving (she's mine)
Mine (mine) mine
Woah oh, oh oh (candy girl)
We get along so well (candy girl)
I know just why I fell (candy girl)
She's thrilling (thrilling)
Oh, chilling (chilling)
Yes, she's so divine
(She's mine)
Mine (mine) mine
Woah oh, oh oh (candy girl)
When we're out together
Everyone knows the way we feel
We both seem to glow
With the glow of a love
And it's plain to see
(Our love is real)
I'm happy as can be (candy girl)
She vows eternally (candy girl)
To hold me (hold me)
And love me (love me)
Until the end of time
(She's mine)
Mine (mine) mine
Woah oh, oh oh (candy girl)
Candy girl, candy girl
Candy girl, candy girl
Candy girl, candy girl...

Yes, I am closing in on 70 but I like hard rock and try to incorporate down tuning and the heavy sound of the Stoner/Doom genre in my music but the lyrics and subject are lighter. My son-in-law's band plays hard rock based in Minneapolis and tours around the upper Midwest during more normal times. They're into the down tuned type stuff as well.
I just like some of the heavy sounds in that genre. At my age I saw Elvis, the Beatles, Stones and all the rest on Ed Sullivan. For pure listening when I"m in a more mellow mood I'm a huge James Taylor fan. Fiona De Wilde who posts on this forum is a good musician and singer so I have been making my way through her Youtube videos most recently.
I don't like pop or country, it's just not my thing. Dressing en femme does not come with the obligation to have to like pop music but that seems to be the preferred genre.
