That depends on the formulation that you use. Some people say it's useful, some people say it's useless. I think it depends on your body's sensitivity to it, some people have a hard time feminizing with prescription HRT because of natural resistance so who knows.

Check this article:

http://www.mercola.com/2001/aug/29/phytoestrogen.htm

Granted, it addressing menopausal symptoms in genetic females, it also states that in case studies where some took this "plant estrogen" and some took a placebo, there was absolute no difference in the results.

It also mentions there is no documention as to the safety of taking this product!

I have to admit, it's frustrating to me that TS's will go to these extremes, ignoring advice to NEVER self medicate with hormones. Just because something is touted at "natural", one should never assume it's safe.

If you've had surgery lately, you'll most likely remember if they asked you prior to the procedure if you've been taking any natural substances or herbs. There's a reason for this!

Trudi had to have surgery on her spine several years ago. (injury to C4) and was asked this question, to which she answered: Yes, I took ~for the life of me I can't remember right now, but it was something like black cohosh~that a friend gave me for a headache the other day.

This was the day before the surgery. It seems had they not known that, she could have gone in to irreversable coma as the result of a reaction between this herb and anesthesia. The procedure was put off for 4 weeks to make sure her body cleared this substance.

Keep in mind, that if the manufacturer claims it is "not a medicine" the product has not been tested and/or cleared by the FDA. Many non scrupulous "snake oil dealers" fly under the radar by making this disclaimer.

While I understand the "needs" of a TS to transition, I seriously wonder about those who seem to think it's worth risking death for?

P.S. I'll ask Trudi what the herb was tomorrow, and edit in an addendum to this post for clarification purposes.

If you don't know what it will do to you, then you have no business taking it.

The only thing it did for me was improve my mental outlook. Of course that may simply be a placebo effect also. Ericka

This is crazy

You've been taking it and you don't know what it will do to you, do you always take pills without knowing what they might do to you? :Angry3:

The least you should have done is gone to talk to your DR about taking it.

Probably nothing...unless you have hot flashes. Lol. Its plant extract simular to female hormone estrogen. I've take it before and its in in everything. Mainly soy.. but it is no substitute for the real perscription hormone..

Dear SOBER,

In adition to being worthless, plant estrogens will be MUCH more expensive than real homones.

Something to consider if you have to pay for them yourself.

Lovies,

If you wish to have a serious change to your mind or body talk to your physican. Most of the herbal remedies are pure junk, their only effect is draining your checkbook. The best general rule is; if a substance has any effect it will require a prescription.
