View Full Version : Survey: How many of you have seen a TG person/CD out in public?

I don't want to step on someone else's thread, so I am starting this one.

Not to pick on Natalie5004, but she wrote the following, which I think is perhaps a shared sentiment on this board:

Clothes choices for me and other cross dressers

I find that mostly crossdressers dress like they just discovered their fem side and tend to go over the top with short dresses or skirts and flashy outfits.

My question for the forum is simply, how many individuals have you seen in the general public who you suspect is TG/CD?

A few clarifications.

1. By someone who is TG/CD, I mean to be someone who is presenting female but who you think was assigned male at birth. This would include those who present female part of the time (what I consider the term crossdresser to most commonly fit), those who present female most of the time but have not fully transitioned, and those who have fully transitioned.

2. By general public, I mean not at a place that you would expect to find individuals in the TG/CD category. For example, I belong to a TG group, and have met individuals through that group that fit into all three categories above. Nor do I mean at a club or place that would cater to TG/CD individuals, like a LGBT bar. Instead, I mean a Costco, or a grocery store, out on the street, etc.

Edit: Halloween doesn't count either.

Personally, based on these parameters, I have only seen a handful of individuals who I suspect to be TG/CD, perhaps 5 to 10. Trust me, I look for them, and I don't see many examples.

So, based on your experiences, how many have you seen "out in the wild?"

Hi Dee, I would say I see about one a year out and about usually while we are shopping. My wife and I love to shop and she is almost always the one who first spots them. She is always super excited and runs up to tell me lol. We have seen 2 or 3 at Ross(the clothing store) and one at a nearby mall. The last was during a trip to Gatlinburg Tennessee, she was just strolling down the Main Street which my wife thought was awesome.

Well, I don't pay that much attention to strangers in public, it's very rare that I think "that person is CD/TG".

When I was an assistant at uni, I did encounter a student (not one of mine) who was clearly FTM a few times. Never interacted with him.
That's really the only example I remember. Either those I met (and statistically, I must have) passed or I have terrible memory.

OMG, oodles and oodles. Thing is, some may have been CDers, some Drag Queens, and some Transwomen. I never stopped to survey them individually. I don't recall any of them being dressed in a way that was not in line with the social context of their attire.

I can't say I've seen enough people to agree or disagree with the quoted text.

I see one a couple times a week. My sons partner is trans. Plus I saw an amazingly beautiful TG girl at the amusement park last week. Saw what I thought was an old woman with very large breasts over at Home Depot yesterday except she had a full white beard.

I would say that any that I have seen would barely count. One was a tall, older guy at a Walmart, just the wig, pants, and sandals were anything like feminine. Another was an average, heavy set guy at the store, only he was wearing eye make-up -- that's all. Last was a bald guy who was wearing women's pants and t-shirt and possibly a bra. None of which would have been mistaken for a woman inside of 50 feet.

Wait, I did see one at Big Lots who looked reasonable but was wearing a covid-mask -- myself in a mirror.

I can remember seeing a few, some quite nicely presented. but not too many, however one sticks in my mind. An obvious male wearing a dress, wig and a little makeup at my local hardware store many years ago.

I recall one person in particular that I thought might be. ?She was not very well put together, seemed to be quite aged and infirm, and honestly, I was unsure whether she was trans or was simply not very capable of self-care due to age and infirmity.

I see them at the street fairs in my area. Usually 2 or 3 in a given day. Usually trying to blend. Nothing flamboyant.

Outside of that, maybe one or two a year. again, nothing flamboyant. Just a gal going about her business.

I once saw a guy wearing a pink fairy-girl outfit with petticoats. Full beard too.

Otherwise, I'm certain I've seen a few, but I just accept people at face value without thinking about it. If I see someone presenting as female, it would never even occur to me to wonder if she really was female. It has nothing to do with being egalitarian. I'm just gullible.

My wife and I were literally discussing this subject tonight. She implied something to the effect of as many people as there are that you read about on your site, you would think we would see or spot more in the wild.

I would have to say I don’t frequent places where spotting would be more normal, but as the thread stated the poll is excepting those anyway. I am much more attuned to it these days than in the past, but honestly in my lifetime it has probably only been a accumulative total of a handful. I really only remember one instance well, but it was in a Mall where I grew up, maybe 35 years ago. I clocked them walking through the mall, but I seem to recall they blended okay and had made a very good effort. At that stage in my life I hadn’t told anyone my secret and I was alone in the mall, so nobody to point them out to or discuss.

Bottom line was my wife was pointing out that to us it is very rare, but who knows, maybe those around here are just highly efficient in their presentation!

I am interested in reading more replies, though they have been fairly diverse so far.

1. Many years ago I met a CDer in Auckland. When she introduced herself to me, I was blown away! Completely passable. I'd never have guessed.
2. Some five years ago I attended a themed event in London, where I met many cross dressed people. I wrote about it in the Loved Ones section.
3. I see cross dressed people quite often at the opshop. Some are more recognisable than others.

4. I've also met two crossdressers in drab mode. They could each have been a brother.

Since I have yet to go out fully dressed, I tend to look around (trying not to stare) and see if I can find any CD/TG people. I'm hoping that I will start to see more and more, which will make me feel more confident to go out. But so far I'd say I see an average of 1-2 a month, mostly dressed to blend, with varying degrees of success. Occasionally there will be a young 20-something person dressed very flamboyantly, which makes sense since the younger generations are so much more advanced in this area than most of us who grew up fearing shame and worse if anyone ever found out.

