View Full Version : Shopping Retail - Better than Resale....

Well I think everyone knows I love to shop..... So took the daughter's car in to the dealer this morning to have a part replaced (warantee else I would have done it myself), and hit kmart on the way back to work. I just love Jaclyn Smith (the woman and her clothes :) ) and found some great deals......
A brocade suit, tan and pink flowered, jacket and skirt for $3.00 and $2.00, respectively (normally $30 and $20), blouse for $4.00 and a scarf for $4.00. Total with a diet soda of $17.00. Tried on the jacket there in the isle and held up the skirt....none of the other women there even glanced my way. The checkout clerk was youngish and I could tell, surprisingly, she wasn't very happy with me buying all these female clothes. Very chatty with the woman infront of me, very quiet with me. But hey, that's her problem and not mine.....still, she was polite and took my money!!! So no big deal...
So I still say that shopping retail, on clearence, can keep you in style and under budget as compared to resale or thrift shops. I did see some other things I want.....race you there!!! hehehe

I think Kmart is the best retail store for good deals...thats where I bought hubbys first skirt, we'd been looking on ebay at one just like it and it was like $15...I got it at kmart for less than $5
Every woman appreciates a good deal oh and a good clearance sell :)

Just like GG's, if you know when and where to shop, you can find those bargains waiting for the taking. I have often done well shopping at retail stores.

Do retail stores actually sell merchandise that isn't on "CLEARANCE" or "SALE" ????

A good sale in a nice store is nice, but Goodwill and other "Vintage" stores in SF still rock my boat. The selection is so all over the map, and you can find things that just are not sold anymore. (Yeah, yeah, I hear your "And for good reason" cut it out, I'm a hippie, I like that stuff!) And there is a special deal in knowing that GGs have worn it, makes it more real in a strange way.

You west coast girls have all the neat shops! In the burgh its either new and in style or its Black and Gold (which is in style after the superbowl).
And that is a good point you bring out as long as you get a certificate saying it was worn by a GG and not another CD!! :)

Those are great buys, and I really like the pic of the suit! I cruised through a liquidation store yesterday and found an absolutely delicious Linda Lundstrom skirt, initially $85, on for $39. When it gets to $20, that baby is mine! It looks and feels like grey suede. Nice change from my standard black and shiny. Oh, the guy got coveralls.

Superb outfit! Those shoes!
I agree with Tekla the cool thing about Goodwills is the range of stuff, clothes from a zillion stores.
I also buy earrings from eBay - probably just because all that scrolling and clicking is its own addiction.

Love, Nordstroms Rack and Lord & Taylor, have some good buys. There's always Ebay as Day Tripper mentioned, I found a ton of great deals there, Sue Wong gowns and dresses for less than twenty bucks.

Nice outfit, and a super price. I find that Kmart around here runs hot and cold. Sometimes great stuff other times nothing good. But that never stops me from checking them out.:heehee: There is a chain store around here called "Dots" that I like very much. And even though you have to ask the clerk to unlock the dressing room they let you try things on. Most skirts and tops run around $13.00ea.

Alina, there happens to be a "Dots" store not too far away from me. I've been meaning to check it out but wasn't too sure about it. Thanks for the info.

Your Very Welcome Phyliss. I have found that a chain called Rainbow is also inexpensive and friendly, if you have any of those around where you live.

There is a chain store around here called "Dots" that I like very much. And even though you have to ask the clerk to unlock the dressing room they let you try things on.
There is a Dots here, and they have a fairly big selection. It is really "hit and miss", with a lot of things that just aren't interesting to me, but because the selection is so large, if you keep looking you will likely find something fairly nice and inexpensive. But it might take some time -- there are literally thousands of garments there.
The local Dots store has no locks on the change-rooms -- you have to pass near the cash and vaguely wave, but they have been quite comfortable in my shopping there in drab, and none of the customers there appear to even blink either.
The local Dots store isn't quite the kind of place where I would ask for advice as to what looks good on me, but they are cheerful enough in trying to help me find something specific.
I talked to the Dots manager once about their selection, and was told that they get in stock from cancelled orders, and from "overage" (where the manufacturer make more copies of a garment than was ordered, knowing that some will be imperfect.) I was told that it was not liquidation stock (not left-overs that did not sell). I have, though, seen too many designer clothes there with the labels cut off to completely trust that explanation; I suspect there is some liquidation merchandise as well.
