Hello everyone. First let me say that if this post breaks any rules I apologize and ask the moderators to remove it with my apologies.
Now, I have decided to start a small side business in photography. I have been an enthusiast for nearly a decade, and I believe that my skills are equal to becoming a part time professional. Thing is, I don't want of expect this to becone a full time profession. So I am targeting just a few niche markets. Historical reenactors, Drag Queens, and Crossdressers. All groups that I feel are under-served. Finding reenactors is easy. Queens are easy. But,,,, I am not sure about the best way to go about letting CD'S know about my services. Especially closeted crossdressers. Craigslist seems like a non-starter to me. I am concerned about someone responding who is looking for services that are not legitimate. Locally, we have hate groups active, so openly advertising may incur violent attention.
Has anyone ever learned how to reach out to others with our clothing preferences?

Kimmy,

My suggestion would be to look for support groups. Contact their secretary, explain what you're trying to do and possibly offer to come along to take a few shots for free with a view that there could be follow up business. It's a safe way in and they'll know of any other avenues that may be open to you.

Ask about special occasions such as Christmas parties and see if you could win any business there.

Are you thinking of going as far as to offer a dressing service at some point. CD' s come along, get a makeover and you do the pics?

How about reaching out to those who do makeover services? There's a good chance someone getting a makeover.Wants photos of the great work.

Attend T and CD events and start shooting away.:battingeyelashes:

That's how the T photogs I know here in SoCal all started. Altho, none make a living doing it that I'm aware of.

Helen. Thanks. I am connected to some people involved with the local LGBTQ organization. I plan on reaching out to them. They actually have a Prom (most) years, and I am considering offering to take complimentary photos at one as a marketing strategy. I am not currently in a position to offer full transformation services.
I intend to go to where the client wants me since I do not own or rent a studio. I can rent studio space on an hourly basis. But it will nearly double the cost of my services. Thank you, for the advice.

Genifer, Great idea! Thank you.

Docrobbysherry : I am not looking to make a living from this. If I can add some to my income great! Otherwise, making enough to validate getting new or replacement equipment is just fine. My wife likes to call passions "ways to get newer, bigger, better toys".

Well, you made a start by telling us here. I'm sure many can spread the word.
Firstly though we'd need to know where you are. At least the general area and how to contact you to set up a shoot.
Would it be done at your home? Do you have a studio? If you are going to charge then the rates will help too.

I take my own photos but I'd be interested in a good shoot.

I have intentionally not stated my location. I did not want to be accused of advertising on here, as I am not sure about the rules on that.

But... as far as the rest. I will travel up to 50 miles from my home to meet a person where they are comfortable at. If they are comfortable out and about then great. If they are fully closeted I can bring the gear needed to do in home photos. If they really want to come to me then I can rent a studio.. but it will increase the cost almost double. The rental is almost as much as my rate. To keep from breaking forum rules, I am in Northern Indiana, and any further info can be asked by personal messing me. That seem reasonable?