I have no idea, probably every time that I venture into the nearest city, Leeds, or even my local town. The thing is that I don't go out looking for other CD, or TG people. Of course I have seen the obvious ott types, and one or two not particularly well presented. But I'm certain that I have passed or seen many more who simply blended in.

Your first criteria is key because I've seen just as many guys wearing skirts as I have someone in girlmode presentation which is about a handful over a period of 5+ years. So less than 1 per year in a major metro area with enough colleges is very low number

Hi Dee , about 4 or 5 over the years but have not been out much in last 3 years . 1 was very passable in a bar. Being on her own for for an hour and her voice gave her away.Others in shops. 1 at night in particular was drunk and quite vocal about it in a residential area. Shouting I am you know.Thats it. None recently though.

Can I just throw something into the mix. When we talk about going out enfemme and blending in, usually somewhere in the post will be a comment about, " How people are too caught up in what they're doing to take much notice".

So being that we're people isn't it the case that we've been in proximity to a member of our community and just not noticed?

To answer the question, I've probably seen one or two in the last 5-10 years but then again I hardly visit the shops. It's quite likely that in the week I spend enfemme each year I spend more time shopping than the rest of the year!

On occasion my wife and I have one shopping or eating dinner. I have seen a couple
out eating with their wife. People recognize them but just go about their own business.

We have a TG cashier at the Foodlion I shop at not far from my house.

I have not seen that many, two come to mind one at a grocery store she looked great (both my wife and I wasn't 100% sure). The second years ago, I was sure it was a sister in a mall she wasn't as well put together the fear in her face gave it away.

Not many sightings for me but I have seen a couple over the years shopping at the grocery store. Last year I saw one of us wearing a long dress walking around the park with a GG. Later when I was heading back to the parking lot I saw them at a picnic table. I said you both look beautiful today. The GG said Thank you, I really appreciate that.

I see them occasionally, mostly at the grocery store. I live near the University of Denver so there are plenty of students out and about. CD's and TG's are not that common, but Non-binaries are seen once in awhile. Just yesterday I saw what looked like a guy reading the ingredients on an ice cream container and I commented that the brand was really good. He turned to me and I realized the he was a GG in men's clothing and style as well as showed male mannerisms, but wore lipstick and a bit of makeup. An NB FTM. We had a nice conversation. I was wearing a lavender T and had my bag hanging from my shoulder. Automatic recognition. She/he was about 20 years old and I am old enough to be her grandfather - yet there was instant comfort with each other. Wonderful experience. We walked to the checkout counter together talking like nothing was strange. There wasn't just two shoppers showing a bit of gender variance. No big deal in Denver where there are lots of trans people, just not in my neighborhood.

Literally yesterday at a Kawasaki motorcycle demo day in Auburn , Ma I saw someone that is/has transitioned.she was with a guy , I assume a very accepting friend that?s knowledgeable about motorcycles. She seemed comfortable in her skin. As far as clothing goes, it was jeans , s high top sneakers with pink laces , a tee shirt . She had blonde hair just past her shoulders , ample chest, and sounded like she had a grasp on her feminine voice.

Over the years I have seen both MTF and FTM, probably on average 1 per year. All have been dressed to blend, by that I don't mean a bearded man in a fairy dress. I live in a fairly conservative area so my sightings are probably limited.

Dee, I live in a city so I see it quite a bit. For example, I go to a pub every Friday night. One of the bar tenders is a trans women. I know, because when I first started going she had not yet started transitioning. Today she is the most lovely young lady.

1) When I was in San Francisco for training back in 1978 I noticed two very passable young ladies having lunch. The only clue was their height when they stood up which prompted me to scrutinize them.
2) Saw the same very tall cross dresser accompanied by the same woman (wife?) twice in my medium size city; once on a street car, once at a local Costco. She made no attempt to pass and I would characterize her attire as exhibitionist. The woman accompanying her seemed uncomfortable and not fully onboard.
3) Saw a very hirsute cross dresser who made no attempt to hide her maleness; hairy as could be with no attempt to conceal very dark hair, gait was more of a strut that I normally would see a person who was very angry and determined to get somewhere.
4) Saw one in a local book store who would have escape notice except for the guy with her who seemed to be a creep. The guy was all over her and I would guess has not read a book in several decades.

On the flip side my wife has a second cousin who is a transman and has been to our home. At the time I did not know she was a transman because her facial features, height and build were still what my mind would expect of a young woman, and, it was build as an all female cousin get-together.

Well, I can honestly say that I've noticed only ONE CD out in public, ME! LOL But, (and I know you're talking about M to F CDs and transgenders), but I met an F to M transgender at the LGBT bar that I was going to. Tbh, I don't really look for other CDs, I just do what I do, mostly keep to myself and have my fun while out en femme. :bs:

Oh, the LGBT bar did have drag shows, but I don't suppose that counts, does it? LOL

Very few truthfully, but haven?t been out a lot lately. I?ve seen ladies that I wasn?t positive about many times, but I won?t count them. Probably the most recent lady that I recognized as CD was very tall, slender and in a long summer dress and sandals. It wasn?t her height that ?clocked? her. It was her behavior. She was very nervous and avoided looking at others, kind of like me when I first went out dressed.:)

I am certain that the woman that owns the salon where I get my(male) hair cut is a transwoman. I have never brought it up with her; why would I?. There was a period of time when I thought I NEVER saw another trans person in the wild, but that has changed in the last ten years. I have seen a few who have done a really sad job of it, and a few who I wasn't sure about. I suppose the ones who are really good at it, I wouldn't have noticed at all.

