View Full Version : First world problems - What opera to go to?

I just had a smile of my little "first world problems" moment today and I decided to share it with you to make you smile.
I decided I'll go to opera sometimes in Oct, Nov or Dec, so I started looking at it. I have two opera plays I want to see for a long time: Carmen, which is my top choice and Tosca comes second.
And here's the thing: I live in Prague, Czech Rep. and I totally love our State opera building, which went through big reconstruction few years ago and I haven't been there yet. Then there's our famous National theatre, which is beautiful, but imho quite overrated and I prefer the Opera building.
But Carmen is played in National theatre and Tosca is in State opera, so should I go to No. 1 opera in No. 2 building, or to No. 2 opera in No. 1 building?
Like I said: first world problems :)
I formulated it wrong: Which one go first to see? That is the question I was asking myself. I'm definitely going to see both, but my male-self hasn't seen opera for years and I was never, so we want to be it special.
And I've found these beautiful midnight blue long dress, that'll work perfectly with my awesome blue pumps and I also can have a bra with one strap, that'll hold my breasts. The link is in Czech, but I think you don't need translation for photos :)

Why not both? First World problems.

I am sure either choice will be the right one

I assume, that you will be dressed pretty for that occasion.

Plan to see both. They?re both great. Two different venues, two opportunities. Now, what to wear.

Beautiful dress. It needs no translation.
The site did give me a "cookies request" popup in Czech, so I guess I now have some Czech cookies. Maybe Pracny cookies.
I hope you're really tall (or wear very high heals) so the hem of the dress doesn't drag. I'm very impressed that you have the body to do the dress justice, particularly the long legs and nipped waist.
I think that you may need to practice getting into and out of the car while wearing that dress. Ask me how I know! Only something a girl would think of.
As for the bra, you may want to consider a little "fashion tape" to avoid a wardrobe malfunction. I've worn a strapless dress and I wore a strapless bra one size smaller than usual. Even still, after a night of dancing, the "girls" were starting to move "south". Sorry for my American vernacular. The boobs and dress were starting to fall down.

A lovely lady cannot be seen in the same dress at two events. You have any additional problem: buying a second beautiful dress.

I'm 187cm (or 6'2" in freedom units) and the shoes I mentioned are 9,5cm or 10cm (3,75-4") tall, so I think I got this covered.
And here are my photos I made today, where my figure is visible. I just need to lose like 3kg/6lb on stomach area to be satisfied.

And another dress: yeah, it's easy to make such claims when it's not your money to spend :D OKAY! I confess! I was already thinking about it. Happy now? (I'm literally laughing right now)
Yesterday I got my new breasts, which are like breast "tunnel" you put on your chest and from my 1,5 day experience I think they'll do the trick with the one-strap bra. But I'm going to write full review here after two weeks with them.
We've got good public transportation, so I'll take a bus, which is like 6 min. ride and then tram for another 25 min. It's the most convenient way.
P.S. Enjoy your Pracny cookies, Stefi :)

If your busses are like mine, you may still have to practice going up the stairs to the bus, or at least I would. But I guess I could get the bus to "stoop" to shorten that first step.

Of the two, Tosca is my favorite, but Carmen is a close second.

Sounds to me like the new venue would add that special touch to the evening. So go see Tosca first and be sure to find that great seat to finish it off.

I've always wished that I got on with opera - after all, who wouldn't want to be just a little bit more "high brow"?
But I've never enjoyed it. Which is a shame since it seems like a great opportunity to get dressed up.

Well I would go to the State Opera building first, see Tosca, and wait for the next production of Carmen at the State opera.
Here in the UK, the Royal Opera House in London has a varied programme sometimes with two different operas, and two different ballet performances over a period of 7 to 10 days. It's the ballet performances that most I interest me, but either is a good excuse to dress up.

Wow. THAT DRESS! Not sure I'd be able to concentrate on the opera if I were dolled up and wearing that. I agree, two wonderful events calls for two beautiful dresses.

I love to go to the opera in New York City. The metropolitan opera is the best opera company in the world with a season from September to May. During that time you can go to New York for 4 days and see a different opera every night. They perform seven days a week during the season. No other opera company has a schedule like that. You can get in for $45 if you don’t mind sitting up near the ceiling.
I haven’t been en femme yet, but I have a special dress I’m saving for the occasion.

I have to disappoint you, Cynthia. National Theatre performs almost every day in season too. The State Opera building is under their organisation and they have also one more theatre. Or two.
And at the end Tosca it is. Because when I compared program with my scheduled weeks off and weekends, Tosca has three scheduled terms that work for me, but Carmen has zero until January, if I don't want to end at work earlier, rush home, doll up and rush back into the city. And I'm not gonna do that, I will enjoy it.
So I'm going to find term with lounge seats. And they costs roughly USD 45-80.

Sounds like a lovely evening out! I have attended theater but never dressed as elegantly. Now I am jealous!

I guess I’ll have to come to Prague one of these days and check it out.
You’ll love Tosca. I’ve seen it many times, and I always cry during act 3.

Cynthia, you're more than welcomed here :)
And small update: Tosca on 22/10 in State Opera building.
Now time to buy dress :) Oh! I need a purse!

Hi Marketa.
I hope you still intend to see Carmen, sometime? I saw it in May at the ROH in London. It was incredible.
I was totally in male mode. It was a black tie occasion, but I really enjoyed it.

Hmm. What is the appropriate dress for a woman at black tie occasion? An evening gown?
I asked Mr. Google
Choose a high-quality dress made from high-end luxurious fabric.
Keep the gown below knee length; the longer, the better.
You can choose from a gown, a cocktail dress, or a floor-length formal dress.

Steffi.
My wife wore a teal coloured cocktail dress. I was not remotely jealous. Believe that and you'll believe anything!

Leah, yes, I'm going to go to see Carmen, but the first date that works for me (read: during weekend or my weeks off) is in January. I might choose earlier show, but I'd have to rush home from work, take a shower, doll up and then rush into the city, which is not appealing but rather stressful.
And I'll buy a long evening gown with a long slit, because in all modesty I've got long and quite nice legs :)
