Has anyone else noticed that any time crossdressing comes up in the media they tend to make a joke about it? Is this because this is the only way that they can cope with something different or that they really think that it is funny or ... any other reason I would love to hear what you think about this and any ideas you might have.

It don't matter to me.
It's a natural thing in society to smirk or snigger or look down on anything out of the norm. Even more so to help prove their own perfection and alignment to the mold.
It gives me a reassurance of my own beliefs to see these boring, unfortunate, pontificating idiots frown on me and my kind. These pencil-headed looking jerks make me laugh at their big shot at sounding intelligent and is like a satire of the Simpsons.
That's my tuppence worth.

Couldnt have said it better myself. the media ALWAYS displayes cding as abnormal, bizzare, or as a big joke. they are either unconfortable with thier own sexuality, or are just so closminded that they cant understand anything that isnt traditional normality.

The news media is bad enough but I usually just consider the source. They love to sensationalize everything anyway. Kinda like Inside Edition. I listen to those stories(I said listen, not watch, I'm usually shaving my legs around that time) which are usually kind of lame anyway about something inane or some celebrity who crossed the street backwards (like I give a rat's pitudie). The one's I can't stand are when they bring in the so called "experts" to explain why someone is gay or crossdresses. Gimme a break--there is no one reason and it's a personal thing but people believe what they hear for the most part because it it wasn't "true" it wouldn't be on TV, right?. Nobody, including us, knows why we really do what we do.(Including GG's). So, why worry about it? I dont. People are going to think how they want and do what they want regardless. I don't waste time and energy worrying about it. I just enjoy being myself and try to have some fun. Take care, Ericka

OK, but you say "crossdresser" to most people and they think of Nathan Lane in The Birdcage. How many of us thought that we were "supposed" to be like that and we just weren't? So how can we expect the general public to just magically understand who we are? They have no need to learn about us. Not until it becomes personal, i.e. they find out that their SO, family member, or friend is a crossdresser.
And for most the business of news is not news. I don't care how much they say otherwise. The business of news is ratings/circulation. Who is going to grab more eyeballs, a regular person or the slight eccentric? You and I are never going to get on the news unless we put out flaming third world children with our bare hands.

I couldn't agree more, I can't remember when the media hasn't featured crossdressing in any light without first making a dig at it. Even when the overall article is positive, it is tainted in the opening dialogue or lines.
It is so frustrating.

Hello Girls, You all are all right, the media is NOT a friend to CD's or any other alt. life style! If you polled the general public as a whole I would guess that 80+percent would think they are living the perfect life. They dress and act and do just like all there friends and all this to project a greater than thou life. So when we chose to live different we become the "bad people" in the media and almost every where else. My feelings are that we are the only brave ones out there!!! We live the life we want and not the stero typed life the rest are stuck with! It scares the crap out of the so called normal people and they react with resentment. Ok I'll climb down off my box now, haha. I've got to get my legs shaved and toes repainted for work tomorrow. Take care!!! Luv Kaitlin

Media doesn't always portray "something different" as comical. Granted, the media doesn't have the capability to capture transgenderism in any kind of accuracy, however it does have the ability to present "different" topics in a light of optimism. I believe that media portrays "Crossdressing" as humorous after the years of bad drag, badly dressed drag queens, and inaccurate impersonators (anything can be funny if the person doing it doesn't identify as what is being portrayed). It stems from the history of the act.