I'm not including the fully out, but not fully passable transwomen who I occasionally go out to lunch with, just the ones I don't know who I have spotted in the wild.

We are out there. I've finally gotten at least that much through my head.:bonk:

I've seen 3 that I remember:

1. About 50 yrs ago, I was walking behind what I thought was a very shapely young gal in Provincetown, mass. She had on tight bell-bottom jeans, a gals top and long straight brown hair. When she turned around I saw she was a young guy in make-up. I still remember her great rear end all these years later.
2. About a dozen yrs. ago I was in a mall & out of a restaurant walked a guy with some make-up on and his normal guy haircut. He had on a tight halter top and a short cheerleader skirt with sandals.
3. A month ago I was sitting in a local downtown area and saw a CD walk by in gal's jeans, clogs, a t-shirt and black wig.

I do not see very many. Outside of clubs, this year I can only think of 2 so far. One on the same plane, the other in the car rental pick up area in Florida. I guess that tells you where I spend a lot of time.

I've seen a few over the years. One of my hobbies is amateur radio (Ham radio) and I remember reading various technical articles by a particular Ham. Much later I discovered that this Ham is now openly presenting as female. I've seen and talked with her at various ham radio events and read her blog regularly.

I've also seen other CD/TS's at various ham radio events.

I have only seen two that I was aware of. Several years ago, I saw a dresser in Home Depot one evening. I say dresser because I have no idea if she was a CD'er or Trans. Her facial features, extreme height, and being dressed a bit too nice for HD gave her away. I remember her makeup was done very well in a natural look, but her jaw line just projected a masculine face. She had at least 3-inch heels on, and without them, she probably was over 6 feet tall already. Her dress was simple, but very short. The second observation was while driving home after work one evening. I was stopped at an intersection waiting for the light to change and on the corner was a guy wearing a pink sleeveless summer type dress that when to midthigh. It appeared he had no makeup on, and his hair style was a crew cut.

I live down by Branson and don't think I have ever seen a cd down there.
I guess there are only two kinds of crossdressers, just as there are only two kinds of toupees.... 'that's a bad toupee' and 'that's not a bad toupee'... LOL

I saw a photo once on facebook of a family from Kansas that one person certainly looked like a crossdresser. I saw another fellow at a thrift store, he was looking at dresses and I was looking at elastic waist jeans.

I have seen a lot of 'fem boys' when I was involved in community theater years ago, even shared a room with one when we went on a show in the capitol. He wore make up and boxer briefs.

My wife and I saw a guy wearing women's clothing minus a wig and makeup at LOWE'S a while back. He did have a purse he got into to make payment. That's when my wife told me to never go out in public like that. I hope she meant all dressed up without a wig and makeup vs. just going out fully dressed. Anyway, I've mentioned the following before; and will repeat myself in this thread. When we were buying new furniture for our home this past November, one of the women sales associates strikes me as having to be a MTF trans. Post op or pre op I'd have no idea; but, I'd bet heavy money on her being TG. In early October there is a Pride event in the area that I hope to attend. If she's there, I'll then know more.

We have a TG cashier at the Foodlion I shop at not far from my house.

Almost forgot - we have a TG cashier at our local Staples. Don't go there a lot, but she's been there almost every time over the past few years, so Staples must be quite open, and none of the customers seem to care. She has beautiful long hair, and I've been tempted to ask how she gets it to look so good!

About 30+ years ago I saw my first crossdresser while shopping near Boston. Since then, I have developed a finely tuned radar for other Tgirls. A lot of factors include voice, height, style of walk, etc. When I travel with my wife (which we do extensively), it is a fun challenge. My first face-to-face was in Amsterdam in 2006 with the front desk clerk at our inn only her voice and large hands would have been a clue. She was delightful and helpful especially when my wife lost her wallet at the Flower Markets. The last one I met was a young Tgirl in transition in Sydney. We were both browsing in a hobby shop (model trains, etc). Besides locations in the USA like New Hope or Provincetown most have been in Europe with the absolute best sightings in Oslo where I saw 4 in one day.

One time I was in a local thrift store. The cashier appeared to be a sister. It was Sunday, when they give a senior-citizens discount. My hair is grey; I often receive the discount without asking, or if I do, they don't bother asking for proof of age. In my usual circumlocuitous way, I asked the cashier if I get the grey-hair discount. She took offense, as she heard my words as "gay hair" and thought that I was dissing her appearance. Oops!

Another time was when I was finishing an IT gig in a big-box store. If I recall correctly, the stuff I touched affected their security cameras. Was getting my paperwork signed in the LP office. The LP chick was a sister, I'm sure. She was tall, and strikingly beautiful. If it hadn't been a professional setting, and I weren't attached, and I were 30 years younger, I'd have asked for her number.

Not that many that I have given a thought about. I often notice tall women and almost always conclude that they are just that. If I do not include my time in the far east. Then probably only a Dozen or so over many years.

Great thread!

