I was in my office this morning and a co-worker came in all hot and bothered he just found out that there is a TS comming to school this summer and is staying in the dorms. He was so upset keep saying F.... queer over and over again. Then he said he could smell one of them a mile away and I was only three feet away he puts TG, CD TS and gays together say they are all queer. The whole time I was happy, but was sad because I was having to hide my joy. I keep saying I felt bad for the person that was being move out of the dorm to make room for this person.
I feel so bad that I could not have standed up for this person and my self.

While I probably wouldn't reveal myself to "Mr Enlightenment", I would have asked why he was so upset. Was he afraid the TS would hit on him? Or afraid the TS wouldn't hit on him?
I'm old enough, and (hopefully) wise enough to try to educate the poor creature, but Iwouldn't be hopeful that it would stick. But then, I've never cared for discrimination anyway, in any form.

Yes to what Jodie-Lynn said.

I definitely would have had words with that joker. Not angry words which would hopefully make him feel a little more humiliation. I've done it when hearing a coworker start to talk about gays.
Next time, ask him how he would feel if he were discriminated against just because he was left (or right) handed, or just because he was ___________(pick a characteristic).
He'd probably respond, "I was born this way," and then you respond, "so was she" (he).

I work in security and one of my colleagues at a location that I work from time to time has come out as a pre-op TS and the things that are said behind her back are just horrible. I feel like I'm dieing inside as I really feel for her. I can only imagine what they would do to me if they knew, which they don't.

Anna...
I work at a college in the State University of NY system and we have a pretty good diversity policy. It doesn't specifically protect Trans people but I asked our college president and she said she would assume we were protected. I asked her to see if she could have gender ID and expression added and she was amenable to checking it out. Haven't heard from her about it, but I haven't been fired yet.
ANYWAY, you might want to get a "Safe Zone" sign from the safe schools project and put it on your office door like I did. It has initiated a few conversations and gotten a few people to think about how they treat people who are different than they are. I've even had other faculty request the signs from me! While I never volunteer info on my status, I would tell if asked directly - I've just never been asked. People do know that I won't tolerate ignorance, bigotry, and harassment in my space and they respect that.

Thanks for that Shari, but I'm not lucky enough to have my own office. I used to work full time at this particular location and the guys are there are worse than little children in the playground. I now work at 6 locations within an hours drive from home as and when I'm needed as I couldn't stay there. When they are tearing my TS colleague apart, I find that I have to keep my mouth shut and its not easy. Because if I said anything, not only would make things worse for her, but I would out myself as a CD as well and I don't want those idiots knowing.

The legal environment in the workplace is moving toward diversity, but you will always have narrow minded people such as this individual. He belongs in another century. You should only feel pity for such a person.
I would have suggested they need diversity training! Had this happen at work and I just said, "Remember, up to ten percent of the population is gay so you are probably working with one and don't even know it!" It would disturb them but it also made them think. Don't feel bad about caving, next time you will be a little stronger!

Sounds like the poor little boy feels threatened or is hiding a little secret himself. I have no tolerence for people who discriminate against others, and would have said something to him. Of course it's easy for all of us to speculate on what we would have done in that situation.
Just my 2 cents

He's going ultra-macho to cover up for his own personal inadequacies. Nuff said.

I agree that this guy is a total neanderthal for what he said, but isn't that quote above just too funny. It just goes to show how absurd and ignorant prejudice really can be. I wouldn't feel bad for not saying anything because I think, as Ron White says, "you can't fix stupid." I wouldn't have said anything either.

Reminds me of a boy in my school in the 70’s who took great delight in calling anyone who did not conform to his standards of manliness a 'poof' or ‘queer’ and generally made his victims lives hell, I know I was one.
Guess who left the UK to move to LA with his boyfriend. Unfortunately the poor guy died of Aids.
Looking back one can only guess that he did it to direct attention away from himself.

Anna...
I share your pain at your colleagues' behavior. I used to have that problem until I took a stand against it. Yes, I'm lucky to have a private office and be able to designate it a safe zone. Still, I feel that one can stand for human rights without outing herself. Here in the states, we have laws against sexual harrassment that can make a perp's life miserable even if they are not convicted. Even though gender is not specifically covered in many of these laws, "Perceived sexual orientation" is usually covered and gets a lot of rednecks fired from their livelihoods.
Anyway, what I wanted to say is that it is possible to take a stand for human rights for all people without everybody knowing about your situation. Just let everybody know that as a member of law enforcement, you are hired to protect and serve all law abiding people regardless of whether they fit the norms of society, where they were born, the color of their skin, or who they worship as their creator. If you do this and stand firm, you will eventually find that people won't slander others in your presence because they will know you won't stand for bigotry in any form. Bigotry is what you are dealing with and it is definitely not professional behavior even for people with too much testosterone. LOL!

Thanks everyone for your kind work and advice. I am going to seek out this person when she get here and befriend her, I think that action are greater than words. Who know she might be in one of my classes.
Love all of you.

I would have just said one or two words to him. (1) what if one of his children son daughter came in and said dad i am gay or TS CD TV (2) would you be such a bigoted brat if it was one of his family. That is the question.

I am going to do that small thing as well when I see my colleague next. It'll be good, because she won't be alone. I'll tell her about here as well.
