A GG friend works for a major UK supermarket chain and told me that employees are not supposed to wear too much make-up as it is offputting for customers.

If they do, they may be required to remove it.

Is there such a policy?

Haven't a clue because I don't work for a major UK supermarket chain. However, in the USA most companies have dress codes (or at least a paragraph about suitable work attire) and it is common to see statements to the effect of "must present a professional appearance", "excessive jewelry and makeup should be avoided", etc. Both US and UK law give employers a broad degree of discretion in managing their employees' appearances. There are boundaries (e.g., religious jewelry in the USA), but a general policy of this sort doesn't sound particularly far off base.

Obviously your GG friend who works at a major UK supermarket chain is under the impression that there is at her workplace. Why would she lie about that.

Harrah's casino in Reno fired a woman for notwearing makeup. Cocktail waitresses are required to wear lipstick and eye makeup.

each company has its own level of what is too much make up that they will allow their employees to have on. it all depends on the companys prof. level. the companys employees and how they look reflect the image of the company they work for