Well, the last time was just a few weeks ago when I met another for a short shopping experience, it was our first meeting in person and an awesome afternoon! We wandered into a few stores and just chatted, the afternoon went way too quickly. She was so cool and comfortable with the whole thing, I just regret not having done more of that so much earlier in life. I'm still amazed that I did not detect any response from any other shopper or worker, though I do not pass at all, only blend, and my friend and I were just chatting the whole time with little attempt at a femme voice.

The time before that was about a year ago, I posted about that one and looking back I would say she was TG/transitioning but of course that is a guess based on the situation and clothing choices. She was just a bit overdressed for Barnes and Noble at noon on a Saturday, seemed to be somewhat comfortable but walked just a bit too timidly thru the store. I think I noticed her walk first, then added in a few other clues but I'd say that 99% of the public didn't notice a thing.

About 10 years ago my wife and I were walking into the local Target just after dark when we saw a very well dressed CD approaching the door at the same time. She was wearing a two piece dress, just above the knees, nice pumps and makeup most appropriate for a business meeting. Now this happens to be my most favorite look and she was rocking it, 100%! I almost have to come up with a bigger word than "jealous" but I certainly was! The biggest clue from the start was that no one else was even close to similarly dress, most were in jeans (hopefully clean), tee shirts or comfy tops, sandals or sneakers and no makeup. We later saw her in the makeup aisles, and I so wanted to say congrats or otherwise compliment her but that would have caused a problem when we got home!

There are many others that I've seen lately but I'd put them more into the NB category as there were clear items of one gender or another, from nail polish and long false lashes on a guy who simply seemed to like them (he was at work at Costco, has a male name tag and was wearing "guyish" clothing) or the occasional guy with brightly colored nails and some makeup but no other visible attempt to appear to be feminine.

I'm sure I've seen some, but only one comes to mind immediately, from some years ago. She was working in an antique store just up the block from where I would be playing a gig later that evening. She looked great, and we had a nice and quite friendly discussion about antique phonographs. As we parted, I thanked her and (brazenly and flirtatiously) complimented her outfit. Only when she smiled could I tell she was not GG.

If I wasn't married, I'd have asked her out.

Of course we have.
I was at the mall with my wife and she pokes me and says "there's your sister". Since I don't have one I immediately knew what she meant. She wasn't that obvious, but to those of us that practice the same techniques the clues were there. Actually we've seen lots of "sisters" in very average places. I never say hi as I don't want to cause anyone any stress, just as I wouldn't want some random person doing that to me.

Where I live there are quite a lot obvious/candidate crossdressers. Nobody worries about them, but they just don't dress like the other women.

They tend to wear seamed stockings, short skirts, heels and lots of makeup. The other women are generally in ripped jeans and trainers or sandals.

The interesting thing is that in hot weather, all types tend to display lots of bust & visible brassieres. The normal women are careless about their bras, with clashing colours, frumpy styles, dropped straps and bands which ride up.

As somebody who needs to wear a bra full time, I can tell who has been properly fitted, who has selected their bra colour & style and their matching top.

All I can say is that my TG sisters are generally fully busted & firmly brassiered!

Thanks all. Keep the responses coming.

I would say most of the responses mirror my experience, maybe once or twice a year.

One of my friends also has a nonbinary child, born female, but currently presents male. I've also met about 25 members of our group.

However, as a guest speaker for our group said, when you've met one TG person, you've met one TG person.

Daily.
Of course I'd be the one here to say that :/ , but my life was never sheltered and my lifestyle is not condusive to conservative areas - at - all - ever so that maybe partly why..
Another reason is that in my particular area of Los Angeles we have a heavy mix of vacationers, homeless folks ( of all kinds) put out by society or family and the mentally ill along with the everyday folks so you have to stay alert.

The two I see daily are this one he's always dressed in a mini skirt , crop top and some kind of heels, wild hair .. started approaching me in March at my community garden plot gate( which is locked ). Always trying to get my attention to help him get rid of someone "following" him.. As a lone GG in LA I make it CLEAR to stay back or go home . Or I stay silent.
The other is a guy 60+ always in a red velvet dress, black hose and black patent leather booties and make up from another universe and wild wig ..I give him a wide berth also.
Then my ex husband I sometimes see if he needs to eat , but hes careful about what he wears around me now. No outward dressing .

Then the vacationers always hiding behind their wives with all kinds of oufits.

When you see what I do on a daily basis , the last thing any CD should do is criticize gg's bras....

At this stage of my life I seem to be more comfortable with the androgynous /NB born males who are ok with who they are but wear whatever they want with makeup/ their own hair /piercings/polish/ earrings etc and dont think they are girls. I have to have someone who is ok with who they are with no hidden side .

There was one guy that belonged to a social group I was in. For a while he dressed feminine, but never tried to pass. He just wore the clothes. He was a odd duck anyway, so everyone just took it as "Oh, that's just ****"

There was one homeless guy I'd see from time to time, wandering up and down the streets in a skirt. I don't know his story. I never actually met him. I just saw him as I was driving by.

But generally speaking, "in the wild" sightings are very rare for me.

Three weeks ago, at the Hy-Vee on the northeast side of Madison, WI. Going in, passed a person in a short white dress and high heeled sandals. Only got a short glance, but 'she' had more of a rough look. If I'd had more time, I would.ve said hello.

