My cat is currently sedated, with an IV and a catheter.
Last night he broke away from the usual playful stuff and wandered into the laundry room. He parked himself in the litter tray and sat there yowling in pain for 45 minutes.
He had a blocked urinary tract. I took him into the vets first thing this morning, after spending a completely sleepless night with him.
I won't know the long term prospects until the lab tests come back.
Call me a 'softy', but I'm really upset about this. He's my buddy, he's very affectionate and has no-one else to take care of him. I got him from the pound about three years back.
Vet's estimate of the cost of care is almost into four digits. Which means no lingerie shopping for me this holiday season.
I spoke with the vet earlier today, he managed to clear the blockage, and the blood test have so far shown no permanent kidney damage.
If all works out well, it will simply mean a special diet for the little guy from now on, possibly some long term medication. I won't know that until Monday tho.

I know how you feel Marianne. He's simply another member of the family. We spent over that on knee surgery for one of the dogs. How can you say no? The alternative is just unthinkable.

Marianne,
So sorry to hear about your cat. Like the rest of us, he too has adjustments to make as he grows older. And like the rest of us, he'll eventually accept his new limitations.
I certainly hope for the best for both of you.

one of my cats had the same thing happen. He was a minx. The vet said he had developed stones in his urinary track & couldnt pee & if not uncloged his bladder would pop. The reason for this is because wet cat food is made with "ash" which causes stones in male cat wizz tubes. I had t feed him special cat food (I think Iams) from the pet store that had no ash content. Check the ingredients on your cat food, it'll say how much ash is in it

After spending his weekend sedated, with an IV in one leg and various tubes stuck into sensitive areas, he's back home.
Got him on anti-biotics and special dietary food (low magnesium/phosphates and low ph), so far so good.
I have to keep an eye on him for a while tho, the next day or two at least, then again once the course of anti-biotics is done, and so on.
Vet said the blockage was magnesium phosphate crystals, so the dietary food should help with that.
Anyways, here's a picture of him about to take a nap on top of the television. He was *very* happy to get home and didn't stop purring until he finally fell asleep.

The bandage is from the IV, and it's going to be great fun removing it in a day or three...

If they used Vet Wrap (http://gprix.com/WVET.HTM) like they should have, then the bandage won't be a problem. It only sticks to itself, not skin or fur.
It's good that he's home.
Did the vet mention anything about drinking water? If not, you might want to try bottled/filtered water for a while.

I am so glad for you both. He's a special friend and very lucky to have you care so much for him. Like Donna said maybe filtered water would be good from now on just to be safe. :) Happy to see you two together again. *purrs* & *hugs*

Hi Marianne!
Sorry I missed this thread until now.
I'm very happy for you and your cat! I'm glad he seems to be doing well now. Our animal family members are indeed family, whether cat, dog, guinea pig, snake, bird, arachnid, fish, lizard, et al. It's difficult to see human family ill. It's probably more difficult to see animal family ill, as they cannot comprehend what's happening to them.
I hope all will continue to improve for your cat!
*HUGGLES*

marianne my cat got this problem Seems it is quite common in older cats especially doctored cats I am told althogh females also suffer from it. A special diet usually solves it Good look girl I know how you feel
