I think it is a matter of patience.
I usually get the best result if I shave while having a bath. Pores open, skin softens and time enough for the shaving cream (usually soap though) to take effect.
I get trouble too, if I have to have a quick shave without time for the soap or shaving cream to take effect on the beard.

Here in the last year or so my beard has gotten more course and stiff too; a touch of grey  I continue to use the single blade disposable razor on the face. Most depilatories say do not use on face because the face like other parts is fairly thin skin and it causes a chemical burn (did that once on the manhood - never again).

There are a few creams out there for the ladies 'mustache' or facial depilatory. You can Google them with keywords like ladies facial depilatory. CAVET: Most of these are gradual and permanent! So, if you ever want a beard again you might reconsider the razor.

As for all other parts, depilatory works fine for us ladies, just read the cautions on the bottle.

Norelco electric shaver for me, but I don't have a stiff beard, lucky me I guess, it allows Tina to be so damn pretty:D

I shave in the shower...have a mirror on the shower wall and I save my face for last. After I have scrubbed everything and shaved my legs and upper body..so the facial hairs have gotten a chance to soften up...I use one of the gels and a different razor than I use for my legs...a zibrating quad for the face and a womens tripple razor for the legs and body.. Its a system and works well for me!

I try to stick to a strict shaving regiman and I sometimes shave twice a day. Usually right before showering.I have super-duper sensitve skin and a very thick beard. So shaving is a total chore and takes up at least 20 minutes to half an hour zig-zagging around on my face with a plastic disposable razor and shaving cream. But,girls,we all know that we either do it or go out en femme looking like the Werewolf! But I sometimes get annoyed with it all and I use a depilatory on my face and other places, legs chest, arms. It's very convenient. But a depilatory can cause a slight pink burn which is made much worse if it's left on too long.So it's not foolproof. You should't use a depilatory if you've got a serious skin disease of any kind. If you are talking about a beard that hasn't been shaved in a while, it's gonna be tough the first time. Your skin is gonna be tender. But, I'd just make sure my face is well moistened and use some shave cream like Barbasol.
I use a Gillette Mach 3 razor on my face, not just when CDing, but every day. If you haven't used a "straight" razor in a while, expect a few nicks.

Try the Gillette Fusion. It's got 5 blades and vibrates to lift the hair, works good on a week long beard too I might add(I know that's an eternity for some of us). I got it to use on my legs and it was fantastic so I figured why not on the face, after all that was its original intention. Any shaving cream that contains moisturizer or aloe for sensitive skin is good too. Also try shaving in the shower or afterwards that helps too.

If it helps any, I also have a tough beard, that is if I let it grow out. But I will agree with Marie, shaving after a shower, and using a shaving cream with Aloe does help.