Years ago, on two occasions, I spotted what was clearly a young teenage male dressed. One was leaving a convinience store, another was in line as a sandwich shop. Both were dressed, but not real convincingly. The vibe I got was of a kinky situation, where a Misgtress ordered them to dress, then go to a place where they would have to interact with store employees, ie humiliation Since presenting as femme is a privlidge, I did not stare -- but I wish I could've given some support.

If a CD or "TG" had a good enough presentation to pass as a woman, how would we know? We might see one and not even notice?

That said, once I went to a local beauty school for some sort of discount treatment (I forget what) and one of the students had beautiful long blonde hair and a nice set of breasts that she was exposing pretty well, but a pretty prominent adams apple. I'm assuming this was a TG person.

Other than that one time and once long ago in a drug store, I don't recall ever seeing any that I could tell.

There are a lot of TG's out in the public in all types of venues. Many of them spend a lot of time I'm making themselves look female in every way. They do weight and shape training. They spend time on acquiring just the right type of clothing to look stylish, natural and feminine. They never over-dress. The whole package of female appearance and mannerisms is key to their being. That said, I suggest that we see a lot more TG's in public than we realize. They have succeeded so well that they pass perfectly. We can even interact with they and they handle themselves so well and speak so well that we have no idea that they are trans.

Too many to count, but then that's over a great many years.
Yes, I'm old. Now get off my lawn!
Used to run into the same trans-woman at the supermarket almost weekly, and once saw a CD there shopping as Dorothy Gale, right down to the patent leather Mary Jane's.

If none of us have seen all that many, then perhaps not many of us actually DO go out in public after all (Save for a FEW here) OR those of us that do go out must be very good at "Passing".

Yes, I saw a mature pretty woman in the pew next to me at very liberal church one day.
Next month she showed up at a support group 10 miles away.
The minister of the church was a gay woman.
They had meetings of trans support groups on the third Tuesdays of the month.

Quite frequently.
A few days ago I was standing in line waiting to pay for something when I noticed the dress the woman in front of me was wearing and wondered where she got it from.
Then the woman spoke in her natural male voice when the little boy with her called her "dad".

Aside from catching my reflection in a store window as I breeze past in a cute skirt and heels, I might see about two or three per year. I love to shop at Bed Bath and Beyond and they have a cashier who, I believe is mtf. As we are both easy to read, we give each other a wink and a nod. It's just not a big deal any more. Also, those that go the full trans route with hormones and facial feminization surgery are so beautiful and sometimes more feminine than GGs so it's really hard to know how many have slipped under my radar.

When out I'm in male mode, I'm always on the look out for bullies of all flavors but the last time I had to defend a crossdresser was more than 30 years ago.

Sarah:

I have probably crossed paths with less than five sisters in the last seven years while out and about. The one I remember most was in the Macy?s dress department. She was quite tall, dressed in club wear, and fairly obvious. I was in girl mode picking up an online order when she passed by. We made eye contact and she knew she had been made and just disappeared. I walked around the women?s department later and she was no where to be found.

I also had an instance, also in Macy?s, that the sales clerk ringing me up was obviously trans. I was again in girl mode, but no recognition on her part that I was TG. The other GG working with her that day was obviously cool with it. Probably the biggest surprise of the day was finding two sales clerks in the women?s department at a Macy?s!

I was in Las Vegas when one of the periodic cd get togethers was going on and I saw a (woman) who had a very obvious man's walk. I was torn between keeping silent or advising her to feminize her walk, thereby possibly embarrassing her by outing her (there was no one else around so it wouldn't be a public outing), but in the end I kept silent.

those who present female part of the time (what I consider the term crossdresser to most commonly fit)

Being a crossdresser or crossdressing has absolutely nothing to do with presenting as a female. There is no requirement to present as a female in order to be a crossdresser or to take part in crossdressing. Right now I am in a bra, nightgown and panties. I am not presenting as female. I am still a crossdresser.

I have seen lots of crossdressers with no interest in presenting as a female. I recently saw a man wearing a dress in Costco There was no sign of a bra or breast forms and as far as I could see, he wore men's shoes. Last vacation at the pool, I watched a young couple walking. He was sporting a one piece swimsuit and a beard. It looked like he was having a good time. Frequent a few thrift stores and you are bound to see men like me taking women's clothing into the fitting rooms. It happens often enough.

I have seen some crossdressers who make no attempt to blend in but do make a poor attempt to present female. The most recent was at a Walgreens. He was about 6' 4" without the heels, super tight and short miniskirt and a jacket over his blouse. Bad makeup and the stench of perfume completed his presentation. I think I also saw him in Las Vegas the last time I was there. Maybe that was a different guy...

Those crossdressers that take the time to present as a woman probably do a pretty good job blending because I almost never see them.

I see them out most of the time around lunch or dinner time. We seem to eat at the same places. I don't keep count of the ones I have saw, but Goodwill is another place I see sisters. The latest was a few days ago, when I was out to dinner. The manager was TG and beautiful but talked to the wait staff in full male voice. One of the wait staff was also TG. Both were dress full femme and the makeup, cloths and hair were spot on.

I probably notice about one a month, but I’m sure there are many I just don’t notice.
A lot depends on where I am at the time.

My wife & I often go to the theatre in London and there are many gay or trans-friendly bars around the main theatre district and it’s normal to see a few TG’s or CD’s of various descriptions.

We recently went to a local gardens (RHS Wisley for any UK girls) and long summer dresses are very common.
There?s also a lot of space so you can keep a safe distance once inside.

