View Full Version : What is Your Dress Size?

After reading yet another article in today's paper about "Plus Chic" fashions, it occured to me how lucky we are to live in an age when large women aren't limited to the "Fat Girls Shoppe". Inquiring minds want to know: what is YOUR dress size?

In the interest of full disclosure, because I have the hips and shoulders of a guy, I fall in between: a size 14 skirt fits me perfectly, but for dresses or tops I'm an 18/XL/1X. How about you?

Last bought was a 22, but it's now a touch big. Maybe 18/20 now, and falling.

Thats a really good point! I've never actually thought about that before. I'm an 8 or a 10 (depending on what shop) but in some cases it can actually be harder to get the right size, what with there being lots of plus sizes on the rack. I still l think its marvelous though, that bigger women can shop where they want and purchase what they like, especially in bigger chain stores where they have surplus amounts of every size.

Oops, I forget that there are a lot of UK and other international members of the forum! To answer the poll, please read question #2 to read size 16 in the USA, size 18 in the UK, size 46 in Europe and size 15 in Japan. Courtesy of this nifty size conversion site:

It depends on the dress and on the manufacturer. Usually, I wear a size 8 (US), but sometimes I fit into a 6. Other times, it's a 7. I fit into size 6 or 8 jeans depending on the cut. My blouses are usually medium or 8 all the time.My skirt size is either 6, 7, or 8 depending on the cut. The 6 fits my hips perfectly, the 8 usually fits my waist a little tight. If I could just lose those damn seven pounds!!!!! ;)

From a 14 to a perfect 12 and that's starting to get a little loose now. I'm loosing weight like crazy. my biggest problem is my back at the shoulder blades and ribs between the breasts and the waist. Still way too manly.

Down to a size 12 for most items. Still hanging on to the 14's and 16's though, because the holidays will probably put a few pounds back on. :)

Last year I was about a size 18 :( So I started going out for walks and drinking lots of water.... and no I haven't cut out any of the foods I like to eat :) I'm now a size 12/14 and feel great. It's even nicer when your partner notices and tells you how good you are looking.

Its rare for me to find a dress that fits since my top and bottom are very different sizes. I'm usually a medium top or a size 10 or 12 (US) and a small to extra small bottoms or size 4 to 6. I do have a very trim waist with some hips but they are still a lot smaller than my upper rib cage size. I tend to wear a lot of pants or skirts with tops.

I am a size 12 to 14 (UK) for my skirts and trousers, jeans etc. My tops are 14 to 16 I take a size 38B bra, but this is getting a little slack now, so it will be a 36b next time. I am very lucky as my shoe size is just the right women’s size 6UK. Most women in the UK are now a size 6 to 8 for shoes.

My only problem is my tummy; it started when my 6 pack turned into a barrel.

But I am working on it and I have lost 2 ins over the last few weeks.

24W in sleeveless jumpers and 22 in skirts. Very difficult for blouses. Problem is loosing weight will work a little but my past weight lifting didn't help in this respect. Large arms and chest and wide shoulders. Since I am 6'4" and with an obvious history of lifting, I will never be able to pass in public. sigh...

I wear a dress size 9/10 us, (10s are a bit big) a size 8 us, jeans/trousers. it really matters how the cut was made and the style. I'm such an odd ball fit its a real pain to bring home a new outfit and find I don't like it on.
Reminds me of the other day at the mall, this woman proceded to clear the racks and went off the try them all on, it looked like a lot of fun really to be able to do that. I was jealous. So I said to her " that looks like it fun or therapy which is it?" she laughed and said she recieved her end or year sales bonus.

Anywhere from an 18 to a 22 depending on the cut. The stomach is a little big. I'm broad shouldered also but that never has really been a problem.

I hover between a 6/8 [U.S. sizing], depending on how much chocolate milk I've consumed on any particular day.

Still can't get below size 18 on top, despite losing some 30 kilo's.
Bottom down to 14. I suppose theres a few kilos left to lose - but what can you do with a big frame? Losing weight can be a bit of a buzz, especially getting rid of all the old "fat clothes". There is one downside. If you go along to weight-watchers there always seem to be a bunch of georgous GG's with heavenly buxom figures (swoon) that feel bad about themselves because they don't fit their imagined image. We could teach them a thing or two about accepting yourself! They simply have no idea how how beautiful they are. sigh.

Elinor is a size 22 and she should try and get her waist size down.
This time of year is not a good time to try.
So come the new year walking, cycling and cut down on the booze.
Is on the cards.

The smallest I've ever been, when I'm slim is a 14. I'm normally a 16, and rarely an 18 depending on the cut. My upper bodies bone structure cannot cater for anything less.

Pants drive me nuts because I fit a 14 but the leg length is always such I need to get an 18 and wear a belt!!!! I wish there were more talls in pants, because when I stumble upon those on the rare occasion 14's are perfect!

Depends on where and the fit.

12-14 in Canada, 14-16 in the UK. More important are the measurements.

Like...

Shoulders: 17" across
Bust: 40" (20" from armpit to armpit)
Waist: 31" give or take an inch.
Hips: 34"
Sleeve: 24"
Neck to hem for a top: 25"
Inseam for pants: 30-31"

I usually have a tape measure with me and can quickly size up a garment without trying it on. About 1 in 10 gets taken back.

Size 14 (UK) skirts but they are starting to get a bit loose so may have to drop a size, Size 16 (UK) tops/dresses.

The skirt size I wear varies depending on the manufacturer. I can go from 10 to 14 U.S. In jeans I wear a 14, as well as in a dress. But I have problems with 14's due to the fact of my are length and shoulder width. On top I wear an x-large in most things. I find that this size tends to hide a little of my natural shape if worn properly. I have to start working on getting rid of some of my belly and then I will be able to go a little smaller on bottom but that will naturally cause a bigger problem in finding dresses that fit properly.
What ever is a girl to do.

I am not sure what my dress size is. I am a size 38 jeans, so what would that be in a womens measurement?
