Hi its Nisha ,
Just been watching in U.K a new reality tv series that started tonight ,called Girls will be boys .The idea is that they are trying to form a band but they dont tell the boys they have selected till the end of the audition that they want them to sing and dress as girls .They have selected 4 boys who have all been in music groups before and in the auditions unknown to the boys they were looking for boys who had the looks and voices to be able to be transformed into a girl band .When the selected boys were told they all agreed to go along with it !! so it promises to be interesting to see how they progress learning to be girls as the weeks go by .On monday there was also a programme where a group of 5 working class men trained as female dancers for a one night show in a female impersonaters club in blackpool U.K . I think its good for average people to see these type of programmes ,it may help to gradually help towards more acceptence and tolerance of cross dressing ,

I like the idea very much and I agree with you that things like this are very positive for the transgendered community.

Or it is just another show in a long line of shows that uses cross-dressing as a comedic device. That's not the road to acceptance. That's being the clown or playing the fool.

Will look forward to seeing it when it crosses the waters to North America. Many of your shows eventually make it here on BBC America, but it takes a while.

I saw both those shows too Nisha and was going to start a thread on this subject tonight, but you beat me to it.
I thought the lads on Monday's show were extreemly brave, you can't get much more masculine than builders can you? Yet they all took up the challenge, and performed brilliantly in front of an audience that includd many of their own families!
I don't know how many parts there are to "Boys will be Girls", but tonight's was a bit slow. I suppose they have to show the whole selection process (including the rejects), but I wish we'd seen more of the reactions when the winners were told that they were to become girls, and were going to sing to an audience who didn't know their secret. I'm looking forward to the shows where they are transformed into the sexy girls they will have to be to pull it off. I might learn a few tricks there. I wish I was 40 years younger, and could sing!!! I'd volunteer for this one!

Christina,
In the USA we had a program called "Three's Company" a couple decades ago, starring John Ritter, as a young man who gets an apartment with two very cute girls, and lies to the landlord that he's gay, so he won't get kicked out. The result was that there were a whole bunch of gay jokes, some stupid, some not.
But, over time, the notion that gay guys are just, well, guys, came across, in spite of the silly premise. 20 years later, we have gay characters in many serious TV programs. "Brokeback Mountain", etc.
The description of these two programs doesn't automatically lead me to the conclusion that these "girls" are being laughed at or held up to ridicule. The proof is in the watching, of course, but these programs could go a long way to foster the notion that "it takes a real man to dare to wear a dress" :).
Hugs,
Susie

I'm not sure where the program aired today, but the whole series has already been shown on E4. It was a bit of a let down to be honest, as none of them took it very seriously from start to finish. The song turned out pretty good though. For those interested, the song can be purchased at the official site here: http://www.7digital.com/stores/default.aspx?shop=318
A clip from their music video can also be viewed here: http://media3.7digital.com/assets/318/356479.asx