Most people go in family groups or friends together so a woman on their own does attract notice.
My wife did spot another CD with a group of friends who were either GG or totally passable.
We later overheard the CD in the car park and she spoke with a male voice.

It looked like she & her friends had a great time.

There is a trans woman who works at the Costco near me so I see here regularly. She's usually just wearing jeans and a top like all the other female Costco employees.

For what its worth (and maybe a comfort to those struggling with the idea of going out) unless I'm in female mode myself, I'm pretty much going about my business, not really look for or caring how others are presenting unless they are really over the top obvious. I'm sure most of the people around me are pretty much the same.

Spoiler alert: as we age, the morphological differences between Mal and female tend to become less pronounced and I thin for those of us about 60-ish, our appearance tends to become more androgynous. I see people everyday in their sixties and above who may or may not be genetically female, but their presentation is such and their clothing choices seem appropriate to the situation. I'm not particularly interested in asking them either. So in answer to the original question...who knows???

Once at the thrift store, the individual was clearly nervous and visibly shaking. He was dressed a well as he knew how. I was in male mode he kept looking at me. So I grabbed the dress I was looking at and asked if he thought I would look good in it.
He said for Halloween?
I said, no do whenever I want to wear it. The interaction was brief but I don?t know what effect I had.

I think I saw a sister yesterday at the drugstore, but I'm not sure.

Her general build was a bit -um- masculine and her hair looked to me like it was a wig.

But like I said - I'm not sure. I couldn't find any obvious giveaways, such as an adam's apple. So - I'll never know.

I was in the lobby of the IDS Tower in Minneapolis, Chrystal Court area, second floor heading towards the walkway. Late summer 1980 just looking around downtown and I saw a "woman" come across the skyway walk and enter the plaza. She looked totally like a woman (may have actually been one) and was dressed in a period white blouse with a patterned white gray Black and Tan skirt with matching open jacket. The skirt had a button effect. She looked like she was a busy secretary as she approached and then her skirt shifted and I got a shot of nylon clad legs then noticed the beige matching heels. She swished the front of her skirt closed and continued walking past and I never saw "her" ever again, but I did look into her face and eyes. I have always been a "dresser" but never thought I would bump into a man in drag. I have been to the big city and sure, have seen the hookers and drag guys out on the street and in the bars but this woman really caught my eye. Not a Charlie's Angles babe by any means but just a working business woman probably late for an appointment after a salad lunch--nothing more. But with my personal instinct I felt I was seeing a man and a real pro right there. Totally passable and blending and as they say "nothing to see here" kind of deal. I am probably wrong but to this day I still get that vibe that I busted her right then and there. I never gestured or glared or anything, and that was it. But whoever she was she was flawless and totally passed. Maybe it was me seeing the urgency or her haste in moving through the crowd quickly which may have stopped any gawkers or pointers or questioners as she looked slightly in a hurry but not miffed---just another day kind of deal. I may have been wrong but I was the only one who suspected. Pretty amazing and I often wonder about that.

I have seen at least 4 or 5 that were definitely men dressed in womans clothing all of the sightings at malls around the MPLS area and mostly during weekdays. That happens to my preferred time to go out dressed in public also. I did approach and have a conversation with a crossdresser in Macys last year I noticed her while I was browsing in the ladies section in male mode her nervous movement caught my attention she was wearing a knee length tight black skirt with a very cute short sleeve white top and low heels I told her she looked great her nervous response was thank you and told me it was her first public outing but with her attention to detail on her outfit and accessories she had definitely been practicing at home.

I've quite a few stories, mostly related to my Uni. days but a few outside too.

To give context I had a lot of random dealings with Northumbria University in the United Kingdom, based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The one reason you may have heard of it is it entered urban legend back in 1992 on converting from Newcastle Polytechnic as it nearly called itself City University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (look at the initials). Only UCAS, the student clearing service in the United Kingdom, noticed the initials and managed to stop the name change being adopted. Unofficial link to the story - http://www.geocities.ws/cityuni1992/cityuni1992/ . As it was just pre-web, a proper narrative is hard to find (there are others) though it was briefly reported on local commercial television (Tyne Tees).

During the 1990s, it got the local nickname "The Transvestite University" as three of it's lecturing staff transitioned from male to female. One from design was televised in a floral dress and red, curley wig (think the 80s band T'Pau's "Carol Decker") discussing their decision to go trans as a "family man".

Another, I think Business Studies or Economics, had a course of about 30 students but for the first few lectures got 60 attending to, I guess, take a look at the lady who the previous term had been a man. That one remained towards retirement in the noughties and may had started having to wear wigs again due to male pattern baldness. The other two had moved on by then.

I ran into the third about 1991 as a young student myself around the Haymarket area, in a black and white dress, bobbed blonde hair do and dark hose.

Another random sighting was further into town (nothing to do with the Unis.) where you saw peoples' heads turn as they realised this tall lady in a miniskirt and dark hose was not what she seemed. Nice legs mind.

I also became aware a senior researcher was a closet dresser when a lecturer took the opportunity to out him at a gathering That one was cruel mind and the lecturer should have minded his own business.

Moving on, a senior academic at Imperial College, London just decided one day from that day forward he was going to live as a woman. Mid-term was probably not the time to do it and perhaps the beginning of the academic year might have been better?

