Yesterday I bought a new wig. I really like it and will have pictures once I am sure my kids and now grand kids haven?t made all photos go to the family cloud. Really don?t need that,
Anyway, I wanted some Covergirl mascara along with a few other things. I go to the self check, scan everything, tell the machine I will pay in cash and put my purse on the scanner to get the cash and the machine goes bonkers and tells the whole world I need help ( which is true) and an associate is on the way.
The associate is busy helping someone scan their whole cart. I am standing there in a a dress, great new wig, adequate make up while the machine won?t let me do anything until I get my help, which is on the way.

All I could think about was how can I write this up on Crossdressers? But it gets better.
As I continue to stand there and contemplate just leaving. The associate, a middle age woman, comes up and says how can I help you young lady. God I wanted to kiss her right there. I have ever been called young lady.
This wasn?t ironic or sarcastic, she was way to busy for that. I told her my problem, she fixed it, I paid and walked out of the store as a young lady!

Christie what a great story! I'll bet you walked out of the store feeling like you were floating on air having been called 'young lady'.

Nice confidence boost. Not everyone in the world is judgemental with a negative slant. I suspect if we go about our business like any woman would there would not be any issues for most people.

Anyone here ever worked retail? I have not but it occurs to me the last thing one would want to do is to embarrass a customer publicly or to 'create a scene'.

Years ago my ex-wife tried to convince me that self checkouts are discreet and easy to navigate. We went to one of the stations and began scanning a skirt and a pair of pantyhose that I had selected. The monitor started flashing and a sales associate appeared out of nowhere.

The SA was unable to fix the situation and had to escort us over to the customer service desk.

If I was shopping by myself I would have been mortified; however, my ex did all the talking during this event and naturally acted as if the items were for herself. Later in the car she started laughing but I was still shaking from the experience.

When I'm at the self check out I take all the time I. Need you can't get mad at me. I'm not an employee I can't be fired. I'm not trained To Do the job. It's gonna take me a long time. Sorry, complain to the company.

That's a great story. It's happened to me before in non Carla mode buying pantyhose or something.
I thought maybe your purse still had a code sticker on the bottom and rung itself up.

crobeson, yeah I worked retail at Walmart in Elk City, Ok for three years in Electronics. You're right working inthat environment you definitely don't want want to embarrass a customer or 'create a scene'. Depending on the custome reaction they can complain to management about you.

Oh, I have definitely been to department stores, totally dressed, looking at shoes when they kept referring to me as he, him, sir and that guy, not only did they not get any of my business, but they are out of business now.

I've never shopped en femme, but I've certainly bought a lot of things, and never bothered to go to the self-checkout lanes. Sometimes, if I'm getting a bra or some cute little panties, the cashier will think she's being funny by saying something like, "Do you think this will fit you?" I choose not to get embarrassed, and I'll respond with a smile and say something like, "Wouldn't you like to know?" or "Don't worry, this is definitely my size." And I leave them wondering, and sometimes blushing, and probably thinking, "Wait ... did that guy really mean that?"
The cashier is there to take your money and bag up your purchase ... their first thought is probably that I'm getting the items for a wife or girlfriend, and if she seriously thinks they're for me, it doesn't matter, because she doesn't really care about who is gonna wear those sexy things.

That was awesome, young lady! A comment like that would send me to the clouds, up there with all your photos!

I've done the same thing. Sometimes I'll answer, "No, this is for my wife. I think it would be way too small on me." I also say, "I'm sure it will fit her", while being ambiguous about "her" being my alter ego, not my wife. Sometimes I'll say, "It's for me, but not for me", with a little wink. Sometimes, I'll really turn the table on them and say something, "I hope she likes it because I'm really 'hoping' to 'get lucky' " or some other sexual innuendo. That really shuts them up, because, it they say anything else they may get "Too Much Information" of an embarrassing nature.

Cute story.

I generally avoid self checkouts, as I feel it's a way for companies to cut back on personnel. Also, self checkouts are prone to their own little fiascos, as you found out.

I am glad the situation worked out in your favor. Silver lining.

The first (sports) bra I purchased in person was at the self scanner register and of course it didn't want to work, I played it low key but was a ittle nervous

If that happened now I'd just be annoyed like I am when it's any other random item that won't scan.

Awesome! Congratulation "Young Lady"!! :) I think if they had self checkout 30 years ago I would have had a much larger wardrobe but I was always mortified when the cashier would want to discuss my purchases. Guess self checkout isn't always so discrete.

And Lori, I once had an SA make a "cute" (but somewhat snide) comment about whether a package of panties I was buying were for me. There was nobody else around so I think she thought she was getting away with something. I smiled and told her they were my regular brand because they were so comfortable and started talking about prints and lacey trim on this particular package. She just stuffed my things in a bag and handed it to me when I asked her what brand of panties she wore. (as I said, nobody was around ... otherwise I might have been totally mortified!!)

I wenth.through.a self-service checkout at a local Albertsons supermarket wearing my usual dress, nail polish, and.lipstick. The attendant said, "Ma'am, let me load up your cart.". I thanked her with.my deep bass voice. The she said, " Ma'am, have a nice day.". Now I have not worn trousers for.well over a month as I wear dresses instead.

I went thrifting yesterday and found an Exquisiteform black nightgown at Goodwill in my size (3X ), which is not an easy find.
The matronly cashier made an off the cuff comment, "I'll bet that will look good on you."
Not to be outdone, I told her that I had already tried it on and that I KNOW it looks good on me!

How great that so many stores have self checkout stations now? However my fiasco was some time ago - dressed male - bought a number of bras, tights etc?. The machine does not accept my payment. Three more SAs including the Manager later they finally get it to work!
Finally out of there - I was panicking inside the whole time. But by the time I got to my car I?m thinking - they probably couldn?t care less. This was all just before I came out to my wife - now I go dressed fem and buy what I want. Favorite is the used clothing store where I have also been called ma?am!
