I have a light cotton skirt with a pattern I love. It's pretty lightweight, which is why I wanted to wear it in this heat. I went out on our deck to model it for my wife, and she said it looked great with the top I picked, but that it was thin enough I needed a slip. With the slip on, I realized there was a real possibility that it would slip down to my ankles. So off it came, and I put on my other favorite lightweight cotton skirt, which I then wore out to the movies with my wife and our GG friend.

However, I hated to give up on that skirt, so I decided to get it altered. I've never had a piece of Joanie's clothing altered before. The tailor that my wife has used for years is a lady in her 70s who has one assistant seamstress of a similar age. They work out of small storefront. I dressed up with a simple top and my favorite denim skirt, knowing I would have to try on the skirt that needed taking in. When I got there, she greeted me without batting an eye. I gave my name as Joanie and told her what I needed, and she said to put on the skirt to be fixed in the little dressing room around the corner. I did so, and she pinned up the skirt, mentioning that she thought it would for sure fall down. I chatted with the ladies a bit during this, then went back and put my other skirt on and gave her the skirt to be fixed. She gave me a claim check and said it would be ready in about a week.

What made me so happy was that the interaction was exactly the same as if I were a GG, or in male clothing, which is as it should be. I can't wait to get my skirt back and wear it out somewhere!

Joan, I am glad the interaction with the tailor went well. I have had clothes altered at the dry cleaner. I was not dressed, but put on padding and the dress in the changing room when I got there. She did a great job. But because of a language barrier there was no chit chat.

Joan, That sounds so exciting to get it altered. Sometimes it is the littlest thing that can make our day.

I got this really pretty strappy dress with a mermaid shirt. It turned out to be way too tight, but I loved it so much that I wanted it to be let out. I knew that there wasn't enough material to let out, so I came up with a plan. I thought that the tailor could make bodice panels from the mermaid skirting to make bodice panels to let out the waist.

I pick out a tailor and took the dress in with my request to let it out by using the skirt to make bodice panels. I thought that would be it. But, nooo! The tailor needed to make measurements to see how far to let it out. My wife would need to come into the shop to try it on so she (the tailor) could make measurements. Well, that wasn't going to work. So I proposed that she just let it out a couple of inches on each side. She insisted that my wife come in to try it on.

So, I took a deep breath and said, "It's for me." She said, "OK, go into the changing room and put it on. So, I did. As I was in the changing room putting it on, I heard some man come in to pick up jis tailoring. I hid in the dressing room until he left. Then, I came out, and she measured it up, just like I was any other girl.

But then the most amazing thing happened. She said, "I have some other dresses that you might like. Do you want to try them on?" Apparently, someone had left some dresses behind, and she acquired them. I tried on about half a dozen dresses and decided to buy three of them. She offered me a discount if I would buy the other three, but they didn't fit or didn't look good on me.

It was a win-win situation. I got some dresses for cheap and she got rid of some dresses for cash.

Every year since the pandemic restrictions lifted while on Helen's holiday I've used an alterations/repairs service, usually for broken zips but also last year one of my fave pull on elasticated waist skirt needed new elastic. I'd already sewn together the elastic to be the right tension, I just needed it sewn into to skirt but it needed a stretch stitch something I don't have on my cheap sewing machine.

As ever treated like any other customer, competitive prices and quick service so what's not to like.

That's not always been the case. I remember the first skirt I needed a new zip put in. The guy in that shop and with great emphasis kept calling me buddy. So after that I voted with my business and took it elsewhere finding the two nice ladies I've taken my money to ever since.