Diversity-wise, my current real world workplace does have a few gay and lesbian couples, plus one bi lad (a slip of the tongue gave him away). Trans, I've not come across any. However, there is supposed to be a Trans toilet somewhere.

Oh, and a non-binary person gets on my bus to work. And I had a random encounter going for my bus the other day where someone clearly trans walked past me in women's blouse and pants workwear. Even in Newcastle where the addage "men are men" still applies despite a significant gay-friendly triangle on the south west corner of the city centre (it has it's own Times Square). To be honest, no-one really gives a $#!t bar a few daft kids or drunks.

To finish, there's a well known drag queen in Newcastle who runs karaoke at various pubs in Newcastle called Oephelia Balls. Prepare for alot of verbal abuse, which is part of her act. This is her / him and an interesting read.

https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/ive-fight-rights-story-geordie-14483759

She is supposed to have a competitor, however, I've never encountered her.

I see one daily rather Tuesday thru Saturday sometimes Sunday . Her name tag is Kimberly and has the absolute most beautiful long hair. It?s dark brown and as thick as I?ve ever seen. Wears uniform like other employees but no makeup . She never has makeup on bu I?d say maybe 25-28 years old. Always works second shift and I always stop in to get a soda or ice cream on my way to work. Very friendly as well. Haven?t discussed about her being transgender wouldn?t be polite in my opinion but just makes my day seeing her. No one says anything as well btw it?s a Thornton?s gas station everyone stops there. I want to see more and do from time to time. The more exposure the better for us all.

There's a young man who's at least a CDer, or possibly TG who walks his dog around the neighborhood. He sometimes wears a skirt, sometimes a sports bra type top. There's never any attempt to pass. My wife and I have chatted with him once, and I think we'll be chatting with him more. We have dogs too, which is why we bump into him from time to time.

Years ago there was a transwoman who operated a restaurant here. The restaurant was great, but she was very bad at running a business, and couldn't get the hang of it. It folded after a couple of years.

My wife had a coworker who was a transwoman some years back.

Those are the three that pop to mind now.

I had one for a cashier at Target last week when I was there as Natalie. I was a hot mess.

Hair in my face, sunglasses falling off the top of my head, fumbling with my purse. What a rookie.

She was fine, about 65% girl 35% guy. I would think that she was on hormones. She had small breasts and a 6 tall foot frame. Longish hair but a male face, no chin scrubble though.

It is not that I was checking her out but we did stand face to face for about 2 minutes.

Working in an e.r., it was a frequent occurrence. As I'm not, and wasn't, 'out', I got to be a 'fly on the wall' many, many times, overhearing how the other workers thought of the poor crossdressers and transsexuals. Sure, when they were treating the patient, they were all business, always professional, but once out of range of the patient's hearing, the truth came out, and it was never pretty. Little jokes, snickers, laughs at the patient's expense, and of course eventually someone would bring up the 'god will punish him' discussion. If the patient was unlucky enough to need to go to another department for testing, we'd hear about it from the people in the other department at some later hour or date, as they, too, would only see humor in what a crossdresser did.
On the bright side, no mention of physical violence was ever made.

I see them occasionally, but on the other hand, it's hard to spot those who really blend in. You usually spot only those who don't, like me for example. Anyone looking, can tell that I am a crossdresser. That is why I don't go out fully dressed very often during the day.

Saw a sister out in the wild this morning. I felt awkward, not because how they appeared, but because of how I might have appeared. I didn't want them to know I had clocked them, and I didn't want them to think I was judging them. I was trying to completely ignore them as if they were a normal woman, but without looking like I was rudely ignoring them because they were crossdressed/trans.

If they're on this site, and were out this morning in the South West of the UK, I hope that I didn't make you feel uncomfortable in any way - it wasn't you, it was me.

Back in 2013, I went to skiing with my son in the French Alps, and the person who choose the skis and adjusted them to our boots size was a crossdresser. She was in her 30s, she was attractive, she was dressed normally and her behaviour was not different from anybody else. Everybody was respectful but I noticed some distance in the people who preceded us.

I don't know if my son realized; I was happy to see that the public accepted her and the fact that this person could work normally without being harassed.

Just now in bagel shop. A customer in a tank top, womens athletic shorts. Small bust. At least six feet tall, arms and legs just a bit too muscular. I spoke to her to sort out what line she was in and she had obviously been working her voice. Pretty good but not quite there yet. Her own long curly blond hair. Face was hairless but too strong jawline.

I have seen about 4 i think, maybe 5. I work in the service industry and see many people every day. I may have come across more but didn't notice. The youngest i would say way 12 -13 as they whent to the mens restroom but was clearly wearing a bra under their t-shirt and yoga pants on. Pretty sure but not absolutely sure he was a boy at burth by the way he waked and their voice. Stood with parents while they pais for their fuel and snacks. Unfortunately my teen coworker made a rude comment on boy should only dress as boys, his father is very religious about things like that. I spoke up and said God loves us all, and who are we to judge some because they a a little different The rest where adults, and i treat them like i would want to be treated as i do with everyone. As I always say life would be boring if we were all the same.

True, but by the look of it, the great majority of us seems to be thriving (if at all) in captivity. It's exciting to see more of us roaming "in the wild", so to speak.

As of now, there are 6,200+ views of this thread.

I would say most of the responses indicate they have seen a handful of individuals over the past, with the past ranging up to multiple years. In short, not many.

