Michelle:
You'll need to hire a lawyer to get your name changed legally. Your next step will be to get your driver's license updated with your new name. You'll need a letter from a Doctor stating that you are transitioning to get the sex revised on the DL. Once you've gotten your driver's license updated, you can then get your Social Security Card updated with your new name. The DL & SSN should be sufficient identification to get the rest of your bank accounts, credit cards, etc. changed as well.
Hope this helps,
Heather

Actually, this varies from state to state.
In New Jersey, you can download a pro se packet off the internet, and it costs about $200 to execute the change. I believe that you get a hearing date, explain to the judge why you want your name changed (as long as you're not doing it to conceal a criminal history, they don't care), and it's pretty much a done deal. You also would have to print your upcoming name change in the local newspaper for a certain amount of time leading up to the hearing.
Again, it varies from state to state, but if your state judiciary has a website, they should have instructions there.

For those in the UK:
I got my name changed online for £40 through the UK Deed Poll Service.
Basically, all you do is fill out the online form with all your info, pay the money, and they send it to you. All you then need to do is sign it, and it becomes a legal document. You can also order 'certified copies' so you don't have to send the origional to every tom dick & harry that needs to know. Couldn't be any easier.
I'm gonna change my name again soon I think, people have so much difficulty with the name Minaki...

Once done u can go & argue the toss with the bank this was much harder. Once i finally had the manager it was quite easy, i could prove who i am i can prove who i was hey presto they just changed the name on the account, so all pays & payments didnt have 2 b changed.

I have started the process to change my legal name, in Colorado all I did was download the paper work to change my legal name then go and get fingerprinted at the local police station, send the fingerprint cards (one to CBI here in Colorado and one to the FBI) to get a criminal history reports after I get them back all I have left to do is file my paper work with the county court, go to a name change hearing, have my name change decree printed in the newspaper once a week for a month and I am done with the process.
the fees for this was 16.50 to CBI, 18.00 to the FBI, 49.00 for the filing fee to the court and the cost of pubilshing my name change in the newspaper.
Hope this helps

I never thought I'd say it.
In South Africa a legal name change takes printing a form off the Internet, completing it, taking it to a government department and paying R85.00 ($11) and time.
So as painful as it is waiting it does get done quite simply and cheaply.
Gender changes are another ballgame. Short of dropping ones trousers and proving you have physically undergone surgery there is no way to get F on anything. Our laws do not require surgery, but the government officials (read bureaucrats) behind the counters are not up to date on the changes that occured in 2003 and as a result do not accept the form and adopt a "so sue us" approach. So someday it will be tested in court and they'll get their slap in the face, but most TS folk here have got better uses for their money. Like surgery costs!

I can't think of a single time that you HAVE to hire a lawyer. Even for my divorce I didn't hire a lawyer. Even if you are arrested or indicted for a crime you have a right to a lawyer but you are not obligated to have one. I may have missed some circumstances..
You must have the proper paperwork filled out correctly. The specific paperwork and specifics about proceedings differ from state to states as others have said. The info should be easy to find by emailing or checking out your state's website.

I was under the impression that you had to change your name via Deed Poll here in Oz. Both so that 1. the gov't can get some money outta you.. and 2. to prevent people from having several aliases and keeping under the radar as far as law enforcement is concerned.
When you do it your way.. how do you get the change on your driver's licence and birth certificate?

How do you get them to change the "M" to an "F" on all of those documents. The actual name change is really no big deal here in MN. You fill out the forms (2), you pay $250, and you bring two friends to the court w/ you to tell the judge that you aren't insane. So what? How do you get them to change the "M"?? That's what I still need to get an answer to. Anyone???

Can't say for America Chrissy, sorry. In the U.K. a letter from a psychiatrist is usually enough for everything except the birth certificate. Even the NHS have finally changed me to F. now, though bizzarely I'm now Mrs. M. to them. I'm not sure why, I never married.

Name changes vary from state to state but in all states with the exception of California you have to get your name changed in the state that you were born in. In California it involves a $350 fileling fee plus you have to have your doctor write a letter that you are transitioning. There are also about a half a dozen forms that you have to fill out. Plus you have to run an ad in the newspaper for 28 days stating that you are intending to change you legal name. A friend of mine just completed her name change, she did not even have to go into the court room. The court clerk took her and two other peoples paper work and came out a few minutes later with all of the necessary stamps and signitures from the judge. That was all there was to it.

I heard about that through my friend as she'd changed her name by using that service and had it all witnessed by her manager at her work.

All states are probably different. In California you take a form from the DMV and have your Dr (or Endocrinologist) sign it. I've heard of a few people that have had it signed after being on hormones for a year due to the nonreversal of certain physiological attributes. It kind of depends on the physician on if they'll sign or not.
