Last night's tiny adventure

I picked up pizzas with long pants and a shirt hiding my dress, then took them off in the car before walking to my friend's house- a table was laid in the communal space by her house, but the neighbours were inside. I left her house about 10pm, and the dinner party was underway- I'd no option but to walk within a few feet of them to get past- no hiding my dress- so I just greeted them in French, exchanged grins with a couple of them, and continued to my car. No uproarious laughter, which was a relief, and no cameraphones in evidence.

It did feel good, but it was dark and the people only had a few seconds to register me...

On the 1-10 scale of bravery, I'd put it at 3.

Every time you venture out can be a little better the the previous. Fewer nerves, less concern. They won?t all be 10s but solid 5s will eventually become routine.

I've hung out dressed to one degree or another with this friend many times, including a few times with make-up and wig. She's totally non judgemental and I know she likes that I feel I can trust her. She bothers a lot with make-up, I don't know how she can bear it in summer heat. There's always a slight risk that someone else might drop in, but I don't dwell on it- if they did, depending who it was, I might hide- there are some mutual friends who I know would gossip and I'm not ready for that.

Having been the object of a fair amount of speculation and gossip over the years, little if any of the gossip will make its way back to me and what did was quickly disregarded by family, friends and colleagues..
