View Full Version : Boy I am
Who is going to look at this movie: Boy I am (www.boyiam.com)
Here is a trailer that works (http://blip.tv/file/25851). I first saw the trailer on the official site, but that one isn't working anymore.
Morgan
For in the short.
The film goes about 3 transgender FtM. In the movie you see with what problems they stuggle when they want to become a man. And you see also how the diffrent communities react on transgenderded people.

Thanks for the tip, Morgan. I'll be on the lookout for that.

You're right Kieron, I usually wait for information to come to me, I guess, via the media. I did a little digging and it's showing here today in a bar in Brooklyn (nowhere near me) - talk about low budget. I can't find out if it'll be in a theater, or if I already missed it. It sounds like a good presentation - including more about how the lesbian community as a whole questions the reasons for transitioning (see below). If I can't catch it in the movie theater, maybe I can see it when it's on DVD.
While it may seem to many in the dyke community that female-to-male transitioning is exploding in this country, honest dialogue about it has not. In the challenging new documentary Boy I Am, queers voice honest fears and misconceptions about transitioning and the dyke community, and dykes and transmen from various walks of life express their hopes and reservations.
Boy I Am follows the transitions of Nicco, Norie and Keegan, three young New Yorkers from different race and class backgrounds, as they navigate decisions regarding hormones and surgical options as well as the potential minefields posed by the reactions of friends, lovers, coworkers and the world at large.
In the meantime, lesbian activists ask questions that many may be thinking but are not saying out loud. Is transitioning anti-feminist? Is it a trend? What if those who carry through with the choice later regret it? What does it mean if transmen want to remain a part of the lesbian community? What does it mean if they don’t? Is a transman a straight man, or does he maintain his queerness? Boy I Am also addresses the economic issue: is it only those who can afford surgery who get to be “real”? An academic discusses current theories about female-to-male transsexuals, including the argument that transitioning is comparable to anorexia as a desire to control one’s body in reaction to patriarchy.

Wow I'd love to see this, I've just tried watching the clip but it won't let me!! The DVD costs about £60 but it says for schools colleges and universities so don't know if the public can buy it. There is just not enough stuff like this in England we will probably wiat for some time before Sky TV get their hands on it for the general public. It is so frustrating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hadn't heard of this movie but I'll definately check it out. Thanks for the heads up.
I think the official trailer was better, the one you people didn't see (yet). There the first thing one of them says: It's realy hard for me to be a girl, it's realy hard. And I don't know if I could do it.
Yah, the official trailer is much better. It's sad you can't see that one.

For one DVD, that is ridiculous. I don't know a lot of people who'd buy that.