Yet I read frequent posts here about the apocryphal inappropriately dressed CD who is seen everywhere ruining it for the rest of us, when in reality none of us seem to have seen any of them--or rarely--out in the wild.

Again, my message is the biggest obstacle in many cases is our own fears.

It happens from time to time. I always admire their courage for getting out to be themselves. As for the stereotype, I believe I see more cisgender women dressed outrageously than transgender men. I'm not sure I would notice a transgender man, since I am attracted to women, not men.

Today I live in a large French town and frankly in the last 10 years I have seen more and more CDs or Trans going on their business openly. I saw at least one young men per week mixing Female and Male attire (non binary or gender fluid probably) walking in the street or at the grocery store. Nobody cares. I am so happy for this new (metropolitan) generation to have the opportunity to create their own non-gendered style !
Just last month I crossed near our city hall in the middle of the day a high thin guy wearing a black fishnet dress, matched red panty and bra, low heels, light make-up and natural low bun. He didn't want to blend at all and of course a lot of people were staring at him/her. Two months ago a customer in the line before me at the supermarket was a CD (or a Trans) wearing a casual women outfit and no one blinked. Etc.
And you know what ? Yesterday I was watching TV and thought to myself that one of the political journalists looked like a trans woman. So I checked later on the Net and I was right, and she is a trans rights activist too !

I've only seen a few that I was sure of and I have seen few that had me guessing. This is excluding drag or gay bars where I have seen many some even had me guessing there because they looked so good. I think there are probably see more out there but they pass well and are not over done. Beautiful women trans or not always turn my head.

Yes, even in my small town. More often lately, which is wonderful.

Lots of us are out there. I see others fairly frequently now. More than I used to. And a lot of us, even when we don’t pass well to our own judgement, are managing to at least blend and be accepted. We’ve always been there. But times have changed sufficiently for more of us to dare being visible. Not perfectly accepting of us, by any measure. But more tolerant, in general. Even among those who virulently hate us, they fully understand there are many others who do not share in their hate.

Part of it, though, is I think that once you are CD or Trans yourself and going out into the general public, you become somewhat hyper-aware of your own tells, and you start looking for them more in others. Not so much consciously, as in seeking others out. But rather, you mentally analyze what you perceive as your own ‘glaring flaws’, comparing yourself to ‘normal people’… only to find that, yes, your shoulders are ‘too broad’, or you’re ‘too tall’, or whatever, but that the diversity of human life encompasses plenty of cisgender people who are even further from idealized averages.

Average people are also far less observant than you give them credit for. They see what they expect to see, and assume they understand things around themselves, based solely on quick first general impressions. Dress like an outrageous drag queen and walk through a supermarket, and sure, they will notice you. Dress and act appropriately to the setting, and they often can’t be bothered to give you more than a passing glance. They may do a double take if they directly interact with you, and look at you more carefully, or get hit by a voice or other trait that is far off the mark from what they thought they saw when they glanced at you. But even then, they tend now to just shrug it off and act as if they saw nothing unusual.

And yes, we’re more a part of the public consciousness now. The cisgender community knows we are here, has a better understanding of us. And regardless if they accept us or not, they know most of us are not going back into the closet. So even when we don’t pass, many people will politely act as if we do.

Ceera, thank you for your post. I agree with everything up to your last paragraph. I hope I'm wrong about this, but I don't think we crossdressers are part of the public consciousness yet. We are lumped in with trans people (and the public can't tell the difference when they see us en femme), and the controversy over providing hormones and surgery to minors has inflamed the haters' rhetoric. I just don't think the average person has the knowledge of the trans spectrum, which we crossdressers are on. (The first things our wives/SO's ask when we come out to them are whether we're gay or planning to fully transition!) The mainstream media rarely if ever reports on the great diversity of our broad "CD/trans" community. There are too many people who would make the illogical "connection" between someone who advocates puberty blockers for teenagers and those of us who simply enjoy wearing certain kinds of clothing. That connection may be true in some cases, but it shouldn't be cause for hatred of all the trans spectrum, and should be approached in rational discussion and debate of the issue.

I have on a few occasions. It has happened at second hand clothing stores and thrift stores. The first time was many years ago when a group of crossdressers came in to a used clothing store we were shopping at They were all wearing dresses and heels. One was talking to the others and I knew when they walked in they were CD. Other times in thrift stores I believe I seen CD's shopping because they were dressed elegantly and shopping for clothing. I will say they all passed really well. They stood out from the rest of the females shopping. The rest of the females were wearing plain slacks and jeans with a regular top and little or no makeup. Which is normal for women in thrift stores.

I have seen one in the wild and she was a train wreck. Looked like a meth head in a dress. All guy from the neck up, sloppily dressed from the neck down. May have just climbed out of a dumpster somewhere. I suppose I could have missed a few convincing CD'ers over the years.

I have seen a couple at drag shows and similar situations, but I don't count them.

This might count, it might not. I worked in Southeast Asia for about a year and a half. Saw lots of TGs, both at places you would expect like girly bars and whatnot, and the completely unexpected like small towns well far away from the capital city.

Some were completely passable, others not quite, but that was more because of their body type, not for a lack of effort.

Not to get too Freudian about it, but sometimes a guy in a dress is just a guy in a dress.

What differentiates CDers, imo, is the evidence of effort.

All the time. But I hang out around conventions, alternative music venues and such and it's gotten to be the norm.
