View Full Version : What reasons do GGs wear wigs for?

Recently when I was out dressed, someone asked me whether I was wearing a wig (my wig was positioned a bit back, exposing the front part of my wig cap, and she saw it).

I'm not sure whether she read me as a GG wearing a wig, or a crossdresser wearing a wig, which made me think...

If I were a 24-year-old GG, and I was wearing a wig, what plausible reasons might I have for doing so?

Different hair color maybe with out dying it, or wants long hair and only has a short cut or a medical reason?

Quite a few, actually...

Chemotherapy...
Thinning unmanageable hair.
Hair that has been over processed chemically. (yes it *can* literally melt and fall out)
Simply because we'd like a different look, temporarily.
Ease of care and convenience: take it off at night, plop it on the wig head~slap it back on the the morning~ voila~ the perfect coiff with no muss or fuss.

Actually I wore a wig quite often in my 20's for reasons 4 and 5.

Wigs weren't invented specifically for CD's yanno. :D

I believe that there are a variety of reasons for GGs to wear wigs:

- for pure vanity;
- for a costume look;
- for a disguise;
- to cover thinning hair, caused by cancer treatments, thyroid problems, etc;
- to cover complete baldness; and or
- for a younger, more fashionable look.

Wigs are very popular by many different people. Do not worry about wearing one, I am sure it makes you look great!

Dear Jennifer,

I think it's easy for CDs to imagine that wigs are made just for them.

I fact, the wig industry would colapse overnight if GGs stopped wearing wigs.
Many GGs have several wigs. You don't have to have "a bad hair day" when you can just haul out a wig and GO. This forms the bulk of the wig buying public. Add to that the people who want to look glamorous on occaision and then the people who HAVE to wear a wig if they want any hair at all.

Personally, I do not want to have to wear a wig. But, even though I am growing my hair out like mad, due to MPB I may have to. So this puts me into the third catagory. Perhaps I can get away with a fall? Time will tell, I guess.

As yiou can see, there are MANY reasons why a GG would buy a wig.

It might surprise you to know that we do it all the time. I do anyhow. Ive got short fine hair and if I want to change my image a wig is the only way I can do it. I love red heads but would never dare have my hair dyed red so a wig is the easy option. Ive done it tons, specially as I own about twenty of them for my makeover business. Its great fun. My mum has borrowed a couple because she lost all her hair when she had chemotherapy and my friend regularly borrows them because all of her hair fell out, she now only has patchy hair growth and huge bald patches. So you see we needed them long before CDs ever thought about it.
Take care

I have a 22 year old GG friend who wears wigs simply because she doesn't like bothering with her real hair.

The same reason I would wear them if I were born a woman--style. As Ericka, I really have no other choice because Rich is bald although Ilyia on "Star Trek--The Motion Picture" was really kinda sexy bald. Maybe I'll try it yet, knowing me. :happy: Ericka Kay

The only time I have ever worn a wig was when I had my makeover with Jamie Austin (my pic is one of those times)

Do GGs who wear wigs get spotted wearing them? If so what do they do?

Don't some Jewish women wear them on religious grounds?

Dear Jennifer,

I think you are obsessing over a non-issue.

What do you do if "spotted" wearing a wig? Nothing. People, both men and women wear wigs all the time. It's not something to be ashamed about. It's not something to worry about at all. Read Bev's post. Bev's friends "spot" her every time she shows up with different hair. This is not something to get upset about.

Relax, girl.

Wigs can be a lot of fun. Imagine being able to change you hairstyle in an instant. Cover up the frizzies. Go blond for a day. I'm sure you know all this already.

Hi All,
Most of you should know of my love of the actress Mae West. After her first movie, Night After Night, she always was wearing wigs in public. Reason, dyeing her hair messed it up badly.

I'd assume the same reason we wear them....doesn't like her hair or likes to try different looks! Don't know how many 24 year olds wear them but why shouldn't they?

A lot more GGs that you would ever realize also have problems with baldness. Its usually more of a thinning problem so they go for wigs to cover it or even those little extension things.

Thats not to mention girls with medical problems and all those type of bad issues that can cause hair loss due to chemo and all that.

When I went out with my friend, she was having too much fun looking at all the wigs that she decided to wear one too.
